The free demo games age verification rule means a UK-licensed casino must confirm you are 18 or over before you can open a play-for-fun version of any slot or table game. It has applied since 7 May 2019, which is why demo buttons only appear once you have registered and passed the age check, even though no money is staked.
Since 7 May 2019, UK-licensed operators must age-verify you before you can play free-to-play versions of gambling games.
The Commission’s reason: there is no legitimate reason for children to access these games.
So demo modes appear only after you register and pass the same check used before a deposit.
Demos use a play-money balance: useful for learning rules and features, but no guide to future results.
Sites that offer gambling-style demos with no age check aren’t following the rules UK licensees must follow.

What the free demo games age verification rule says
Free-to-play games are versions of slots, roulette, blackjack and other casino games that run on pretend credits. You can spin, deal and bet, but you can’t win or lose money. Before May 2019, many UK casinos let anyone open them with a single click, no account needed.
That changed when the Gambling Commission’s new verification rules took effect on 7 May 2019. As set out in its announcement of new rules to make online gambling fairer and safer (opens in a new tab), customers must now be age-verified before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games. The same rule requires verification before any deposit or real-money play, explained on our casino age verification page.
The rule applies to businesses licensed by the Gambling Commission. If a site offers casino-style demos to anyone, with no age check at all, that tells you something about whose rules it is following.
Why demo games need an age check
Free play looks harmless because nothing is at stake. The Commission’s view, stated when it announced the rule, was that there is no legitimate reason for children to have access to these games. The then Culture Secretary, Jeremy Wright, said extending age checks to free-to-play games would help create a safer online environment for children.
The thinking behind it is straightforward. A demo slot has the same reels, sounds and bonus features as the real one. Letting children play it freely would familiarise them with gambling products years before they could legally use them, and would put adult gambling brands in front of under-18s. Linking demos to verified adult accounts closes that route and keeps the rules against appealing to under-18s consistent across free and paid play.
What the rule looks like in a casino lobby
You’ll notice the rule in three ways at any UK-licensed site:
Game tiles show only a “Play” button, or a prompt to log in, until you are signed in.
After registration and a passed age check, a “Demo”, “Play for fun” or similar option appears on many games.
Live dealer games rarely have a demo mode, since they run in real studios with real stakes.
How to open a demo at a UK casino
Register with your legal name, date of birth and address.
Pass the age and identity check; most are automatic, and some need a document upload.
Set a deposit limit at the prompt, or confirm you don’t want one. You don’t have to deposit to use demos.
Open the game from the lobby and choose the demo or play-for-fun option if the casino offers it.
Read the game’s help screen first: it shows rules, the paytable and the RTP figure the casino uses.
Not every game or casino offers demo modes; some brands provide none. Our demo play guide and casino lobby guide explain where to look.

What demo games are genuinely useful for
Used well, a demo is a free rulebook with moving parts. It is the best way to learn what a game does before money is involved.
Reading the slot paytable and seeing which symbols matter.
Getting a feel for volatility: how long gaps between wins can be. Our volatility guide explains the maths.
Practising table game decisions such as when to stand or split in blackjack, at your own pace.
Deciding a game isn’t for you without spending anything.
What demos can’t tell you
Every spin is decided by a random number generator, so a run of wins in a demo says nothing about what happens next, in demo or real play. A demo session of 200 spins is far too short to show a game’s long-run return; RTP is measured over millions of rounds.
Here is the maths with numbers. A slot with 96% RTP returns £96 for every £100 staked on average over the very long run. If a demo session of 200 spins at a pretend £1 shows you ending £150 up, that is just short-term variance. In real money, 200 spins at £1 means £200 staked with an expected cost of about £8, and the actual result could be well above or below that. Our RTP explained guide goes further.
Demos also can’t show you how you feel when real money is involved. If you find yourself wanting to win back losses, that is a sign to stop, whatever the game.

Who the demo age verification rule applies to
The rule binds every operator holding a Gambling Commission licence that offers free-to-play versions of its gambling games to customers in Great Britain. It forms part of the identity and age duties covered on our KYC checks page. The legal minimum age for casino gambling is 18, as our gambling age page explains.
If you are a parent, the rule helps at licensed sites, but children can still meet gambling-style content elsewhere online. Our help for family and friends guide includes practical steps.

If a site that appears to be UK-licensed lets you play demos without any account or age check, check its licence on the Commission’s register first; our guide on how to check a casino licence shows how. If it is licensed, you can raise the concern with the operator and with the Commission. The Commission’s age, ID and financial verification guide (opens in a new tab) explains the contact routes.

Frequently asked questions
Why can’t I play free slots without signing up?
Because since 7 May 2019, UK-licensed casinos must verify your age before you can access free-to-play versions of gambling games. The Gambling Commission said there is no legitimate reason for children to have access to them. So you register, pass the age and identity check, and then demos become available where the casino offers them. You don’t need to deposit. Our demo play guide explains how to find play-for-fun modes once you are verified.
Do I need to deposit to play demo games?
No. The rule requires age verification, not a deposit. Once your account is verified, which is usually automatic, you can open demo versions of games that offer them without adding money. You will still be prompted to set a deposit limit, because since 31 October 2025 that prompt appears before a first deposit, but you can do that without depositing. Our how to deposit guide covers the cashier when you are ready.
When did UK demo games start needing age verification?
On 7 May 2019. The Gambling Commission announced the change on 7 February 2019, alongside rules requiring verification before any deposit or gambling and ending the old 72-hour window for age checks. Before then, many casinos let anyone open free versions of slots without an account. Our 2020 to 2024 timeline records the changes that followed, including the 2021 slot design rules and the credit card ban.
Can you win real money on demo games?
No. Demo games use play credits with no cash value, so you can’t win or lose money and nothing can be withdrawn. That is also why demo results shouldn’t shape your expectations: short sessions swing widely, and real-money results are decided independently by the random number generator on every spin. If you want to understand a game’s long-run return, check its RTP. Our answer on how often slots pay out explains what that figure means.
Are demo games the same as the real-money versions?
They are designed to show the same game: reels, symbols, features and paytable. Whether every setting matches exactly is a matter for the game supplier and operator, so the help screen is the place to confirm the rules and RTP used. Real-money play also carries rules that don’t matter in a demo, such as the £5 or £2 maximum slot stake. Our game help screen guide shows what to look for.
Is it legal to play demo slots under 18?
UK-licensed casinos aren’t allowed to let you, because they must verify you are 18 or over before giving access to free-to-play versions of gambling games. That rule exists to keep gambling products away from children altogether. If you are under 18 and finding gambling-style games hard to stop, confidential help is available from GamCare on 0808 8020 133. Parents can read our gambling blocking software guide for tools that help at home.
Do demo games help you win at real slots?
They help you understand a game, not beat it. A demo teaches how features trigger and how volatile a slot feels, which helps you choose games that suit your budget. It can’t change the house edge or predict outcomes, because each spin is random and independent. Patterns spotted in a demo are coincidence. Our gambling myths guide covers the most common beliefs about slots and why they don’t hold up.
Why do some websites offer demo slots without an age check?
The age verification rule binds operators licensed by the Gambling Commission. A site letting anyone play casino-style demos without an account may not hold a British licence, or may not be a gambling operator at all. Either way, it isn’t following the rules a UK licensee must. If a site looks like a UK casino but skips age checks, verify its licence before going further. Our guide on how to spot a fake casino lists other warning signs.
Does the demo rule apply to live casino games?
The rule covers free-to-play versions of gambling games generally, but live dealer games rarely have a free mode in the first place, because they stream from real studios where every seat involves a real stake. To learn live blackjack or roulette, the usual route is a demo of the RNG version of the same game, then watching a live table before betting. Our live vs RNG casino games comparison explains how they differ.
Will playing demos affect my account or credit file?
Playing demos doesn’t involve money, so it creates no transactions. The age and identity check that unlocks them is the same one run at sign-up, which matches your details against databases rather than applying for credit. Casinos may record game activity under their privacy policies, as they do for all customers. If you want to know what they hold, you can ask. Our online casino data privacy guide explains your rights.
