Deposit limit rules for UK casinos

Deposit limit rules at UK casinos changed on 31 October 2025: every licensed operator must now prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, with setting one as the default. Since 30 September 2026, operators must also offer a true gross deposit limit, and only that kind of limit may be called a “deposit limit”.

Key takeaways

  • Since 31 October 2025 you are asked to set a financial limit before your first deposit, and opting out must be confirmed.
  • Only a gross limit on what you pay in may be called a “deposit limit”; operators had to offer one by 30 September 2026.
  • Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one needs at least 24 hours’ cooling-off and your confirmation afterwards.
  • Limits must be available for 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month, typed in freely with no pre-filled suggestions.
  • A limit at one casino does not apply at another; GAMSTOP and bank blocks work across sites.

Deposit limit rules for UK casinos at a glance

A deposit limit is a ceiling you choose on how much money you can pay into a casino account over a set period. In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission does not set the amount for you. It sets the rules for how operators must offer, apply and change the limits you pick. Those rules live in two places: the Commission’s licence conditions and codes of practice and its Remote Technical Standards, specifically RTS 12 on financial limits.

Two waves of change have reshaped them. From 31 October 2025, operators had to prompt new customers to set a limit before their first deposit and make limits easier to find. Then, by 30 September 2026 (a deadline extended from 30 June 2026), they had to offer a genuine gross deposit limit and stop using that name for anything else. As of 20 October 2026, both sets of changes are in force.

The limit prompt before your first deposit

Open a new account at a UK-licensed casino today and, before any money goes in, you should see a screen asking you to set a financial limit. The Commission’s rules, explained in its blog on changes to customer-led financial limits (opens in a new tab), require that:

  • Setting a limit is the default choice, not an optional extra.
  • If you decide not to set one, you must actively confirm that.
  • You type the amount yourself; pre-filled or greyed-out suggested amounts are not allowed.
  • Limits apply at account level, across everything you play with that operator.
  • A clearly visible link to limit settings sits on the homepage and the deposit pages, reachable in as few clicks as possible.

Operators may set a minimum amount for a limit, for example for payment processing reasons, and may require whole pounds to reduce typing mistakes. They may not use those rules to nudge you towards a particular figure.

Gross vs net: what counts as a deposit limit now

Before these rules, some sites offered “deposit limits” that actually subtracted your withdrawals, which could let you pay in far more than the figure you set. RTS 12 now defines a deposit limit as a gross limit: it caps what you deposit over the period, full stop. Net limits can still exist alongside it, but they must be called something else.

A £100 weekly limit: gross deposit limit compared with a net limit
Week’s activityGross deposit limit (£100)Net limit (£100)
Deposit £100 on MondayAllowed; limit reachedAllowed; limit reached
Withdraw £60 on TuesdayNo change: still £0 left to depositHeadroom back up to £60
Try to deposit £60 on WednesdayBlocked until the period resetsAllowed
Total paid in that week£100£160

The difference grows with every withdrawal. A gross limit tells you exactly how much new money can go in; a net limit tells you how much you can be down. Both have uses, which is why our safer gambling tools comparison sets them side by side with a loss limit.

Gross deposit limits must use a fixed time frame, and the operator must tell you clearly when the period resets. A rolling window that restarts whenever you return after a break is not allowed for customer-set limits.

Raising and lowering a limit: the cooling-off rule

RTS 12 treats the two directions very differently, on purpose. Lowering a limit is a protective decision, so it happens straight away unless a technical failure prevents it, in which case you should be told when it will apply. Raising a limit is the risky direction, so it only happens at your request, after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, and only once you take positive action at the end of that period to confirm it.

Worked example: moving from £50 to £200 a week

  1. Monday 8pm: you ask to raise your weekly deposit limit from £50 to £200. The £50 limit stays in force.
  2. Tuesday 8pm: the 24-hour minimum has passed. Nothing changes automatically.
  3. Wednesday morning: you log in and the site asks you to confirm the new £200 limit. Only after you confirm does it apply.
  4. If you decide against it, you simply do not confirm, and the £50 limit carries on.

Some operators use longer waits than 24 hours; the rule sets a minimum, not a maximum. Our answers on whether you can change a deposit limit and why increases take time go into the practical details.

Limit periods and review reminders UK casinos must give

Every UK operator must offer limits covering at least these periods, and it must send review prompts on a set schedule.

RTS 12 periods and review prompts
RequirementDetail
Limit periods on offerAt least 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month
Customers with limitsPrompted to review account and transaction information at least every 6 months
Active customers without limitsPrompted to consider one at least every 12 months
First round of promptsCustomers with limits: between 31 October 2025 and 30 April 2026; all active customers without limits: by October 2026
Dormant accountsA prompt at your next log-in is acceptable

You can ask for more frequent reminders. These sit alongside reality checks, which remind you how long you have been playing during a session.

How to set a deposit limit at a UK casino

  1. Log in and look for the limits link on the homepage or deposit page, which the rules say must be clearly visible.
  2. Choose “deposit limit” (the gross type) rather than a net or loss limit, unless you want both.
  3. Pick the period: daily, weekly or monthly.
  4. Type an amount you would be comfortable losing in full, based on your gambling budget.
  5. Save it and note the date and time the period resets.
  6. Set a calendar reminder to review it; lower it immediately if it ever feels too high.

Our separate step-by-step guide to setting deposit limits shows the extra options, such as session time limits.

Who the deposit limit rules apply to

The rules bind every business holding a Gambling Commission remote licence when it serves customers in Great Britain: casino, betting and bingo sites alike. They also apply to existing customers, though you are not moved automatically. If you already have a net or loss limit, you can keep it while the operator still offers it, and switch to a gross deposit limit whenever you wish.

They do not reach unlicensed offshore sites, which ignore British rules altogether, and Northern Ireland is outside the Gambling Act 2005. Our page on Northern Ireland gambling law explains that gap.

What a deposit limit does not do

  • It does not cap the amount you stake: winnings already in your balance can still be played.
  • It works at one operator only. A limit at one site has no effect at another, so it is not a substitute for self-exclusion.
  • It is not the same as the operator’s own maximum deposit per transaction, which is a business setting.
  • It does not remove the operator’s duty to interact with you if your play shows signs of harm; see customer interaction rules.

For a block across every UK-licensed site, GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) is free, and many banks offer gambling payment blocks on debit cards.

Why the Commission changed the deposit limit rules

Announcing the changes on 7 October 2025, the Commission said in its news article on the new deposit limit rules (opens in a new tab) that its aim was to give consumers greater awareness and control over their gambling. Two problems sat behind that: limits were often hard to find, and the term “deposit limit” meant different things on different sites. Making the limit screen the default, and fixing what the name means, tackles both.

If a limit was not applied, and where to get help

If an operator let you deposit beyond a limit you set, or delayed a reduction without good reason, raise a complaint with it in writing, then take it to an approved ADR body if needed. Our guide on how to complain about a casino covers the steps.

If you are finding it hard to stick to limits, that is worth acting on. The National Gambling Helpline, run by GamCare (opens in a new tab), is free on 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day. Frequently asked questions

Do UK casinos have to offer deposit limits?

Yes. Every operator licensed by the Gambling Commission must let you set financial limits, and since 30 September 2026 it must offer a gross deposit limit that caps the total you pay in over a period. Limits must cover at least 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month, and you type the amount yourself. Since 31 October 2025, new customers are prompted to set one before their first deposit. Our how to set deposit limits guide walks through the screens you will see.

How long does it take to increase a deposit limit?

At least 24 hours, plus a confirmation from you. Under RTS 12, an increase can only be made at your request, after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, and only once you take positive action at the end of that period to confirm it. Until then, your old limit stays in place. Some operators wait longer than the minimum. If you do not confirm, the increase never happens. See why increases take time for the reasoning behind this.

Does lowering a deposit limit take effect straight away?

Yes. The rules say customer-led reductions must be applied immediately unless a system or technical failure prevents it, and in that case the operator should tell you when the new limit will start. There is no cooling-off period for lowering a limit because it is the protective direction. If a site makes you wait to reduce a limit, that is worth raising with its support team and, if needed, through a formal complaint. Our cooling-off period glossary entry explains the asymmetry.

What is the difference between a gross and a net deposit limit?

A gross deposit limit counts every pound you pay in, regardless of withdrawals; a net limit subtracts withdrawals. With a £100 weekly gross limit, depositing £100 and withdrawing £60 still leaves no room to deposit again that week. With a £100 net limit, you could deposit another £60. Since 30 September 2026, only the gross type may be called a deposit limit at UK casinos. Our loss limit glossary entry covers another common type.

Can I skip setting a limit when I open an account?

You can, but you have to confirm that choice. Since 31 October 2025, setting a financial limit is the default when you join a UK-licensed site, and opting out must be an active decision rather than a box you simply ignore. If you skip it, the operator must prompt you to consider a limit at least once every 12 months while you are an active customer. You can add one later at any time. Our gambling budget guide helps you choose an amount.

Does a deposit limit at one casino apply at others?

No. Limits are set per operator account, so a £50 weekly limit at one site has no effect elsewhere. If you want a restriction that covers every UK-licensed gambling site, GAMSTOP self-exclusion does that for a period you choose, from 6 months to 5 years. Many banks also let you block gambling payments on your debit card. Our pages on self-exclusion rules and bank gambling blocks explain how each one works and how long they last.

Can a casino suggest an amount for my deposit limit?

Not with a pre-filled figure. The Commission’s rules require limits to be entered as free text, and pre-filled or greyed-out suggested amounts are not allowed. Operators may set a practical minimum, for example because of payment processing costs, and may require whole-pound amounts to avoid typing errors, but they cannot use those rules to steer you towards a figure. The amount should come from your own budget. Our safer gambling tools comparison suggests ways to work it out.

When does my deposit limit reset?

It depends on the operator, but it must tell you clearly. Gross deposit limits must run on a fixed time frame: either a global reset day and time for all customers, or a reset tied to when you set the limit. A rolling window that restarts whenever you come back after a break is not allowed for customer-set limits. Check the limits page for your reset time and note it down. Our reality checks guide covers the session-time tools that sit alongside limits.

Do deposit limit rules apply to existing customers?

Yes, but nobody is switched over automatically. If you already had a net or loss limit, you can keep it while the operator still offers that type, and change to a gross deposit limit whenever you like. Existing customers also receive the review prompts: every 6 months if you have a limit, at least every 12 months if you do not. Prompts can arrive when you next log in. For more on the wider changes, see our latest safer gambling changes.

What if a casino let me deposit over my limit?

Raise it with the operator straight away, in writing, giving the dates, amounts and the limit you had set. If the reply does not resolve it, ask for a final response and then take the complaint to the approved ADR provider the operator names. Keep screenshots of your limit settings and transaction history. Our guide on how to complain about a casino explains each stage, and the complaints and ADR rules page covers what an ADR body can decide.
