Lightning Roulette is Evolution's live roulette game in which one to five Lucky Numbers are struck each round and given multipliers of 50x to 500x for straight-up bets. To pay for those multipliers, an ordinary straight-up win pays 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1, while other bets pay standard odds on a single-zero wheel.
Each round, 1 to 5 Lucky Numbers get a random multiplier between 50x and 500x on straight-up bets.
A straight-up win on a number without a multiplier pays 29 to 1, not the usual 35 to 1.
Splits, corners, dozens, red/black and other bets pay the normal European odds.
The multipliers raise variance, not your expected return; read the RTP in the game's help screen.

What Lightning Roulette is
Lightning Roulette is a live casino game from Evolution, the Swedish-founded live studio group whose UK licence is held by Evolution Malta Holding Limited. It looks like a dressed-up European table: a single-zero wheel, a presenter, and the usual betting grid. The twist arrives after betting closes. The presenter pulls a lever, and between one and five numbers are 'struck by lightning', each given a multiplier between 50x and 500x. If the ball then lands on a Lucky Number and you had a straight-up bet on it, your win is paid at that multiplier.
It sits in the live roulette section of most lobbies and is one of the best-known titles on Evolution's own company website (opens in a new tab). Our casino games hub covers other live formats, and the live casino UK page explains how streamed games work in general.
How a Lightning Roulette round works, step by step
Betting opens. Place chips on the layout as you would on any European table: numbers, splits, streets, corners, lines or outside bets.
Betting closes when the timer ends. You cannot change bets after this point.
The presenter pulls the lever and lightning strikes between one and five Lucky Numbers. Each one shows a multiplier from 50x to 500x.
The ball is launched. Evolution's game page states that the ball is spun automatically by an auto roulette wheel rather than by hand.
The winning number is announced and bets are settled. A straight-up bet on a Lucky Number is paid at its multiplier; a straight-up win on any other number pays 29 to 1.
All other winning bets are paid at standard odds, with no multipliers.
Place your next bets manually when betting reopens; UK rules do not allow autoplay.
Multipliers are assigned after you bet and are drawn at random, so there is no way to choose a Lucky Number in advance.
Lightning Roulette payouts compared with standard roulette
Only one line of the pay table changes. Everything else matches the single-zero game described on our European roulette page.
Lightning Roulette vs standard European roulette payouts
Start with the straight-up bet. On a normal European table, a £1 straight-up bet placed 37 times wins once on average, returning £36: 97.30% of the £37 staked. In Lightning Roulette, a normal hit returns only £30 (£29 plus your stake). If no multipliers existed, the return would be £30 out of £37, or about 81.1%. The multipliers have to make up the gap, so the average value of the lightning strikes is what brings the straight-up return back towards the standard level.
That shifts how the return is delivered. Most straight-up wins are smaller than usual, and a few are much larger. The long-run percentage stays below 100%, so the game still has a house edge. Evolution's public game page does not state the RTP; the figure for each bet type is shown in the game's help screen, which is the number to trust for the table you are playing. For splits, corners, dozens and even-money bets, the standard payouts on a 37-pocket wheel mean the maths matches European roulette.

Variance: why Lightning Roulette sessions swing more
Volatility, or variance, describes how widely results spread around the average. Lightning Roulette deliberately raises it for straight-up bets. Imagine a player staking £1 on the same number for 100 rounds. They expect about 2.7 hits. Without a multiplier, each hit returns £30, so three hits return £90 against £100 staked. With one of those hits on a Lucky Number, the session could finish well ahead; with none, it finishes behind even when the number comes in.
That is the trade the game offers: smaller everyday wins in exchange for an occasional larger one. It does not change the fact that the casino keeps a share of stakes over time. Our guide to volatility explained covers the same idea for slots, and the expected value glossary entry explains the average-return calculation.
Lightning Roulette variants and related games
The lightning idea has spread across Evolution's range. The most direct spin-off is XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, which Evolution describes as adding Chain Lightning (up to nine extra Lucky Numbers) and Double Strike multipliers with a potential 2000x. Other titles use the same concept on different games, including Lightning Dice, Lightning Blackjack and Lightning Baccarat.

Lightning Roulette myths and betting systems
'Lucky Numbers favour certain parts of the wheel.' They are drawn at random each round, after bets close.
'Covering lots of numbers catches more lightning.' Spreading £1 across 20 numbers means 19 losing chips whenever one wins; each chip still carries its own edge.
'A number that was struck last round will be struck again.' Each round's draw is independent.
'Doubling up after losses works better with multipliers.' Systems such as the Martingale do not change the edge and rely on even-money bets that never receive multipliers.
Lightning Roulette at a UK-licensed casino must follow the rules that cover all online casino games. Since 17 January 2025 that means no autoplay, your net position and elapsed session time on screen, and no playing several casino games at once in the same window. You must also be age-verified before you can play, and credit cards cannot be used to fund your account. The game design rules page lists each requirement with its date.
Only play at sites licensed by the Gambling Commission. In July 2026 the Commission announced that Evolution Malta Holding Limited would pay £4.75m (opens in a new tab) after its games appeared on unlicensed sites accessible in Great Britain. Unlicensed sites give you none of the UK protections, such as dispute resolution and GAMSTOP. Our guide on how to check a casino licence takes two minutes.
Budgeting for Lightning Roulette in pounds
Because the multipliers concentrate returns into rare hits, a straight-up budget can run down quickly between them. Say you bring £30 and play £1 on one number each round. A typical live round lasts long enough that you might play 40 to 60 rounds an hour. Over 40 rounds you would expect a little over one ordinary hit, returning £30, so finishing the hour short of your £30 is a common result. Outside bets reduce the swings but receive no multipliers.

Frequently asked questions
How does Lightning Roulette work?
Lightning Roulette works like European roulette with one extra step: after betting closes, one to five Lucky Numbers are struck and given multipliers from 50x to 500x. If the ball lands on a Lucky Number and you have a straight-up bet on it, you are paid at the multiplier. A straight-up win on any other number pays 29 to 1. All other bets pay standard odds. Our online roulette UK guide explains the base game.
Why does Lightning Roulette pay 29 to 1?
Lightning Roulette pays 29 to 1 on ordinary straight-up wins to fund the multipliers on Lucky Numbers. On a standard European table the same bet pays 35 to 1. The reduction takes value from every normal hit and returns it through the occasional 50x to 500x payout. The game still has a house edge overall, and the exact RTP is shown in the help screen. For how standard payouts are set, see roulette odds and payouts.
What is the highest multiplier in Lightning Roulette?
The highest multiplier in Lightning Roulette is 500x, applied to a straight-up bet on a Lucky Number. Multipliers range from 50x to 500x and are assigned at random to between one and five numbers each round. A £1 straight-up bet on a 500x Lucky Number would win £500. High multipliers are rare by design. XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, a separate game, advertises a potential 2000x through Double Strike. See XXXtreme Lightning Roulette.
Do multipliers apply to red or black in Lightning Roulette?
No, multipliers in Lightning Roulette apply only to straight-up bets on single numbers. Red, black, odd, even, high, low, dozens, columns, splits, streets, corners and lines are paid at standard odds and never receive a multiplier. Those bets therefore behave exactly as they do on a single-zero European table, including losing when zero lands. If you only play outside bets, a standard table gives the same maths. See outside bets.
Is Lightning Roulette a live game?
Yes, Lightning Roulette is a live game streamed from an Evolution studio with a presenter. According to Evolution's game description, the ball is launched automatically by an auto roulette wheel and the presenter triggers the Lucky Numbers with a lever after betting closes. The results come from the physical wheel, not a random number generator. For how live games are filmed and settled, see are live dealers real.
What is the RTP of Lightning Roulette?
The RTP of Lightning Roulette is shown in the game's help screen and can differ by bet type, so check it there before you play. Evolution's public game page does not state it. For splits, corners, dozens and even-money bets, payouts are standard on a single-zero wheel, which gives the same maths as European roulette. Straight-up bets depend on the multipliers to make up for the 29 to 1 base payout. Our RTP explainer shows how to read it.
Can you predict the Lucky Numbers in Lightning Roulette?
No, the Lucky Numbers in Lightning Roulette are chosen at random each round, after betting has closed. There is no pattern to which numbers are struck or which multipliers they get, and past strikes have no effect on future ones. Tools or tips claiming to predict them do not work. The winning number on the wheel is equally unpredictable. Our page on the gambler's fallacy explains why past results can mislead.
Is Lightning Roulette available in the UK?
Yes, Lightning Roulette is offered at many UK-licensed online casinos through their live casino sections. Evolution holds a Gambling Commission licence through Evolution Malta Holding Limited. Make sure the casino itself is licensed, because the Commission has acted where Evolution games appeared on unlicensed sites accessible in Great Britain. Age verification, the autoplay ban and net position display all apply. Our are online casinos safe in the UK page covers the protections.
Is Lightning Roulette better than normal roulette?
Lightning Roulette is not better or worse in a simple sense; it changes the shape of the returns. Straight-up wins are usually smaller (29 to 1) with occasional large multiplied wins, so sessions swing more. Outside bets are the same as normal European roulette. The house edge still applies, so neither version is a way to make money. If you prefer steadier results, a standard single-zero table suits better. Compare formats in live vs RNG casino games.
Can I use autoplay on Lightning Roulette?
No, autoplay is not available on Lightning Roulette at UK-licensed casinos. Since 17 January 2025 the Gambling Commission's rules require every round of an online casino game to be started by the player. You can usually repeat your previous bet with a rebet button, but you have to press it each round. The automated ball launch is part of the wheel, not an autoplay feature. See the autoplay ban page for the history of the rule.
