Megaways slots explained

Megaways slots are games where the number of symbols on each reel changes every spin, so the number of ways to win changes too, up to 117,649 on a standard six-reel layout. The mechanic was created by Big Time Gaming and is licensed to other studios. Here is how the ways are counted, why the games are so volatile, and what UK rules mean for them in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Ways to win = symbols on reel 1 × reel 2 × … × reel 6, so a spin can have anything from 64 to 117,649 ways on the standard layout.
  • More ways does not mean better odds: the paytable is scaled so the RTP still lands around the published figure.
  • Most Megaways games are high volatility, with cascades and growing multipliers concentrating returns in rare spins.
  • UK versions have no feature buy, a £5 (25+) or £2 (18–24) stake cap and at least 2.5 seconds per spin.

What are Megaways slots?

On a traditional video slot, every reel shows the same number of symbols on every spin, and wins are counted along fixed paylines or a fixed number of ways. A Megaways slot breaks that rule. On each spin, each reel randomly shows between two and seven symbols (on the standard design), so the grid changes shape every time and so does the number of ways to win.

The mechanic comes from Big Time Gaming, founded in Sydney in 2011 and now owned by Evolution. Bonanza, a gold-mining game, was one of its first big Megaways hits, and the format is now licensed to many other studios, including Blueprint Gaming, Relax Gaming, Red Tiger and Pragmatic Play. That is why you will find Megaways versions of familiar UK titles such as Rainbow Riches and Fishin' Frenzy in the casino games hub.

How Megaways ways to win are counted

The number of ways is simply the number of symbols on each reel multiplied together. On a standard six-reel game with two to seven symbols per reel, the range runs from 2⁶ = 64 to 7⁶ = 117,649.

6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 66⁶46,656
7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 77⁶117,649

Not every Megaways game uses the standard layout. In our slot data, Primal Megaways runs to 46,656 ways (two to six symbols per reel), Eye of Horus Megaways and Fishin' Frenzy Megaways run to 15,625, and some Pragmatic Play titles, such as Great Rhino Megaways and Buffalo King Megaways, reach 200,704 by adding a horizontal reel above the middle reels. White Rabbit Megaways reaches 248,832 when its reels expand in free spins. The help screen gives the range for each game, and our ways to win glossary entry covers the general idea.

How a Megaways win is calculated

Wins count matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any position. The payout is the symbol's value multiplied by the number of combinations that form. Take an illustrative spin with a £1 stake:

  1. Reel 1 shows two lion symbols, reel 2 shows one, and reel 3 shows three. Reel 4 has none.
  2. That is a three-of-a-kind win, and the number of combinations is 2 × 1 × 3 = 6.
  3. Suppose the paytable says three lions pay 0.2x the total stake per combination.
  4. The win is 6 × 0.2 × £1 = £1.20.
  5. If the game uses cascades, the winning lions disappear, new symbols fall in, and any new win is added within the same game cycle.

Notice the paytable values are small. With up to 117,649 ways in play, a game paying full line prizes on every way would hand out far more than it takes in, so each way is worth a fraction of the stake. That scaling is what keeps the RTP at its published level. Our guide to cascading reels shows how chain reactions extend a single spin.

Why Megaways slots are so volatile

Most Megaways titles are rated high or very high volatility. Three design choices pile up:

  • Variable ways: a 64-way spin and a 117,649-way spin have very different win potential, so results swing from spin to spin.
  • Cascades: chains of wins can keep a spin going, producing occasional large totals and many small ones.
  • Growing multipliers: in several titles, including Bonanza, free spins add to a multiplier with each cascade, so a long chain in the bonus can multiply returns many times over.

The result is a game that spends long periods returning small amounts and then, rarely, pays a large multiple. If your budget is small, that pattern can end a session before a feature lands. Our volatility guide and the answer to high or low volatility? explain how to match a game to your budget.

UK rules that shape Megaways slots

Megaways games are reel-based online slots, so every British slot rule applies. Because the games are volatile and spins can involve long cascades, some rules are more noticeable here than on simpler games.

How UK rules apply to Megaways slots
RuleSinceWhat it means on a Megaways game
2.5-second minimum spin31 October 2021Cascades can take longer, but no spin can be shorter
No autoplay, turbo or slam stop31 October 2021You start every spin, and you cannot skip cascade animations to speed up
No celebrating losses31 October 2021A cascade chain that returns less than your stake cannot be shown as a win
£5 stake cap (25+)9 April 2025Total stake per game cycle, including any extra stake inside it
£2 stake cap (18–24)21 May 2025Lower cap for younger adults
Feature buyNot offered to GB playersBonus rounds trigger only through normal play

The Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains game cycles in detail, and the government's announcement of the £2 limit for under-25s (opens in a new tab) sets out why younger adults have a lower cap. Many Megaways games sold elsewhere include a button to buy the free spins round; the versions supplied to Great Britain do not, as our bonus buy page explains.

Megaways max wins and the stake cap

Max win figures are quoted as multiples of the stake, so the UK caps put a ceiling on the pound amount. A 50,000x cap at the £5 maximum is £250,000; at the £2 maximum for under-25s it is £100,000; at a 20p stake it is £10,000. These are the most a single game cycle can pay, and they are reached on a vanishingly small share of spins, if at all. Read more in our max win guide.

Megaways bankroll maths: a £40 example

Say you have £40 for a session on a 96% Megaways game. The average cost is 4% of everything staked, but high volatility means the path to that average is rough.

£40 on a 96% Megaways slot at different stakes
StakeSpins if nothing came backAverage cost per 100 spinsFeel
10p40040pLong session, small swings
20p20080pModerate
50p80£2Short; one cold run can end it
£140£4Very short unless a feature lands early

On a volatile game the second column matters as much as the third: the fewer spins your budget covers, the more likely it is to run out before a bonus round arrives. Our bankroll basics guide covers stake sizing.

Megaways myths

  • "117,649 ways means you win more often." The paytable is scaled down to match; the RTP still sits near the published figure.
  • "Tall reels mean a big win is coming." Reel heights are random each spin and say nothing about the next.
  • "Cascades are free extra spins." They are part of the same game cycle and already counted in the RTP.
  • "The bonus is due after 300 spins." Feature triggers are random; read how slot bonus rounds work.

Playing Megaways slots safely

Big swings can make it tempting to keep going after a loss to catch the next feature. Set a deposit limit and a session time before you start, and walk away when either is reached. Frequently asked questions

What does Megaways mean?

Megaways is a slot mechanic, created by Big Time Gaming, in which the number of symbols on each reel changes randomly every spin. Because ways to win are calculated by multiplying the symbols on each reel, the total changes too, up to 117,649 on the standard six-reel layout with two to seven symbols per reel. Other studios use the mechanic under licence. It is a design feature, not a type of jackpot or bonus. See the Big Time Gaming profile and our glossary entry on ways to win.

Do Megaways slots pay better?

Not in terms of return. Megaways games publish RTPs in the same broad range as other slots, often around 96%, and the paytable is scaled so that more ways do not mean a higher return. What changes is the pattern of results: most Megaways titles are high volatility, so wins are uneven and occasionally large. Check the help screen for the RTP of the version at your casino. Read RTP explained and what is a good RTP? for context.

What is the maximum number of ways on a Megaways slot?

On the standard design it is 117,649, from six reels each showing seven symbols. Some games go higher by adding a horizontal reel or expanding reels in free spins: our data lists Great Rhino Megaways at up to 200,704 ways and White Rabbit Megaways at up to 248,832. Others go lower, such as Primal Megaways at 46,656 and Eye of Horus Megaways at 15,625. The minimum on a standard six-reel game is 64. Our slot features guide explains other ways-based mechanics.

Can I buy the bonus on Megaways slots in the UK?

No. Megaways games supplied to UK-licensed casinos do not include a feature buy option, so free spins and bonus rounds trigger only through normal spins. Versions sold in other markets may show a buy button, which is one reason why game reviews from abroad can describe features you will not see. Players at offshore sites may find the option, but those sites are not licensed in Great Britain. See our page on bonus buy and the guide to offshore casinos.

Who makes Megaways slots?

Big Time Gaming created the mechanic and makes titles such as Bonanza Megaways, Extra Chilli Megaways and Millionaire Megaways. Many other studios use it under licence, including Blueprint Gaming (Fishin' Frenzy Megaways, Primal Megaways), Barcrest (Rainbow Riches Megaways), Red Tiger (Gonzo's Quest Megaways), Relax Gaming (Temple Tumble Megaways) and Pragmatic Play (Great Rhino Megaways). Licensed titles must still meet UK rules when supplied to British casinos. Browse our providers directory or the Pragmatic Play profile.

Are Megaways slots good for small budgets?

They can be played on a small budget, but their high volatility makes them less forgiving than steadier games. A £20 budget at 20p covers 100 spins if nothing came back, and on a volatile Megaways title it is quite possible for that to run out before a bonus round lands. Lower stakes give you more spins and a better chance of seeing the features. If steady play matters to you, consider a low-volatility slot instead. Our guides to gambling budgets and volatility help you decide.

How do cascades work on Megaways slots?

After a win, the winning symbols are removed and new ones drop into the gaps, which can create another win in the same spin. This repeats until no new wins form. In several Megaways titles, the reel heights and ways can change as symbols fall in, and in free spins a multiplier may rise with every cascade. All of this belongs to one game cycle, so it counts as a single spin for the stake cap and speed rules. Read our guides to cascading reels and slot multipliers.

What stake limit applies to Megaways slots?

The same as any online slot in Great Britain: £5 per game cycle if you are 25 or over, in force since 9 April 2025, and £2 if you are 18 to 24, since 21 May 2025. The game cycle includes every cascade and feature that follows a spin, and any further stake placed within it counts towards the cap. Casinos apply the limit based on your verified age. See our pages on the £5 stake limit and the latest slot rules.

Are there new Megaways casinos worth joining?

We do not list unverified new casinos. Any site offering Megaways games to people in Great Britain must hold a Gambling Commission licence, which you can confirm on the public register in a couple of minutes. A new brand from an established licence holder can be fine; an unlicensed site offering bonus buys and crypto deposits is a red flag. Established partners carry Megaways games too. Read new Megaways casinos and how to check a casino licence.
