ELK Studios casino games are slots from a Stockholm studio founded in 2013 that holds a Gambling Commission licence (account 40844) and publishes 120+ titles. It is known for Wild Toro’s walking wild, the bird-led Pirots series and Avalanche grids that reshape after every win. Below: the mechanics, the published figures, the UK rules and how to find the games.
ELK Studios was founded in Stockholm in 2013 and holds Gambling Commission account 40844.
Its slots favour medium–high to high volatility and moving-grid mechanics: Avalanche, walking wilds and CollectR.
Pirots and Pirots 2 publish a 94% RTP, lower than Wild Toro’s 96.4%; always check the help screen.
ELK’s X-iter feature menu is not part of the games supplied to Great Britain.
The offers shown are general slot offers on selected games, not ELK promotions. 18+, terms apply.

ELK Studios at a glance: a Stockholm slot specialist
ELK Studios started in Stockholm in 2013 and has built its name on video slots, with reference listings counting more than 120 of them. Two companies hold its licences: ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd. In Great Britain the studio appears on the Gambling Commission register under account 40844, and in Malta it holds licence MGA/B2B/605/2018, issued on 27 February 2019.
Compared with many suppliers on our game providers hub, ELK releases fewer games and gives each one a lot of mechanical ambition. Grids grow, symbols move between spins and characters wander the reels collecting things. That design approach earns attention from players who like elaborate features, and it also tends to push volatility up.
Signature mechanics in ELK Studios casino games
Four ideas turn up again and again across the catalogue. Learning them once makes any new ELK game quicker to read.

Not part of games supplied to Great Britain
Avalanche is ELK’s version of what other studios call cascading reels. The important point is that only the first drop costs you a stake; every follow-on drop is part of the same game cycle. The walking wild in Wild Toro is a form of sticky wild that shifts rather than stays put, so a single wild can contribute to several spins in a row.
Why Pirots plays so differently
The Pirots games drop paylines altogether. Birds sit on the grid and fly to collect matching gems, the grid can expand from its starting size to 8x8, and features trigger as you collect. Because no line structure exists, the usual paytable logic of matching left to right does not apply; you read the help screen to see what each collection pays.

Two things stand out. First, the Nitropolis ways count can climb into the tens of millions because the grid and symbol sizes change; that number describes possibility, not likelihood. Second, the Pirots games publish a lower return than the older titles. Our guide to what makes a good RTP puts 94% and 96.4% in context.
What a 94% versus 96.4% RTP means in pounds
RTP is a long-run average. Imagine £200 staked in total, say 400 spins at 50p. Across the very long run, a 96.4% game like Wild Toro would return about £192.80 of that and keep about £7.20; a 94% game like Pirots would return about £188 and keep about £12. That gap is real, but it is dwarfed by short-term variation in a game rated medium–high or high volatility, where 400 spins could finish well up or deep down.
A max win such as 10,000x stake is a ceiling, not a target. At a 20p stake it would be £2,000, and the odds of reaching it are extremely small. Read more in our explainer on max win and our RTP explained guide.
Is ELK Studios licensed in the UK?
Yes. ELK appears on the Gambling Commission register under account 40844, which means it is authorised to supply gambling software to British operators. You can confirm the entry yourself by searching the Commission’s register of gambling businesses (opens in a new tab) for ELK or the account number.
Open the Gambling Commission’s register of gambling businesses.
Search for the account number 40844 or the company name.
Check that the licence status is shown as active.
Look at the activities listed to see what the licence covers.
Do the same for the casino you plan to use; its own account number should be in its website footer.
A supplier licence does not replace the casino’s licence: you need both. Our guide to reading a casino footer shows where operators must display theirs, and what UKGC licensed means explains the protections.
How ELK games differ in the UK version
ELK’s international releases include X-iter, a menu that lets players pay a multiple of the stake to enter features. That is a form of bonus buy, and slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos do not offer it. This reflects how games are supplied to Great Britain rather than a dated Commission rule; our page on bonus buy in the UK gives the context.
No turbo or slam-stop, so the Avalanche sequence plays at normal speed.
No celebration sounds or animations for a return equal to or below your stake.
Stake caps of £5 per spin at 25 and over, and £2 per spin at 18 to 24, explained on our £5 slot stake limit page.
Your net position and elapsed time stay on screen throughout.
Because Avalanche drops are part of one game cycle, a long chain does not break the 2.5-second rule; the timer runs from the start of one paid spin to the start of the next. The spin speed limit page explains how that is measured.
Who ELK Studios games suit
Advantages
Inventive mechanics that change how a slot reads
Published RTPs at or above 96% on several older titles
Clear, consistent feature names across the catalogue
Drawbacks
Medium–high to high volatility can mean long dry spells
Pirots titles publish a 94% RTP
Complex grids take a few minutes of reading before they make sense
If you prefer simple three-reel games, the classic fruit-machine style of Barcrest may suit you better. If you like ELK’s ambition, Relax Gaming and Yggdrasil are other Nordic-rooted studios with heavy mechanics.
Finding ELK Studios casino games at UK casinos
Our partner facts do not list which studios each casino carries, so search the site directly. Titles are easier to find than the studio name: type Pirots, Wild Toro or Nitropolis into the lobby search. If a provider filter exists, ELK is usually listed by name. You must be logged in and age-verified before demo versions open, a rule in place since May 2019.
Once a game is open, the info button shows the developer, the RTP for that version and the rules. Our guide to reading game help screens explains each part.
Setting limits before a high-volatility ELK session
Slots are a paid form of entertainment and the house edge means you should expect to lose over time. High-volatility games make that more obvious, because losing runs can be long. Decide your budget first; UK casinos have prompted you to set a financial limit before your first deposit since 31 October 2025. Our guide to setting a gambling budget has a simple method.
If you want a complete break from online gambling, GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) blocks you from all GB-licensed sites for six months to five years. The National Gambling Helpline is free and open around the clock on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions
What are ELK Studios casino games?
They are video slots made by ELK Studios, a Stockholm developer founded in 2013 that concentrates entirely on slots. Reference listings count more than 120 titles. The studio is known for mechanics that move: Avalanche grids that drop new symbols after each win, walking wilds in the Wild Toro series and the CollectR birds of Pirots. Volatility is usually medium–high or high. See our slot features explained guide for how these mechanics compare with other studios’ versions.
Is ELK Studios licensed by the Gambling Commission?
Yes, ELK Studios holds a Gambling Commission licence under account 40844. Its licensed entities are ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd, and it also has a Maltese licence, MGA/B2B/605/2018, issued on 27 February 2019. A supplier licence means the company may provide gambling software to British operators, but you still need to play at a casino with its own UK licence. Our guide on how to check a casino licence shows the steps for the operator side.
What is the RTP of Pirots?
Pirots and Pirots 2 both publish an RTP of 94% in our verified records, which is lower than several older ELK titles such as Wild Toro at 96.4%. Over a very long run a 94% game keeps about £6 of every £100 staked, against about £3.60 for a 96.4% game. Your own session can differ hugely from either figure. Check the help screen at your casino in case a different version is installed; how to check RTP explains where to look.
What does Avalanche mean in ELK slots?
Avalanche is ELK’s cascading-reels mechanic: winning symbols disappear and new ones fall into the gaps, so one paid spin can produce a chain of wins. Only the first drop costs a stake; the follow-on drops belong to the same game cycle. Several ELK games add multipliers or grid growth as the chain continues, and the help screen of each game lists exactly what builds up during a chain. Our cascading reels glossary entry covers how the mechanic works across studios.
Can I use X-iter in the UK?
No. X-iter is ELK’s paid menu for entering features directly, a form of bonus buy, and slots supplied to UK-licensed casinos do not offer it. You trigger features only through normal spins. This is how games are supplied to Great Britain rather than a dated Commission rule. If you see a feature-buy option on a site claiming to serve UK players, check the operator’s licence carefully. Our page on bonus buy in the UK explains the background.
Which ELK slot has the biggest max win?
In our verified records, Nitropolis, Pirots and Pirots 2 share the highest published max win of 10,000x stake. Cygnus lists 5,000x and Wild Toro 2,250x. A max win is the most a single game round can pay, and reaching it is extremely rare; at a 20p stake, 10,000x would be £2,000. A high ceiling usually goes with higher volatility, meaning more losing spins in between. Our explainer on slot max win sets out what the figure does and does not tell you.
Are ELK Studios slots high volatility?
Mostly yes: the ELK slots in our records are rated medium–high, and Pirots 2 is rated high. That means wins tend to be less frequent but larger when they arrive, so a session can see long runs without a meaningful return. Volatility does not change the RTP; it changes how bumpy the path is. If you prefer steadier play, keep stakes small or choose a lower-volatility studio. The question high or low volatility compares the two approaches.
Can I play ELK Studios demos without signing up?
Not at a UK-licensed casino. Since May 2019 free-to-play demo games have only been available after age verification, so you need an account that has passed the casino’s checks. Some studio or review sites outside the licensed casino environment may show videos, but playable demos at UK casinos sit behind login. Demo play uses the same maths as the real version, apart from the money. Our free demo games rule page explains why the change was made.
How fast do ELK slots spin in the UK?
Each paid spin must take at least 2.5 seconds from start to the start of the next, a rule in force since 31 October 2021, and turbo or slam-stop buttons are not allowed. Avalanche chains count as part of one game cycle, so a long cascade can run past 2.5 seconds without breaking the rule. Autoplay is also banned, so every paid spin needs a separate press. Our 2.5 second spin rule page explains how the timer is measured.
Is Wild Toro still worth knowing about?
Wild Toro, released in 2016, is the game that made ELK’s walking wild famous, and it remains one of its best-documented titles: 96.4% RTP, medium–high volatility, a 5x4 grid with 178 ways and a 2,250x max win in our records. Those figures make it a lower-ceiling, higher-return option compared with Pirots. No slot is a good or bad bet in itself; all carry a house edge. Our sticky wild glossary entry explains the family of wilds that walking wilds belong to.
