Lightning Dice is a live Evolution game where three dice tumble through a glass tower and you bet on the total, from 3 to 18. Each round lightning strikes some totals with multipliers. This page gives the exact chance of every total, how the multipliers reshape the paytable and how UK rules apply, checked 20 October 2026.
There are 216 ways three dice can land; 10 and 11 are the most likely totals at 27 ways each (12.5%).
Totals of 3 and 18 come up once in 216 rolls, so they live on rare multiplier hits.
Lightning games trim the payout on totals that aren’t struck so the multipliers can be funded; the edge is still built in.
Our partner free spins can’t be used on Lightning Dice. 18+, terms apply.

What is Lightning Dice?
Lightning Dice is a live dice game from Evolution, the studio behind Lightning Roulette. Three dice are released at the top of a tall glass tower, bounce down through a set of pins and settle in a tray at the bottom. Your bet is on the total the three dice show, anything from 3 to 18. Before each roll, lightning strikes a handful of totals and attaches a multiplier to them for that round only.
That is the whole game: no point numbers, no come-out roll, no side rules. It is one of the simplest casino dice games available live, which makes it easy to learn but also easy to play too quickly. The house still has an edge on every total.
How to play Lightning Dice
Find Lightning Dice in a UK-licensed casino’s live lobby and check the minimum and maximum bet per total.
During the betting window, place chips on one or more totals between 3 and 18.
When betting closes, the lightning phase picks several totals at random and shows a multiplier on each.
The host drops the dice through the tower. When they settle, the total is read and shown on screen.
If your total was struck by lightning, your win is multiplied; if it wasn’t, you are paid the standard amount for that total.
Review your balance and session position before you rebet for the next round.
There is no autoplay. UK rules in force since 17 January 2025 require you to start every game cycle yourself, so even a rebet button needs a press each round.
Lightning Dice odds: the chance of every total
Three six-sided dice can land in 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 equally likely ways. Count how many of those ways add up to each total and you have the true odds. These numbers are fixed maths, the same in every version of the game.

The final column is what a total would have to pay for the bet to break even in the long run. The real paytable pays less than that on totals without lightning, and that gap is where the casino’s margin comes from. Compare the numbers in your game’s paytable with this column and you can see the edge for yourself.
How the Lightning Dice multipliers work
Lightning is the feature that defines the game. In each round a random set of totals is struck, and each struck total carries a multiplier that replaces its normal payout if the dice land on it. The rarer the total, the higher the multipliers it tends to receive, so 3 and 18 are where the biggest headline figures appear.
To pay for those boosts, the standard payouts on totals that aren’t struck are set lower than a plain dice game would offer. This is the same design Evolution uses across its Lightning range. The practical effect is that most of the time your winning total pays a modest amount, and a smaller number of rounds deliver a much larger one. The overall house edge is fixed by the combined maths, and the exact RTP is printed in the game’s help screen.
Multiplier ranges and the paytable can vary by version and casino. We don’t quote a maximum here; check the paytable inside the game before you play.
Staking approaches on Lightning Dice, in pounds
Players usually choose between spreading chips across the middle totals or taking a single long shot. Neither changes the edge, but they produce very different sessions.

What a session feels like
Middle spread
25p each on 9, 10, 11, 12

Wide spread

Long losing runs, rare big results
Notice the wide spread. Landing a winner 90.7% of the time sounds attractive, but nine of your ten chips lose on every roll, and the winning one usually pays back less than the £1 you put down. Covering more totals just means paying the margin on more bets. This is the dice version of a pattern explained in our betting systems guide.
What a Lightning Dice session costs
Expected loss equals total staked multiplied by the house edge. Using an illustrative 4% edge (check your game’s real figure), here is how stake size and session length add up.

Real sessions spread widely around these figures because of the multipliers: the long-shot approach in particular can produce a result far below average for most players and far above it for a few. A gambling budget set before you begin is the most reliable control you have.
Lightning Dice myths that don’t hold up
The tower can be read. The pins exist to randomise the fall; nobody can predict a total from how the dice enter.
A total is due. If 18 hasn’t appeared for 500 rolls, its chance on the next roll is still 1 in 216.
Bet the totals with lightning. Multipliers are drawn after betting closes, so you can’t follow them.
Higher stakes improve the odds. Stake size changes your exposure, not your chances; see do bigger bets win more?

Lightning Dice vs sic bo and craps
All three use dice, but they ask different questions. Sic bo also uses three dice and offers bets on totals, plus bets on doubles, triples and combinations. Online craps uses two dice and builds a round around a point number.

Frequently asked questions
How does Lightning Dice work?
Three dice are dropped through a glass tower and you bet on their total, from 3 to 18. Before each roll, lightning strikes several totals at random and attaches a multiplier to each; if the dice land on a struck total, your win is multiplied. Totals that aren’t struck pay a standard, slightly reduced amount. The game is made by Evolution and streamed live from a studio. Each round is independent of the last, and the house edge applies to every bet. See our casino dice games overview for related titles.
What is the most common total in Lightning Dice?
The most common totals are 10 and 11, each made in 27 of the 216 possible ways three dice can land, a 12.5% chance per roll. Next are 9 and 12 at 25 ways (11.57%). The rarest are 3 and 18, each made only one way, a 0.46% chance. Because common totals pay less, landing one more often doesn’t make it a better bet. Our understanding casino odds guide explains how payouts are set against probability.
What is the RTP of Lightning Dice?
The RTP is published in the game’s help or paytable screen at your casino, and that is the figure to rely on, because casinos can run different configurations. Like all Lightning games, the return is spread unevenly: standard payouts on totals without lightning are reduced and the multipliers make up the rest. Whatever the figure, it is below 100%, so losses are expected over time. Our RTP explained guide shows how to read it.
Is there a Lightning Dice strategy that works?
No. Each roll is independent and every total carries a built-in edge, so no combination of totals or pattern of staking can produce a long-term profit. Spreading chips across many totals wins more often but returns less each time; backing 3 or 18 wins rarely but pays more. Both cost the same proportion of your stakes on average. The useful choices are your stake size and when you stop. Read our house edge explained guide for the maths.
Can I bet on more than one total in Lightning Dice?
Yes, you can place chips on as many totals as you like within the table limits. For example, 25p each on 9, 10, 11 and 12 covers 104 of the 216 outcomes, a 48.1% chance of a hit. Only one total can win, though, so the other chips lose every round, and each separate bet carries its own edge. Spreading changes how a session feels, not what it costs on average. Our casino bankroll basics guide covers stake sizing.
Is Lightning Dice fair?
At UK-licensed casinos, yes, in the sense that it runs to its published rules and odds. The dice are physical, the tower is designed to randomise the fall, and both the casino and Evolution need Gambling Commission licences. Fair does not mean favourable: the paytable gives the casino an edge on every total. If a result is recorded wrongly, raise it with the casino first and then the ADR service it names. Our guide on how casino games are tested explains the checks.
Can I play Lightning Dice on my phone?
Yes, at casinos that carry it, Lightning Dice streams in mobile browsers and casino apps. The betting grid is simple, with one space for each total, so it adapts well to a small screen. Use Wi-Fi or a strong signal: if the stream drops after betting closes, the round still settles and your balance updates when you reconnect. Our mobile casino guide explains the trade-offs between apps and browser play.
How is Lightning Dice different from sic bo?
Both use three dice, but Lightning Dice offers only total bets and adds random multipliers each round, while classic sic bo offers a wider menu: Big and Small, odd and even, specific doubles and triples, two-dice combinations and single numbers, with no multipliers. Sic bo’s Big and Small bets carry a known 2.78% edge on a standard table. If you want more choices and a clear low-edge bet, see our sic bo guide.
Do bonuses count on Lightning Dice?
It depends on the terms. Many UK casino bonuses exclude live games or count them at a reduced rate towards wagering, and free spins are always tied to specific slots, so the spins in our partner offers can’t be used here. Since 19 January 2026 bonus wagering is capped at 10 times the bonus, but a low contribution rate can still make clearing it slow. Check the game weighting rules before you opt in. 18+, terms apply.
