Casino age verification in the UK

Casino age verification in the UK has to happen before you can deposit, gamble or even open a free demo game. Since 7 May 2019, every Gambling Commission licensee must confirm at least your name, address and date of birth first, replacing the old 72-hour grace period. In most cases an automatic database check does it in moments; otherwise you upload a document.

Key takeaways

  • Since 7 May 2019, age and identity must be verified before you deposit, gamble, use a bonus or play free-to-play demos.
  • Minimum details checked: name, address and date of birth, usually through credit reference and electoral roll databases.
  • The old 72-hour window, when unverified players could gamble, is gone.
  • A casino shouldn’t demand ID at withdrawal if it could have asked earlier, except for legal duties such as anti-money laundering.
  • The legal age for online casino play in Great Britain is 18.

What the casino age verification rule says

Every online casino licensed by the Gambling Commission must confirm that you are 18 or over, and that you are who you say you are, before you can do anything involving gambling. The Commission’s age, ID and financial verification guide (opens in a new tab) puts it plainly: all online gambling businesses must ask you to prove your age and identity before you gamble.

The check has to be complete before any of the following:

  • Depositing money into your account.
  • Gambling with your own money.
  • Gambling with a free bet, bonus spins or any other bonus.
  • Opening free-to-play demo versions of casino games, covered on our free demo games rule page.

At minimum, operators verify your name, address and date of birth. Verification also lets the site check whether you have self-excluded, both on its own records and against GAMSTOP.

What changed in May 2019

The Commission announced the rules on 7 February 2019 in its article on new rules to make online gambling fairer and safer (opens in a new tab), and they took effect on 7 May 2019.

Online casino age checks before and after 7 May 2019

The change closed a real gap. Under the 72-hour rule, a child could open an account and gamble before anyone checked their age; the operator then had to return stakes once it found out.

How UK casino age verification works in practice

Most checks are invisible. When you register, the casino sends your details to a verification service that matches them against databases such as credit reference agency records and the electoral roll. If everything matches, you are verified within moments.

  1. Enter your full legal name, date of birth and home address exactly as they appear on official records.
  2. The casino runs an electronic check against credit reference and electoral roll data.
  3. If it matches, your account is verified and you can set a deposit limit and deposit.
  4. If it doesn’t match, you’re asked for documents, such as a passport or driving licence for age and identity and a recent bill or bank statement for address.
  5. Upload them through the secure document area; the casino reviews them before you can deposit or play.
  6. If fraud is suspected, the casino may also ask for a selfie to confirm the person matches the ID.

The Commission doesn’t prescribe exact documents, so lists vary. Our guides to casino verification documents and proof of address cover what is commonly accepted, and how long verification takes explains typical delays.

Age verification and withdrawals

Before 2019, many players only discovered the casino needed ID when they tried to withdraw. The Commission found that in March 2018 about 15% of complaints to its contact centre involved customers blocked from withdrawing until they sent certain ID. The 2019 rules tackled this directly: an operator cannot make ID a condition of withdrawing if it could have asked for it earlier.

There is one important exception. If the casino needs information at the point of withdrawal to meet a legal duty, such as anti-money laundering checks, it can still ask. That is why some players with large wins are asked about source of funds. The Commission says delaying a withdrawal over insufficient ID may breach its licence conditions.

Related rules mean a casino can’t confiscate your money because you didn’t verify within a time limit. Our guide on how to withdraw casino winnings covers the full process.

Why the age check moved before play

Protecting children was the headline reason. Announcing the rules, the Commission’s chief executive Neil McArthur said the changes would protect children and the vulnerable from gambling-related harm, and help consumers collect winnings without unnecessary delay. The then Culture Secretary, Jeremy Wright, said operators must now check someone’s age before they gamble, and not after.

Verification before play also strengthens self-exclusion. A self-excluded person can be matched against the operator’s own records and GAMSTOP’s verified data at sign-up, rather than after they have already been gambling. Our GAMSTOP requirement page explains how that link works.

Who the age verification rules cover

The requirement applies to every online gambling business licensed by the Commission for customers in Great Britain: casinos, bingo and betting sites alike. It is part of the KYC checks every licensee must run.

Land-based venues have their own rules. From 30 August 2024, premises adopted a “Think 25” approach to checking age. The legal gambling age in the UK is 18 for casino gambling.

Sites without a British licence don’t follow these rules, and some deliberately avoid verification. That is a warning sign rather than a convenience; our red flags guide lists others.

What age verification does not do

  • It doesn’t stop an adult lending their verified account to someone else. Letting another person use your account or card breaks casino terms; see using someone else’s card.
  • It isn’t a financial check; spending-related checks are covered on our affordability checks page.
  • It isn’t a credit application; the operator is matching identity details, not assessing borrowing.
  • It doesn’t replace parental controls on shared devices at home.

If you share a phone or computer with children, log out of gambling apps, avoid saved passwords, and consider blocking software. Our gambling blocking software guide covers the main tools.

If verification goes wrong

If a casino keeps rejecting valid documents, or asks for ID at withdrawal that it could have requested at sign-up, ask in writing which rule it is relying on. If you aren’t satisfied, use its complaints procedure and then an approved ADR provider. Our guide on how to complain about a casino explains each step, and the casino verification explainer covers the reasons behind document requests.

Frequently asked questions

Why do online casinos need to verify my age?

Because the law in Great Britain sets 18 as the minimum age for casino gambling, and since 7 May 2019 Gambling Commission rules require online operators to confirm your age and identity before you deposit, gamble or play free demo games. Verification also lets them check you haven’t self-excluded. An operator that let a child gamble would breach its licence. Our page on the legal gambling age in the UK explains the age rules for different products.

How long does casino age verification take?

Usually seconds. Most UK casinos run an automatic check against credit reference and electoral roll data when you register, and if your details match you are verified straight away. If they don’t match, you’ll be asked to upload documents, which can take from a few minutes to longer depending on the operator’s review queue. No official deadline exists, but you can’t deposit until it is done. See how long casino verification takes for common delays.

Can I play at a UK casino without ID?

Often you won’t need to upload ID, because an electronic check confirms your name, address and date of birth. But you can’t play without being verified. If the database check fails, the casino will ask for documents, such as a passport or driving licence and proof of address. Unlicensed sites that skip verification aren’t a workaround: they offer none of the protections UK rules give you. Read can I open a casino account without ID for more.

What documents do casinos accept for age verification?

The Gambling Commission doesn’t prescribe a list, but common examples are a passport or photocard driving licence for age and identity, and a recent utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement for address. Requirements vary by operator, so check its help centre before uploading. Send clear, uncropped images through the secure upload area. Our casino verification documents guide lists what is typically accepted and how to avoid rejections.

Do I need to verify my age to play free demo games?

Yes. Since 7 May 2019, UK-licensed operators must age-verify customers before they can access free-to-play versions of gambling games. The Commission said there was no legitimate reason for children to have access to them. In practice, that means you register and pass verification before demos open, even though no money is involved. The free demo games age verification rule is explained in more depth on its own page.

Can a casino ask for ID when I withdraw?

Only in limited circumstances. Since May 2019, operators can’t make ID a condition of withdrawing if they could have asked for it earlier. They can still request information at withdrawal when a legal duty requires it, most commonly anti-money laundering checks on large sums. The Commission has said delaying withdrawals over insufficient ID may breach licence conditions. If you think a request is unjustified, read why was my withdrawal declined and then complain in writing.

Does casino age verification affect my credit score?

An identity check matches your details against data sources such as credit reference agency records and the electoral roll; it isn’t an application for credit. The rules don’t treat it as a credit search, and operators are checking who you are rather than assessing borrowing. If you want to see what is recorded about you, you can request your own credit report. Our page on online casino data privacy explains what operators hold and your rights to see it.

What happens if an under-18 tries to sign up?

The age check should stop them before any deposit or play, because verification must be completed first. If the details don’t match an adult on the databases and no valid ID is supplied, the account can’t be used. Under the old 72-hour rule, operators had to return stakes after finding an underage gambler; the current rule aims to prevent the gambling in the first place. Parents can add extra protection with blocking tools; see our help for family and friends guide.

Why might a casino ask for a selfie?

The Commission says operators may request a selfie if they suspect fraud, such as identity theft where someone else is using your details. It confirms the person using the account matches the ID provided. As with other documents, it shouldn’t be requested at withdrawal if it could have been asked for sooner, unless a legal requirement applies. Use the casino’s secure upload area rather than email. Our account security guide covers protecting your login.

Do the age rules apply in Northern Ireland?

The Gambling Commission’s verification rules cover licensees serving customers in Great Britain, and Northern Ireland has its own gambling law. Some UK-licensed brands accept Northern Ireland customers under their own terms, while some offers exclude Northern Ireland altogether. Check each site’s terms before signing up, and expect to be asked for the same name, address and date of birth details wherever you play. The Northern Ireland gambling law page explains how the law differs there.
