Online blackjack in the UK is the card game of beating the dealer's hand without going over 21, played at a Gambling Commission-licensed casino either against software (RNG) or a live dealer on video. With good rules and correct decisions the house edge is around 0.5%, but the exact figure depends on the table you choose.
Online blackjack UK tables come in two forms: RNG games run by software and live dealer tables streamed from a studio.
Rules decide the edge: a 6:5 blackjack payout costs you about 1.4% more than the standard 3:2.
Since 17 January 2025, RNG blackjack has a minimum 5-second game cycle and no autoplay; slot stake limits do not apply.
Expected loss is the edge multiplied by your total stakes, so at £10 a hand and 50 hands an hour, a 0.5% edge costs about £2.50 an hour on average.

What online blackjack in the UK involves
Blackjack is a banking card game: you play against the house, not against other players. You and the dealer each get cards, number cards count at face value, picture cards count 10 and an ace counts 1 or 11. You win by finishing closer to 21 than the dealer or by the dealer going bust. A two-card 21, called a natural or blackjack, usually pays 3 to 2.
Online, you meet the game in two formats. RNG blackjack deals cards with a random number generator that has been tested before the game can be offered in Great Britain. Live blackjack streams a real dealer and a real shoe from a studio, and you make decisions on screen. Both formats sit in the table games or live casino section of a UK lobby, and both are covered by Gambling Commission rules when the casino holds a British licence.
This guide is the practical overview: what the formats are, how the rules at a particular table move the odds, which UK rules apply, and what a session costs in pounds. If you need the hand-by-hand rules first, start with our page on blackjack rules; for the decisions themselves, see blackjack basic strategy.
RNG vs live dealer blackjack online
The two formats play the same core game but feel quite different, and the difference matters for speed, stakes and how many decks you face.

How to play blackjack online, from login to payout
Log in to a UKGC-licensed casino and, if prompted, set a deposit limit. Since 31 October 2025, casinos must ask before your first deposit.
Open the table games or live casino lobby and filter for blackjack.
Open the game information to check the rules: decks, 3:2 or 6:5 payout, whether the dealer stands on soft 17, doubling, splitting and surrender.
Check the table limits and choose a stake that fits your session budget.
Place your chip in the betting circle. Add side bets only if you have decided to, knowing they carry a higher edge.
Act on your hand with the on-screen buttons: Hit, Stand, Double, Split and, where offered, Surrender.
The dealer completes their hand under the table rules, and wins are paid to your balance at once.
Online blackjack rules that change the odds
Every table publishes its own rule set. The figures below are approximate effects on the house edge compared with a typical six-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, with correct basic strategy. They come from long-established blackjack calculations, and exact values shift a little with the deck count.

The 6:5 payout is the single largest trap. On a £10 bet, a blackjack pays £15 at 3:2 but only £12 at 6:5. You get a blackjack roughly once every 21 hands, so the gap quietly adds up. The free calculators and rule tables published by Wizard of Odds on blackjack (opens in a new tab) are a useful cross-check if you want to price a specific rule set.
Online blackjack house edge and RTP
The house edge on blackjack is not one fixed number. It is the average cost of the game when you play every hand correctly under that table's rules. With 3:2 payouts, six or eight decks and the dealer standing on soft 17, it is typically around 0.4% to 0.6%. The game's RTP is simply 100% minus that figure, so around 99.4% to 99.6%.
Two things widen the gap. Rule sets with 6:5 payouts or a dealer who hits soft 17 add cost, and so does playing by hunch. Players who stand on 12 against a dealer 2 or never double tend to give the house several times the theoretical edge. Side bets add more again, often 3% to 7% or higher. For the detailed answer on edge by rule set, see what is the house edge on blackjack.
Variants differ, so always read the game's own help screen for the live RTP figure. For example, Wizard of Odds calculates the house edge on Evolution's Infinite Blackjack at about 0.45%, while the game's help file quotes 0.49%.

Blackjack at a UK-licensed casino follows Gambling Commission rules that changed noticeably in 2025. These are the ones that touch the game directly.
Minimum 5-second game cycle for non-slot RNG casino games, including blackjack, since 17 January 2025. The time runs from the start of one round to the start of the next.
No autoplay. Each round must be started by you; the ban covering slots since 31 October 2021 was extended to all online casino games on 17 January 2025.
Net position and session time shown on screen, extended from slots to other casino games in 2025.
No multi-game play of the kind banned for slots in 2021; the restriction was extended to casino products in 2025.
No slot-style stake cap. The £5 and £2 per spin limits apply to online slots only, so blackjack stakes are set by table limits and your own limits.
Age verification before play, including demo modes, since May 2019.
What online blackjack costs per hour: bankroll maths
Because blackjack has a low edge, it is easy to underestimate its cost. The useful sum is total stakes multiplied by the edge. The examples below assume £10 a hand and 50 hands an hour, an illustrative pace rather than a measured one.

Averages hide the swings. Blackjack has a fairly high variance for a low-edge game because doubles and splits put extra money on the table. A session budget of 20 to 40 base bets lets you absorb normal swings without topping up, and the right moment to stop is when that budget is gone. The bankroll entry and our gambling budget guide go further.
Online blackjack myths and betting systems
Card counting works online
RNG blackjack usually reshuffles for every round, so there is nothing to count. Live tables use deep shoes and cut cards well before the end. The card counting online page explains why the edge it offers is tiny or zero in practice.
Taking insurance protects a good hand
Insurance is a separate bet that the dealer has blackjack, paying 2 to 1. With six or eight decks it carries an edge of roughly 7% for a player who isn't counting, whatever your own hand is.
Doubling your stake after a loss evens things out
Progressive staking moves money around but leaves the edge untouched. The Martingale system page shows the pound figures on roulette, and the same arithmetic applies at the blackjack table.
How to choose a good online blackjack table in the UK
All five of our partner casinos hold Gambling Commission licences. We don't list specific blackjack titles for each, because lobbies change; check the live casino and table games sections, such as the Casumo live casino page, and the game help screens. You can also browse every game type from the games hub.

Frequently asked questions
Is online blackjack legal in the UK?
Yes. Adults aged 18 and over in Great Britain can legally play online blackjack at casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. The casino must check your age and identity before you deposit or play, including demo games. Northern Ireland sits outside the Gambling Act 2005, so some offers exclude it. To confirm a site is licensed, search its name on the Commission's register, as shown in our guide to checking a casino licence. Is online gambling legal in the UK has the legal background.
Is online blackjack rigged?
Not at a UK-licensed casino. RNG blackjack software must be tested by an approved lab before it can be offered in Great Britain, and live games are dealt from real shoes in licensed studios. That does not mean you will win: the house edge is built into the rules, so losses are the expected result over time. Our explainers are online casinos rigged and how casino games are tested explain the testing process and what the edge means.
What is the house edge on online blackjack?
With 3:2 blackjack payouts, the dealer standing on soft 17, six or eight decks and perfect basic strategy, the edge is usually around 0.4% to 0.6%. A 6:5 payout adds about 1.4 percentage points, and a dealer hitting soft 17 adds about 0.2. Playing by feel rather than strategy can multiply the cost several times over. Each game shows its own figure in the help screen. For a breakdown, see what is the house edge on blackjack and our house edge explainer.
Is live blackjack better than RNG blackjack?
Neither is better on fairness; they suit different players. Live blackjack is slower, more social and uses a physical shoe, but minimum stakes are usually higher. RNG blackjack is quicker, often has lower stakes and sometimes a demo mode after age verification. The rules, not the format, decide the house edge, so compare the help screens of the two tables you are considering. Our live vs RNG casino games comparison and the live casino UK guide explain both formats.
Can I play online blackjack for free in the UK?
Often, but only after age verification. Since May 2019 UK-licensed casinos must verify that you are 18 or over before you can access free-to-play versions of gambling games. Demo blackjack is mostly offered on RNG tables, not live ones. It is a reasonable way to learn the buttons and practise basic strategy without spending money, though demo results tell you nothing about future real-money hands. See free to play casino games and the demo games age verification rule.
How fast is online blackjack in the UK?
RNG blackjack at a UK-licensed casino must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, measured from the start of one round to the start of the next. That rule has applied to non-slot casino games since 17 January 2025. Live tables usually run more slowly because of the betting window and the dealer's actions. Faster play means more money staked per hour, which raises your expected cost, so pace matters. Our page on table game speed rules explains the rule and game design rules list related changes.
Is there a maximum stake on online blackjack in the UK?
There is no legal per-hand cap on blackjack like the £5 slot limit. The £5 and £2 stake limits introduced in 2025 apply only to online slots. Instead, each blackjack table sets its own minimum and maximum, shown in the lobby or game information, and you can add personal deposit limits. If a bonus is active, its terms may set a maximum bet too, such as Casumo's £5. The £5 slot stake limit page explains what is and is not covered, and deposit limit rules cover your own limits.
Can I use a casino bonus on blackjack?
Sometimes, but check the terms first. Many UK bonuses exclude blackjack or count it at a low percentage towards wagering because its edge is small. Since 19 January 2026 wagering is capped at 10x the bonus, which helps, but a 10% contribution would still mean ten times more blackjack play to clear the same requirement. None of our partners currently offers a blackjack-specific bonus. The blackjack bonus page explains what to look for, and the game weighting guide shows the maths.
Do I pay tax on blackjack winnings in the UK?
No. Gambling winnings are not taxed for players in the UK, whether they come from blackjack, slots or any other casino game. The tax burden sits with the operator instead: remote gaming duty on casino profits rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. You do not need to declare winnings as income, though large sums can raise source of funds questions from your bank or the casino. Do you pay tax on gambling winnings and the page on remote gaming duty cover both sides.
What is the best online blackjack strategy?
Basic strategy is the best approach: a fixed set of decisions for every player total against every dealer upcard, worked out by computer simulation. Following it brings the edge down to roughly half a percent at a good table. It does not make the game profitable, and staking systems or hunches cannot improve on it. Use a chart that matches the table's rules, especially soft 17 and surrender. Our blackjack basic strategy page has the charts, and betting systems explained shows why staking patterns don't help.
