Big Time Gaming casino games started the Megaways craze: the Sydney studio’s reels change height every spin, giving up to 117,649 ways to win in games such as Bonanza, Extra Chilli and White Rabbit. This page explains how the mechanic works with real numbers, what Evolution’s ownership means, how its games reach UK players and which other studios use Megaways under licence.
Founded in Sydney in 2011, Big Time Gaming invented Megaways, which it licenses to many other studios.
Evolution announced a deal to buy the studio in April 2021; Evolution’s GB licensee is Evolution Malta Holding Limited (account 41655).
Megaways ways-to-win equal the symbols on each reel multiplied together: six reels of seven gives 117,649.
Its published RTPs mostly sit between about 96% and 97.2%, with high volatility the norm.

Big Time Gaming casino games: the studio behind Megaways
Big Time Gaming (often shortened to BTG) was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2011, and Nik Robinson leads it as chief executive. Its catalogue is small next to the largest suppliers, but its influence is huge: the Megaways mechanic it created now appears in hundreds of slots from other studios, all under licence.
Beyond Megaways, BTG has developed Megaclusters, where symbols split into smaller ones, and Megapays, which adds progressive jackpots to the format. If you are new to how studios supply casinos, our software providers explainer covers the basics, and the providers hub lists the other studios we profile.
From Sydney start-up to part of Evolution
In April 2021 Evolution, the Swedish live casino company, announced a deal to buy Big Time Gaming. BTG now sits alongside NetEnt, Red Tiger and Nolimit City in Evolution’s group of slot brands. Our Evolution profile covers the parent company, including a 2026 regulatory settlement.

How Big Time Gaming games reach UK players
Every game offered to British players must come from a supplier licensed by the Gambling Commission. When we read the register’s alphabetical business listing on 20 October 2026, no business under the Big Time Gaming name appeared. Evolution’s British licensee is Evolution Malta Holding Limited, account 41655, which holds remote gambling software and casino game host licences. We could not confirm from the register alone which group company supplies BTG titles to British casinos, so check the game’s help screen, which names the supplier, and search that name on the Commission’s register of businesses (opens in a new tab).
The practical safeguard for you is the casino’s licence: a UK-licensed casino may only offer games from licensed suppliers. Our guide to checking a casino licence shows how to confirm that in two minutes. More about the group is on Evolution’s own website (opens in a new tab).
How Megaways works: the maths of changing reels
On a standard Megaways game there are six reels, and each spin shows between two and seven symbols on each reel. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, in any position, so the number of ways to win is simply the number of symbols on each reel multiplied together. That is why the ways figure changes every spin. The idea builds on ways to win slots, which use a fixed grid.

More ways does not mean a better return. The RTP is fixed by the game’s design; a spin with 117,649 ways usually pays small amounts on many ways, while the large results come from features and multipliers. Most BTG Megaways games also use cascading reels, so winning symbols are removed and replaced, giving further chances within the same paid spin.

White Rabbit’s 97.24% is one of the higher published RTPs among well-known slots; its free spins add rows to the reels, pushing the ways count far above the usual cap. Danger High Voltage is a reminder that BTG also makes fixed-grid games: it uses 4,096 ways on a 6×4 layout rather than Megaways.
Bonanza and the unlimited free spins multiplier
Bonanza is the game that made Megaways famous, and it set the template. A horizontal reel above the middle reels adds extra symbols, and cascades remove winning symbols after each win. In free spins, a win multiplier starts at 1x and rises by one with every cascade, with no upper limit on the multiplier itself (the game’s overall max win still applies).
A worked example
Say you are in free spins on a £1 stake and a spin produces four cascading wins worth 20p, 50p, 30p and £1 before multipliers. With the multiplier stepping from 1x to 4x, they pay 20p, £1, 90p and £4: £6.10 in total rather than £2. The next spin begins at the multiplier reached so far. This is why free spins rounds vary so widely: a long cascade chain early on lifts every later win. See our guide to slot multipliers for more.
Megaclusters and Megapays: BTG’s other inventions
Megaclusters starts with a grid of symbols that pay in clusters. When a symbol is part of a win it splits into four smaller symbols, increasing the grid and the potential for further clusters. Star Clusters Megaclusters (2020) publishes 96.54% with medium-high volatility. The cluster pays guide explains the basic rule that symbols must touch.
Megapays combines the Megaways format with progressive jackpots. As with any jackpot game, part of each stake funds the prize pools, so read the help screen to see how the RTP is split. Our progressive jackpots guide explains why that matters.
Megaways under licence: other studios using BTG’s mechanic
Much of the Megaways you see in a UK lobby isn’t made by BTG at all. Other studios pay to use the mechanic and build their own games around it, which is why ‘Megaways’ appears in titles from very different suppliers. Our Megaways slots page covers the genre as a whole.
How to find Big Time Gaming casino games in a UK casino
Open the slots lobby and choose the provider filter.
Select Big Time Gaming; some sites group it under Evolution, so try both.
Don’t rely on a ‘Megaways’ category alone, as it mixes BTG games with licensed versions from other studios.
Open the help screen to confirm the developer, RTP and max win.
Choose a stake within your age-band limit and set a session budget first.

Frequently asked questions
Did Big Time Gaming invent Megaways?
Yes. BTG created Megaways, with Bonanza the title that made it famous, and now licenses the mechanic to many other studios. That is why you will find Megaways titles from Blueprint, Pragmatic Play, Red Tiger, NetEnt and Barcrest as well as BTG itself. The mechanic varies the number of symbols on each reel every spin, so the ways to win change too. Our Megaways vs classic slots comparison explains how play differs.
How are Megaways ways to win calculated?
Multiply the number of symbols showing on each reel. Six reels each showing seven symbols gives 7×7×7×7×7×7 = 117,649 ways, while a spin showing 3, 5, 2, 7, 4 and 6 symbols gives 5,040. The minimum on a standard six-reel game with two symbols per reel is 64. Wins pay for matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left. The ways count doesn’t change the RTP. Our ways to win glossary entry explains the principle.
Who owns Big Time Gaming?
Evolution, the Swedish live casino group, which announced a deal to acquire Big Time Gaming in April 2021. BTG sits in Evolution’s group alongside NetEnt, Red Tiger and Nolimit City, while continuing to operate from Sydney under chief executive Nik Robinson. Evolution’s British licensee is Evolution Malta Holding Limited, account 41655. Our Evolution profile covers the parent company in more detail.
Is Big Time Gaming licensed in the UK?
Its games are offered at UK-licensed casinos, which may only use licensed suppliers, but we did not find a separate business named Big Time Gaming in the Commission’s register listing on 20 October 2026. Its parent Evolution holds GB licences through Evolution Malta Holding Limited (account 41655). The help screen of each game names the supplier, and you can search that name on the register. Our licence-checking guide shows how.
What is the RTP of Bonanza Megaways?
The published RTP is 96.00% with high volatility, and the max win depends on the version a casino runs. Bonanza is a six-reel Megaways game with a horizontal reel above the centre reels and cascading wins, and in free spins a multiplier rises by one with every cascade. On £100 of stakes the long-run average cost is about £4. Check the help screen for the version you are playing; our RTP checking guide shows where to look.
Which Big Time Gaming slot has the highest RTP?
Of the BTG games with published figures, White Rabbit Megaways is highest at 97.24%, followed by Extra Chilli at up to 96.82% in some versions and Kingmaker at 96.65%. A higher RTP lowers the average cost of play but doesn’t make winning in a session more likely; volatility shapes that. White Rabbit is rated medium-high. Our high RTP slots guide explains how to use RTP when choosing games.
What is Megaclusters?
Megaclusters is a BTG mechanic where symbols pay in clusters and any symbol that is part of a win splits into four smaller symbols. The grid grows as symbols split, creating more chances for further clusters within the same paid spin. Star Clusters Megaclusters, released in 2020, is the best-known example, with a published RTP of 96.54% and medium-high volatility. Our guide to cluster pays explains how cluster wins are counted.
Can I buy free spins in Big Time Gaming slots in the UK?
No. BTG games in some markets include a bonus buy option, but versions supplied to Great Britain don’t, so free spins are reached only through normal play. That reflects supply practice for the British market, not a rule with a start date. A buy option on a supposedly UK-facing site is a warning sign worth investigating. Our page on no bonus buy in the UK explains more.
Are Megaways slots high volatility?
Most are, including the bulk of BTG’s own range, because the large results depend on features such as cascading multipliers and free spins rather than steady base-game wins. There are exceptions among licensed titles from other studios, so read each game’s help screen. High volatility means long runs of small or no wins and occasional large ones, at the same average cost. Our guide to whether high or low volatility suits you can help.
