Lightning Baccarat explained

Lightning Baccarat is Evolution’s live baccarat with random multipliers: each round, between one and five Lightning Cards are struck with 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x multipliers, and a 20% Lightning Fee is added to your bet to pay for them. A £10 bet costs £12. Here is how the cards, fee and pay table work, checked 20 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Every bet carries a 20% Lightning Fee, so £10 on Banker costs £12 in total.
  • One to five Lightning Cards are drawn each round from a virtual 52-card deck, with 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x multipliers.
  • Multipliers boost winning hands that contain a Lightning Card; the rest of the return is reshaped to pay for them.
  • The pay table and RTP on the help screen, not standard baccarat figures, are what to judge it on.

What Lightning Baccarat is

Lightning Baccarat takes a standard live baccarat table and adds a random multiplier feature. The cards are dealt from a real shoe by a live dealer under the usual baccarat rules. Before the deal, the game strikes between one and five Lightning Cards, chosen at random from a virtual 52-card deck, and gives each one a multiplier of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x. If a winning hand includes a card that matches a Lightning Card, the win is multiplied.

To fund those multipliers, every bet carries a 20% Lightning Fee on top of the stake. That fee is the single most important thing to understand about the game. It changes the cost of every round, and it is why the standard house edge figures for baccarat don’t carry over. For the classic game, see online baccarat UK; for every format we cover, visit the games hub.

How Lightning Cards and multipliers work

Evolution’s description of the feature is short, and the details on its game help screen fill in the rest. The core mechanics are:

  1. Betting closes and the game reveals the round’s Lightning Cards, between one and five of them.
  2. Each Lightning Card is a specific card, such as the 7 of clubs, drawn from a virtual 52-card deck that is separate from the physical shoe.
  3. Each one carries a random multiplier: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x.
  4. The dealer then deals Player and Banker from the real shoe under standard rules.
  5. If the winning hand contains a card matching a Lightning Card, the win on that bet is boosted by its multiplier, as set out in the game’s pay table.
  6. If no Lightning Card appears in the winning hand, the bet is paid at the table’s base payout.

The help screen explains how several Lightning Cards in the same hand combine, what base payouts apply without a multiplier, and whether any limit applies to total winnings. These details are what determine value, so read them on your table before betting.

The Lightning Fee: what each bet really costs

The 20% fee is charged on every main bet, whether the hand wins, loses or ties. It is easy to overlook because your chip shows the stake, not the total.

Lightning Fee by stake
Stake on the betLightning Fee (20%)Total cost of the roundFee as share of total
£1£0.20£1.2016.7%
£5£1.00£6.0016.7%
£10£2.00£12.0016.7%
£25£5.00£30.0016.7%

Over 50 rounds at £10, you would pay £100 in fees alone, and those fees are only returned to players as a group through multiplied wins. That doesn’t make the game unfair: the published RTP takes the fee and the multipliers into account together. It does mean your bankroll needs to cover £12 a round, not £10, and that the right comparison with an ordinary table is the RTP on the help screen, not the standard 1.06% Banker edge. Our house edge and expected value pages explain how to compare games on that basis.

Playing a round of Lightning Baccarat, step by step

  1. Choose a Lightning Baccarat table at a UK-licensed casino and check the minimum and maximum bets.
  2. Open the help screen: note the base payouts, how multipliers combine, side bet rules and the RTP for each bet.
  3. Place your bet on Player, Banker or Tie; the 20% fee is added and shown in your total bet.
  4. Watch the Lightning Cards and their multipliers appear once betting closes.
  5. The dealer deals two cards each, then third cards if the standard rules require them.
  6. Wins are settled automatically, with any multiplier applied, and your balance and net position update.

What to check in the Lightning Baccarat pay table

Because the multipliers have to be paid for, multiplier games usually adjust the base payouts as well as charging a fee. The exact figures belong to the game provider and can differ between versions, so this checklist helps you find them quickly.

Why Lightning Baccarat feels swingier than standard baccarat

Standard baccarat is a low-volatility game: most results are even-money wins or losses, with a small commission. Lightning Baccarat moves part of the return into rare, multiplied wins. Most rounds pay at the base rate or lose, and the fee is taken every time, so ordinary sessions tend to drift down a little faster, while the occasional multiplied hand produces a much larger payout.

That pattern is similar to how volatility works in slots: the average return can be similar while the shape of results is very different. For budgeting, plan around the typical session, not the occasional big multiplier. Our standard deviation entry explains how swings are measured, and the bankroll basics guide shows how to size stakes for a more volatile game.

UK rules that apply to Lightning Baccarat

Lightning Baccarat is a live casino game, supplied to Great Britain by Evolution and offered by UK-licensed casinos. Since 17 January 2025, the Commission’s game design rules for non-slot casino games ban autoplay, set a 5-second minimum game cycle and require the game to show your net position and time played. The 5-second floor rarely affects a live round, but the session display and the need to place each bet yourself do. The Commission’s speed of play decision (opens in a new tab) sets out those changes.

There is no stake cap specific to table games; the £5 and £2 limits apply to online slots. Since 31 October 2025 you are prompted to set a financial limit before your first deposit, and you can lower it at any time with immediate effect. Our game design rules and deposit limit rules pages explain both.

Lightning Baccarat myths

“The fee is just a tax that makes the game a bad deal”

Not exactly. The fee pays for the multipliers, and the overall RTP reflects both. Whether the trade suits you depends on whether you prefer occasional large wins to steady even-money results.

“Watch for the 8x cards and bet when they’re due”

Lightning Cards are drawn at random each round. There is no cycle, and past multipliers have no bearing on the next round. The gambler’s fallacy explains this trap.

“Raising stakes after a loss will catch the next multiplier”

Increasing stakes to chase a multiplier is chasing losses. Progressions don’t change the edge and can drain a budget quickly; see our betting systems guide.

Where to play Lightning Baccarat in the UK

Many UK casinos that carry Evolution’s live games list Lightning Baccarat, but we don’t confirm which of our partners has it on a given day; search the live lobby, and check the operator on the Gambling Commission’s public register (opens in a new tab) first. For an overview of two partner lobbies, see our Casumo live casino and PlayOJO live casino guides. Free, confidential help is available from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions

How does Lightning Baccarat work?

It is live baccarat with random multipliers. After bets close, one to five Lightning Cards are drawn from a virtual 52-card deck and each gets a 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 8x multiplier. The dealer then deals Player and Banker under normal baccarat rules. If a winning hand contains a matching card, that win is multiplied according to the pay table. Every bet carries a 20% Lightning Fee that funds the feature. Our baccarat rules page covers the underlying game, and online baccarat UK compares it with other tables.

What is the Lightning Fee in Lightning Baccarat?

It is a 20% charge added to the total of your bets each round, so a £10 bet costs £12 and a £5 bet costs £6. You pay it whether you win, lose or tie, and it is what funds the multipliers on Lightning Cards. Because of the fee, the usual baccarat house edge figures don’t apply directly; the RTP shown on the game’s help screen is the figure to compare. Budget for the total cost of each round, not just the stake. Our expected value entry explains how to weigh a cost like this against occasional larger wins.

What multipliers can you get in Lightning Baccarat?

Evolution lists Lightning Card multipliers of 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and 8x, with between one and five cards struck each round. A multiplier only matters if the matching card is part of the winning hand on your bet. The help screen explains how multiple Lightning Cards in one hand combine and whether any maximum payout applies, so check it before you play. Multiplied wins are rare compared with ordinary results, which makes the game more volatile than standard baccarat. See our volatility explained guide for what that means for sessions.

Is Lightning Baccarat better than normal baccarat?

Neither is better; they suit different preferences. Standard baccarat has low volatility and a well-known house edge of about 1.06% on Banker with eight decks. Lightning Baccarat adds a 20% fee and pays some wins at multiplied rates, so results are lumpier: more ordinary rounds drift down, and occasional hands pay much more. Compare the RTP figures on each table’s help screen rather than assuming one is cheaper. If you prefer steady results and a lower cost per round, a standard or Speed Baccarat table may suit you better.

Do Lightning Baccarat side bets pay the fee?

Usually the fee applies to the main bets rather than side bets such as Pairs, but the rules can differ by version, so check the help screen on your table. Side bets carry their own house edges, which in standard baccarat are much higher than Banker or Player; Pairs at 11:1 cost around 10% of each pound staked over time. Adding side bets raises the total cost of each round. Our page on side bets and the blackjack side bets guide explain why these optional wagers tend to be expensive.

Can I play Lightning Baccarat for free?

Live dealer games, including Lightning Baccarat, generally don’t have a demo mode, because they run on a real table in real time. Some casinos let you watch a table without betting. Where free-play versions of casino games exist, UK rules since May 2019 require the casino to verify your age before you can use them. If you want to understand the game first, read the help screen and watch a few rounds. Our pages on free-to-play casino games and free demo rules explain the age verification requirement.

Who makes Lightning Baccarat?

Lightning Baccarat is a live casino game from Evolution, the studio also behind Lightning Roulette, Crazy Time and Monopoly Live. Evolution supplies Great Britain through a Gambling Commission licence held by Evolution Malta Holding Limited. Its live baccarat range also includes Speed Baccarat, Golden Wealth Baccarat and XXXtreme Lightning Baccarat. Which tables appear depends on each casino’s lobby. Our Evolution provider page covers the company, and Lightning Roulette explains how the multiplier idea works on the wheel.

How much should I budget for Lightning Baccarat?

Budget for the full cost per round including the 20% fee, and plan for bigger swings than standard baccarat. If your session budget is £60 and you bet £5 a round, each round costs £6, so you have ten rounds before the budget is used, assuming no wins. Set the budget before you start, use a deposit limit, and stop when it runs out rather than chasing a multiplier. Our guides on setting a gambling budget and how to set deposit limits walk through the steps.

Are Lightning Cards random?

Yes. Lightning Cards and their multipliers are drawn at random for each round from a virtual 52-card deck, separate from the physical shoe the dealer uses. Previous Lightning Cards have no effect on the next round, so there is no pattern to follow or card that becomes due. The random elements in live games supplied to UK casinos are tested under the Gambling Commission’s technical standards. Our explainers on how casino games are tested and RNG describe how that randomness is checked.
