Live casino UK explained

Live casino in the UK means real dealers running real tables, streamed from a studio to your phone or computer, with bets placed through an on-screen interface. You get the pace and feel of a casino floor with the odds of the standard game. This guide covers how the studios work, which games have the lowest house edge, and the UK rules that apply as of October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Live dealer results come from physical cards, wheels and dice, read by cameras and software; the house edge is the same as the standard game.
  • European roulette's edge is 2.70%; blackjack with good rules and basic strategy is far lower; game shows usually cost more.
  • The £5 and £2 stake limits are for online slots, so they do not apply to live roulette or blackjack; table limits do.
  • None of our partners runs a live-casino-specific welcome offer; check game restrictions before using bonus money at live tables.

What is a live casino?

A live casino is the part of an online casino where games are run by human dealers in real time. A dealer spins a real roulette wheel or deals real cards in a purpose-built studio, cameras stream the action to you, and you place bets through buttons overlaid on the video. When the betting window closes, the round is played out and results are settled automatically to your balance.

This differs from RNG table games, where software generates every card or spin instantly. Live games are slower, more social and, for many players, more trustworthy-feeling, because you can see the physical outcome. The underlying odds of a standard game do not change, though: live European roulette has the same house edge as the RNG version. Our casino games hub covers both formats, and are live dealers real? answers the most common doubt.

How live casino games work behind the screen

Live casino studios are built like small TV studios. Several pieces of technology work together:

  • Cameras at several angles, with close-ups for the wheel or cards.
  • Recognition systems that read results: sensors in the roulette wheel, and card scanners or optical character recognition for card games.
  • A game server that opens and closes betting, matches results to bets and pays out.
  • The dealer, trained to run rounds at a steady pace and talk to players through a chat window.
  • A pit boss and support team off camera, handling disputes and technical faults.

Results are therefore determined physically, not by an RNG, and the system records each round. If your connection drops mid-round, the game's rules decide what happens to your bet; usually a placed bet is settled on the result. Our page on losing connection mid-game explains the typical policies.

How to play live casino games online: step by step

  1. Log in to a UK-licensed casino and open the live casino lobby. Your age and identity are verified before you can play.
  2. Choose a table. Each shows the game, the dealer, the minimum and maximum bet and, often, seats available.
  3. Read the help screen for the rules, payouts and RTP of that table, especially on variants and game shows.
  4. Wait for the betting window, select a chip value and place your bets on the layout before the timer ends.
  5. Watch the round play out. In blackjack, you make decisions such as hit or stand within a time limit.
  6. Check that the result has settled to your balance. Bets for each new round need your action; autoplay is not allowed on UK online casino games.

Live casino games and their house edges

The house edge is the average share of each bet the casino keeps over time. Standard live tables share the published edges of the classic games; variants and side bets usually cost more. Always check the help screen, because rules and payouts vary by table.

Types of live dealer games at UK casinos

Live roulette

European, French and American wheels, plus speed tables, multi-wheel and immersive camera versions. Variants such as Lightning Roulette add random multipliers in exchange for reduced straight-up payouts. See how to play live roulette.

Live blackjack

Seven-seat tables where seats fill up, plus unlimited-player formats in which everyone plays the same initial hand. Bet behind lets you wager on a seated player's hand when tables are full. Read how to play live blackjack.

Live baccarat and other card games

Standard, speed and squeeze baccarat, Dragon Tiger, and poker-based games such as Casino Hold'em and Three Card Poker. Our online baccarat page explains the bets.

Live game shows

Money wheels with bonus rounds, such as Crazy Time and Monopoly Live, built for entertainment with multiple bets of different RTPs. They are covered on our live game shows page.

UK rules for live casino games

Live dealer games fall under the same licence regime as the rest of the casino, but some rules that get a lot of attention apply only to slots.

Which rules apply to live casino in Great Britain
RuleApplies to live tables?Detail
£5 / £2 slot stake limits (2025)NoThey cover reel-based online slots only; table limits set the maximum
Autoplay banYesExtended to all online casino games from 17 January 2025
5-second minimum game cycleWritten for non-slot casino games from 17 January 2025Live rounds take far longer anyway
Credit card banYesNo credit card deposits since 14 April 2020
10x bonus wagering capYesAny bonus used at live tables is capped at 10x since 19 January 2026
Age verificationYesBefore any play, since 7 May 2019

Both the casino and the studio supplier need Gambling Commission licences. That matters: in July 2026 the Commission announced a £4.75m settlement with Evolution Malta Holding (opens in a new tab) after its games were found on unlicensed sites accessible to people in Great Britain. Playing at a UK-licensed casino keeps you inside the protections. Our pages on the autoplay ban and table game speed rules give the dates.

Live casino studios and suppliers

A small number of suppliers provide most live tables in UK lobbies. Evolution, founded in 2006 in Stockholm, is best known for Lightning Roulette, Crazy Time and Monopoly Live, and also owns the Ezugi live brand. Playtech has long run live casino alongside its slots, and Pragmatic Play added live tables to its range. Some casinos also have branded tables with their own dealers and colours, supplied by one of these studios.

You can usually filter a live lobby by supplier. If you prefer a particular rule set, such as la partage on French roulette, filtering is quicker than opening each table.

Live casino bankroll maths

Live tables are slower than RNG games, which helps a budget last, but stakes are often higher. These are illustrative figures for an hour's play; the number of rounds per hour varies by table and is assumed here for the sake of the maths.

Illustrative hour at live tables
GameAssumed rounds per hourStake per roundTotal stakedAverage cost
Blackjack (0.5% edge)60£10£600£3.00
European roulette (2.70%)40£5£200£5.40
Baccarat banker (1.06%)50£10£500£5.30
American roulette (5.26%)40£5£200£10.52

These averages hide big swings: with £10 hands, a bad run of a dozen hands can cost £100 or more. Our bankroll guide explains how to size stakes so a budget can absorb ordinary variance.

Live casino myths and betting systems

  • "Dealers can control the wheel." Wheels and shuffles are monitored, and results are recorded; licensed studios are audited.
  • "Tracking past results reveals a pattern." The results board shows history, but each spin or hand is independent.
  • "The Martingale works on even-money bets." Doubling after losses runs into table limits and your budget; it does not change the edge. See the Martingale system.
  • "Card counting beats live blackjack." Live shoes are often shuffled well before the end, which removes most of the benefit; see card counting online.

Live chat etiquette and playing safely

Dealers chat with players, and moderators remove abusive messages. Keep chat friendly and never share personal or account details in it; our live dealer etiquette guide covers the norms. The social feel of a live table can make sessions run longer than planned, so set a reality check and a loss limit before you sit down. Help is free and confidential from the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, and GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) lets you block all UK-licensed sites at once.

Frequently asked questions

Is live casino rigged?

Live casino games at UK-licensed sites are not rigged: results come from physical wheels, cards and dice, read by monitored equipment, and both the casino and the studio need Gambling Commission licences. Each game still has a house edge, the same as the standard version, so the casino profits over time. The risks come from unlicensed sites, where none of this oversight applies. Check the licence on the Commission's public register before playing. Read are live dealers real? and are online casinos rigged?

What is the best live casino game for odds?

Live blackjack, played with basic strategy at a table with good rules, usually has the lowest house edge, around 0.5%. The baccarat banker bet, at 1.06%, is next and needs no decisions. French roulette with la partage brings even-money bets down to 1.35%. Game shows and side bets generally cost more. Whatever you choose, losses are likely over time. See which casino games have the best odds? and our blackjack basic strategy guide.

Do stake limits apply to live casino in the UK?

The £5 and £2 stake limits introduced in 2025 apply only to online slots, which the Gambling Commission defines as reel-based casino games. Live roulette, blackjack, baccarat and game shows are not covered, so the maximum bet is set by each table's limits instead. Some tables allow stakes in the hundreds or thousands of pounds. Casinos can also set their own limits based on your account. Read the £5 slot stake limit page and our guide to table limits.

What is the minimum bet at live casino tables?

It varies by table and casino, from small amounts on some roulette and game show tables to several pounds or more on standard blackjack. The minimum and maximum appear on each table tile and in the game, and VIP tables have much higher minimums. Choose a table where the minimum is a small fraction of your session budget, so a short losing run does not end your play. Our guides to low deposit casinos and table limits help match tables to budgets.

Can I use a bonus on live casino games?

Sometimes, but many welcome bonuses exclude live games or count them at a reduced rate towards wagering. Since 19 January 2026 bonus wagering in Great Britain cannot exceed 10x, yet the eligible games list still decides where bonus money can be played. Free spins are for slots only. None of our partners currently runs a live-casino-specific welcome offer, so read the terms before staking bonus funds at a table. See our live casino bonus explainer and game weighting guide.

What happens if my connection drops during a live game?

The game's rules decide, and they are in the help screen. Usually, a bet placed before the betting window closed stands and is settled on the actual result, and winnings are added to your balance. In blackjack, if you were due to make a decision, the table often applies a default action, such as standing. Keep a note of the time and table, and contact support if the result did not settle. Read what happens if I lose connection mid-game? and how to complain about a casino.

Are live casino dealers real people?

Yes. Dealers are trained staff working for the studio supplier, there to run games and talk to players, and they work in studios that are monitored and audited. They do not decide outcomes: wheels, cards and dice do, read by sensors and cameras. Some game shows also have presenters. Be polite in chat; abuse is removed and can lead to restrictions. Our page are live dealers real? explains studio checks, and the live dealer etiquette guide covers chat.

Can I play live casino on my phone?

Yes. Live casino streams are designed for mobile browsers and casino apps, with layouts that rearrange for portrait screens. A stable connection matters more than for RNG games, because video needs steady bandwidth and a dropped stream can leave you watching rather than betting. Streaming video also uses far more data than a slot, so Wi-Fi is sensible. The rules and odds are the same as on a computer. See can I play casino games on my phone? and casino apps vs mobile sites.

What is the difference between live casino and First Person games?

First Person games, made by Evolution, are RNG versions of live titles: the look and layout mirror the live table, but cards and spins are generated by software, without a dealer or fixed schedule. They usually run faster, and since 17 January 2025 UK rules require at least 5 seconds per game cycle on non-slot RNG casino games. Live tables use physical equipment and real dealers. Both formats have the same standard house edges. Read our First Person games page and RNG explained.
