XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is Evolution's high-volatility spin-off of Lightning Roulette, adding Chain Lightning and Double Strike to the familiar random multipliers. Straight-up bets on struck numbers can be boosted up to 500x, and Double Strike can lift an existing multiplier as high as 2,000x, according to Evolution's game page.
Lightning Numbers carry random multipliers of up to 500x on straight-up bets.
Chain Lightning can add up to nine extra multiplied spots; Double Strike can push a multiplier to a maximum of 2,000x.
Unboosted straight-up wins pay less than the standard 35 to 1, which funds the multipliers; check the help screen.
Most sessions never see a top multiplier, so expect long gaps between straight-up wins.

What XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is
The original Lightning Roulette took a single-zero wheel and added random multipliers to a handful of numbers each round. The XXXtreme version keeps that idea and stacks more layers on top: extra multiplied spots that chain across the layout, and second strikes that can raise a multiplier already in play. The result is a game where the occasional straight-up win can be very large and the ordinary ones are smaller than on a standard table.
It is a live game from Evolution, streamed from a studio with a real wheel and a dealer, and it's listed among the company's live titles on Evolution's website (opens in a new tab). The base layout is standard European roulette, so all the familiar bets are available.
This page explains each feature, shows the arithmetic behind the reduced base payout, and sets out what to expect from a session. We don't quote an RTP or the exact base payout because we couldn't confirm the current UK figures from an official source; both appear in the game's help screen.
Lightning Numbers, Chain Lightning and Double Strike explained
After betting closes and before the ball lands, the game runs a short graphics sequence that marks numbers on the layout. Evolution's game page describes three layers:
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette features

Limit stated by Evolution
Lightning Numbers
Selected numbers receive a random multiplier
Up to 500x
Chain Lightning
Adds further lucky bet spots to the round
Up to nine additional spots
Double Strike

Maximum 2,000x
Only a straight-up bet on a struck number collects a multiplier. A split or corner that includes a lightning number doesn't, and nor do outside bets. If the ball lands on a lightning number and you have a straight-up chip on it, your payout uses the multiplier instead of the base rate.
How often Chain Lightning and Double Strike appear, and how multipliers are distributed, isn't published on the game page. Treat the 2,000x figure as a ceiling that very few rounds reach.
How to play XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, step by step
Open the table and check its limits and the payout list in the help screen, including the base straight-up rate.
Place bets on the layout during the betting window; only straight-up chips can collect multipliers.
Betting closes and the lightning sequence marks Lightning Numbers, with any Chain Lightning spots and Double Strikes.
The dealer spins and the ball lands.
Bets settle: a straight-up on a struck number pays its multiplier, other winning straight-ups pay the base rate, and remaining bets pay the table's listed odds.
Multipliers have to be paid for somewhere. On a standard single-zero table a straight-up pays 35 to 1, so over 37 spins one hit returns 36 units for 37 staked, which is where the 2.70% edge comes from. Lightning games lower the base straight-up payout and use the difference to fund the occasional big multiplier.
To see the shape of it, take an illustrative base payout of 29 to 1, which is lower than the standard rate. Every unboosted straight-up win then returns 30 units instead of 36, giving up 6 units per hit. Across many rounds, those 6 units per ordinary win build the pool that pays for 50x, 500x and the rare 2,000x results. Whether the overall return ends up above or below 97.30% depends on the exact base rate and how often multipliers land, which is why the help screen's RTP is the figure that matters.

XXXtreme Lightning Roulette RTP and house edge
Lightning-style games publish an RTP for straight-up bets and separate figures for other bets where they differ. Open the help screen and look for the list; it's normally a percentage per bet type. Subtract each figure from 100 to get the house edge.
To compare with a standard table, the single-zero benchmark is 97.30% on every standard bet. If XXXtreme's straight-up RTP is close to that, the multipliers are mainly reshaping variance, not cost. If it's lower, you're paying slightly more for the chance of a large hit. Either way, a lightning sequence doesn't change your odds of the ball landing on any number; each pocket stays 1 in 37. The Wizard of Odds roulette guide (opens in a new tab) explains the single-zero maths in detail.
Volatility: what a typical XXXtreme session looks like
Putting value into rare outcomes makes results streaky. A straight-up player at any roulette table wins about once every 37 spins on average, and only a fraction of those wins will coincide with a lightning strike on that number. A 2,000x result needs several things to line up at once: your number struck, a Double Strike on it, and the ball landing there.
In practice that means a session of 100 spins at £1 straight-up will usually show two or three ordinary wins at the reduced base rate, often finishing behind, with an outside chance of one boosted hit that changes the picture. That spread is what volatility describes, and it doesn't alter the long-run cost set by the RTP.

Random multipliers on straight-ups
The three games share the core trade: a reduced base straight-up payout in return for random multipliers. XXXtreme pushes furthest towards rare, large outcomes. Read about Quantum Roulette, or compare with a standard single-zero table on our online roulette page.
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette myths and systems
'Bet on numbers that were struck last round.' Lightning numbers are chosen fresh every round; previous strikes have no influence.
'Covering all 37 numbers straight-up means a multiplier hit.' It means one win per spin, at a cost of 37 chips, and most of those wins pay the reduced base rate, so the spin usually loses money.
'Chase the 2,000x.' Increasing stakes to catch a rare result is chasing; the Martingale system shows how quickly progressions break budgets.
'The animation shows where the ball will land.' The graphics run before the spin and don't influence it.
High-volatility games need either small stakes or a large session budget to give you a reasonable number of rounds. A £50 budget at £1 per spin on straight-ups could run out well before 50 spins if no number lands; dropping to 20p per spin gives about 250 spins of the same budget. Splitting your stake between an outside bet and one straight-up smooths results a little while keeping a chance at a multiplier.

Frequently asked questions
What is XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
It is a live roulette game from Evolution built on a single-zero European wheel, with random multipliers added to straight-up bets. Lightning Numbers can carry up to 500x, Chain Lightning adds up to nine more multiplied spots, and Double Strike can raise a multiplier to a maximum of 2,000x. In return, ordinary straight-up wins pay less than the standard 35 to 1. It is a more volatile version of Lightning Roulette.
What is the maximum multiplier in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
Evolution's game page gives a maximum of 2,000x, reached when Double Strike increases a multiplier already in play. Standard Lightning Numbers go up to 500x. Only a straight-up bet on the struck number collects the multiplier, so a £1 straight-up at 2,000x would return the multiplier win plus the stake, subject to the casino's maximum payout terms. Such results are very rare. Our slot max win explained guide covers how maximum wins and payout caps generally work.
What is the RTP of XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
The game's help screen lists the RTP for each bet type, and that's the figure to rely on, because we couldn't verify the current UK numbers from an official source. Use 97.30%, the return of standard single-zero roulette, as your benchmark. A lower straight-up RTP means you pay a little more for the chance of a large multiplier. Our RTP explained guide shows how to turn a percentage into expected cost for your stake.
Do outside bets get multipliers in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
No. Multipliers only apply to straight-up bets on struck numbers. Outside bets such as red/black, odd/even and dozens are paid at the rates in the help screen and don't benefit from Lightning, Chain Lightning or Double Strike. If you prefer steadier play, outside bets let you play the table without the multiplier volatility, though the house edge still applies. Our outside bets glossary entry explains these bets and their usual payouts.
What is Chain Lightning?
Chain Lightning is a feature that adds extra lucky bet spots to a round. According to Evolution's game page, it can add up to nine additional spots on top of the regular Lightning Numbers. Each extra spot carries a multiplier for straight-up bets on it, so more of the layout is boosted in that round. It doesn't change the chance of the ball landing on any number, which stays 1 in 37. See inside bets for the bets that can benefit.
What is Double Strike?
Double Strike is a second hit that lands on a spot already carrying a multiplier and increases it. Evolution's game page says the maximum multiplier reachable this way is 2,000x. Because it can only boost an existing lucky spot, it's the rarest layer in the game, and it only pays if you hold a straight-up bet on that number and the ball lands there. Treat it as an occasional bonus rather than something to plan for; our multiplier entry explains how multipliers work generally.
Is XXXtreme Lightning Roulette better than normal roulette?
It isn't better value, just more volatile. Ordinary straight-up wins pay less, and the difference funds occasional very large multipliers. Whether its RTP is slightly above or below a standard single-zero table depends on the figures in the help screen. If you want the steadiest and simplest version of the game, a standard European table or a French table with la partage is the benchmark. Our compare live vs RNG casino games page discusses other trade-offs.
Can I predict which numbers will get lightning?
No. Lightning Numbers, Chain Lightning spots and Double Strikes are generated randomly for each round after betting closes, so there's no pattern to follow and no way to know them before you bet. Previous rounds have no influence. The same is true of where the ball lands. Tracking history or betting on 'hot' numbers doesn't change the odds, as our page on can you predict roulette explains with the maths.
Are there limits on how much I can bet?
Each table sets its own minimum and maximum, shown on the betting grid. The £5 and £2 stake limits introduced in 2025 apply to reel-based online slots, not roulette. Some tables also set a maximum payout per round, which matters when multipliers reach the hundreds or thousands; the help screen states it. Because the game is volatile, a personal deposit limit is useful; how to set deposit limits walks you through it.
