Megaways vs classic slots

Megaways vs classic slots is a choice between a shifting reel set with up to 117,649 ways to win and a fixed layout with a handful of paylines. Megaways games tend to be more volatile, while classic slots are simpler and steadier, but RTPs are often close. Here is how they compare in practice, with real game figures, checked 20 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Megaways reels change height every spin, so the number of ways to win changes too, commonly up to 117,649.
  • Classic slots use fixed reels and a small set of paylines, and are usually lower in volatility.
  • RTPs overlap: Rainbow Riches is listed at 95.00% and Rainbow Riches Megaways at 96%.
  • The same UK rules apply to both: £5 or £2 maximum stake, at least 2.5 seconds a spin, no autoplay.
  • Partner spins offers apply to selected games, so check whether a Megaways title is included.

Megaways vs classic slots: the key differences

Megaways slots and classic slots both take one stake per spin and pay from a paytable, but they build wins in different ways. A classic game has fixed reels and pays along set lines; a Megaways game changes the number of symbols on each reel every spin, which changes how many ways a win can form. That one design choice has knock-on effects on volatility, maximum wins and how a session feels.

How Megaways works: ways to win explained

Megaways is a mechanic created by Big Time Gaming, the Sydney studio founded in 2011 and now owned by Evolution, which licenses it to other studios. On each spin, every reel lands with a random height, usually between 2 and 7 symbols. The number of ways to win is simply the symbols on each reel multiplied together.

How the ways count changes from spin to spin
Symbols per reel (6 reels)CalculationWays to win
2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 22 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 264
3, 4, 5, 3, 6, 23 × 4 × 5 × 3 × 6 × 24,320
2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 72 × 3 × 4 × 5 × 6 × 75,040
7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 77 to the power of 6117,649

A win needs matching symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left, in any row. Your stake covers all the ways, so a £1 spin costs £1 whether the reels show 64 ways or 117,649. More ways don’t make a spin more valuable on average; the paytable is scaled so the RTP stays the same. Many Megaways games add cascading reels, where winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, and some add a horizontal reel above or below the main set. Monopoly Megaways, for example, is listed with between 64 and 117,649 ways.

How classic slots work: paylines and fixed reels

Classic slots descend from pub and arcade fruit machines. The reels always show the same number of positions, and wins pay along fixed paylines, the routes across the reels that the paytable recognises. Sizzling Hot Deluxe from Novomatic is a clear example: five reels, three rows and just 5 paylines, with a listed RTP of 95.66% and a top win of 5,000 times the stake.

Because there are fewer ways for symbols to line up, classic games pay out according to a simpler, more readable paytable. Many players like that they can see exactly what each symbol pays and which lines are live. Our guide to reading a slot paytable shows how to read one quickly.

Same theme, different engine: classic and Megaways versions compared

The fairest way to compare the two styles is to look at games that exist in both forms. The figures below come from published game data; your casino may run a different RTP version, so check the help screen.

Rainbow Riches (Barcrest)95.00%Medium20 paylines500× stake
Rainbow Riches Megaways (Barcrest)96%High324 to 117,649 ways12,500× stake

Fishin’ Frenzy Megaways (Blueprint Gaming)96.10%Medium-highUp to 15,625 waysNot listed in our data

Two patterns stand out. RTP barely moves between versions, and in the Rainbow Riches pair the Megaways version is actually listed higher. What changes is the shape of the returns: the Megaways versions are more volatile, with a far higher top win. For a 20p spin, the classic Rainbow Riches top win of 500× is £100, while the Megaways version’s 12,500× is £2,500. Both games keep the same share of stakes over the long run; they just distribute what they return differently.

Megaways vs classic slots: volatility and what it means for a budget

Volatility describes how unevenly a slot returns money. A low-volatility game pays small wins often; a high-volatility game goes longer without wins and saves more of its return for rare large ones. Starburst is a useful classic-style reference: listed at 96.09% RTP, low volatility and a 500× top win. Bonanza Megaways, the Big Time Gaming title that popularised the mechanic, is listed at 96.00% with high volatility.

Worked example: the same £50 on two styles

Say you bring £50 and play 20p spins, which is 250 spins if nothing is won back. At 96% RTP, the long-run average cost of staking £50 is £2, on either game. The difference is the range of outcomes. On a low-volatility classic game, many sessions will end somewhere near that average, because small wins keep topping up the balance. On a high-volatility Megaways game, more sessions will end with most or all of the £50 gone, and a few will end well ahead thanks to a rare feature. Neither result can be predicted, and the house edge applies in both.

If you want your budget to last, lower volatility usually helps; if you accept long dry spells for the chance of a larger feature, higher volatility fits. Our answer on whether high or low volatility is better goes through the trade-off, and the explainer on slot hit frequency covers how often wins land.

UK rules that apply to Megaways and classic slots

There is no separate rulebook for Megaways. Every online slot offered in Great Britain follows the same design and stake rules, set out in the Commission’s summary of the 2021 slot design changes (opens in a new tab) and its online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).

One more difference you may notice: slots at UK-licensed casinos don’t offer a feature buy, even though many Megaways games sold elsewhere include one. That reflects how games are supplied to Great Britain rather than a dated rule; our page on why you can’t buy a slot feature explains what is known. The £5 slot stake limit and the spin speed limit pages carry the full detail.

How to choose between a Megaways and a classic slot

  1. Set your session budget and time limit before opening any game.
  2. Open the game’s help screen and note the RTP version your casino runs.
  3. Check the volatility rating, if shown, and the maximum win multiplier.
  4. Count the cost: divide your budget by your stake to see how many spins it buys.
  5. Try the game in demo mode first, which needs age verification at UK casinos, to see how often wins land.
  6. Choose the style whose rhythm suits your budget, and stop when the budget or the time is used.

Our guide to checking a slot’s RTP shows where the figure sits in common game menus, and the demo play guide explains how free-to-play versions work after age verification.

Common myths about Megaways and classic slots

  • “More ways means better odds.” No: the paytable is scaled to the ways, and RTP is what decides the long-run return.
  • “Classic slots are fairer.” Both styles use certified random number generators and published RTPs at licensed casinos.
  • “A 117,649-way spin is due a win.” Each spin is independent; the reel heights and symbols are random every time.
  • “Bigger stakes unlock better odds.” RTP is the same at every stake unless the game’s rules say otherwise.
  • “Megaways always pays more.” The top win is higher, but the average return is in the same range as classic games.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Megaways and classic slots?

The main difference is how wins form. Classic slots have fixed reels and pay along a set number of paylines, often between 1 and 20. Megaways slots change how many symbols each reel shows on every spin, usually between 2 and 7, so the number of ways to win changes too, commonly up to 117,649. Megaways games also tend to be more volatile, with higher top wins, while classic games are simpler and steadier. Our Megaways slots page explains the mechanic in more detail.

Do Megaways slots pay better than classic slots?

Not on average. A slot’s long-run return is set by its RTP, and Megaways and classic games sit in a similar range. Rainbow Riches is listed at 95.00% and its Megaways version at 96%, while Fishin’ Frenzy is listed at 96.12% and its Megaways version at 96.10%. What Megaways changes is the spread of results: fewer small wins and a higher top prize. Check the help screen, because casinos can run different RTP versions. Our list of high RTP slots helps compare titles.

How many ways to win does a Megaways slot have?

It changes on every spin. Most Megaways games have six reels, each showing between 2 and 7 symbols, and the ways count is the number of symbols on each reel multiplied together. Six reels of two symbols give 64 ways; six reels of seven give 117,649. Some games go further with extra reels: White Rabbit Megaways is listed at up to 248,832 ways, and Buffalo King Megaways at up to 200,704. Your stake covers every way. The ways to win glossary entry explains the counting.

Are classic slots lower volatility than Megaways?

Often, but not always. Many classic titles are low or medium volatility: Starburst is listed as low and Sizzling Hot Deluxe as medium. Most Megaways games are listed as high, such as Bonanza Megaways and Extra Chilli Megaways, though some, like Twin Spin Megaways, are listed as medium. Check each game’s rating rather than assuming by style. Lower volatility usually means smaller, more frequent wins. The slot volatility guide explains how ratings are worked out.

Who invented Megaways?

Big Time Gaming, a studio founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2011, created the Megaways mechanic. It licenses Megaways to other studios, which is why you see versions from Blueprint Gaming, Relax Gaming and others. Evolution announced its deal to buy Big Time Gaming in April 2021, so the studio now sits alongside NetEnt, Red Tiger and Nolimit City in the same group. Bonanza and Extra Chilli are among its best-known Megaways titles. Our Big Time Gaming page covers the studio’s other mechanics.

Do UK stake limits apply to Megaways slots?

Yes. The online slot stake limits apply to every reel-based casino game played online, Megaways included. Players aged 25 and over have been limited to £5 a spin since 9 April 2025, and players aged 18 to 24 to £2 a spin since 21 May 2025. The limit covers the whole game cycle, so a single spin with cascades counts as one stake. Classic slots follow exactly the same caps. Our page on the £2 slot stake limit covers the younger age band.

Why can’t I buy the bonus on Megaways slots in the UK?

Slots at UK-licensed casinos don’t offer a feature buy, even where the same game sold in other markets includes one. No official Commission rule or date confirms a ban, so it is best described as the way game studios and casinos supply games to Great Britain. The only route into a Megaways bonus round in the UK is to trigger it during normal play, one manually started spin at a time. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains what is and isn’t documented.

Are cascades on Megaways slots allowed under UK speed rules?

Yes. Cascading reels happen within a single game cycle, and the UK rule requires at least 2.5 seconds from the start of one game cycle until the next can begin. A spin that cascades several times is still one game cycle, so the cascades simply play out before you can start the next spin. What is banned is speeding up results with turbo or slam-stop buttons, and autoplay, all since 31 October 2021, as set out in the Commission’s 2021 game design consultation response (opens in a new tab). The autoplay ban page covers those design rules.

Are classic slots better for free spins offers?

It depends on which games the offer allows, not on the style. Free spins usually come at a fixed value, such as 10p, on selected games chosen by the casino. On a lower-volatility classic game, small wins are more likely; on a high-volatility Megaways game, most spins return nothing and a few may return more. With no-wagering spins, like Coral’s and Ladbrokes’, any winnings are paid as cash either way. Our explainer on how free spins work covers values and expiry. 18+, terms apply.
