Inside bets meaning: roulette wagers placed on the numbered grid itself, backing between one and six specific numbers rather than a broad group. They range from a straight-up bet on a single number at 35:1 to a six line on six numbers at 5:1. Payouts are higher than outside bets because wins are rarer, yet the house edge on a single-zero wheel is the same 2.70%.
Inside bets cover 1 to 6 numbers placed on the grid and pay from 5:1 to 35:1.
Every standard inside payout follows one rule: 36 divided by the numbers covered, minus 1.
On a single-zero wheel the edge is about 2.70% on all of them; American top line is worse.
Expect long gaps between wins; a single number misses all 10 of 10 spins about 76% of the time.

Inside bets meaning: chips on the numbered grid
The roulette layout has a central grid holding 0 and the numbers 1 to 36. Anything placed inside that grid, on a number, on a line between numbers or on a crossing point, is an inside bet. The term exists to distinguish these targeted wagers from outside bets, which sit in the boxes around the edge and cover 12 or 18 numbers at a time.
Where your chip sits decides which numbers it covers. Dead centre of a box covers one number. On a line between two boxes, two numbers. On the outer edge of a row, three. On a cross, four. On the outer edge where two rows meet, six. The game highlights the covered numbers when you hover or tap, which is the easiest way to confirm.
Every inside bet, with payouts and odds
Inside bets on a single-zero wheel (American top line shown for comparison)
You do not need to memorise the payout list. Take 36, divide by the number of numbers your chip covers, then subtract 1. One number: 36 ÷ 1 − 1 = 35. Two: 18 − 1 = 17. Three: 12 − 1 = 11. Four: 9 − 1 = 8. Six: 6 − 1 = 5. The rule prices every bet as if the wheel had 36 pockets. The zero pocket is the 37th, and that is the casino’s margin.
The American top line breaks the pattern. Five numbers would need a payout of 6.2:1 to match the others, but it pays 6:1, which is why its edge is so much higher. Our American roulette guide explains how to spot it.
How often inside bets win over 10 spins
Higher payouts come with longer gaps. This table shows the chance of at least one win, and of none, over 10 spins on a single-zero wheel.

Compare that with an 18-number outside bet, which misses all 10 spins only about 0.1% of the time. This is the practical meaning of volatility at the roulette table.
Inside bets in pounds: a worked example
Say you spread £10 across inside bets each spin: £2 straight up on 17, £2 on the 17/20 split, £2 on the 13-14-15 street, £2 on the corner 17-18-20-21 and £2 on the six line 31 to 36. If 17 lands, three of those chips win: £70 + £34 + £16 = £120 profit on the winners, minus the £4 lost on the street and six line, so you finish £116 up for the spin. If 32 lands, only the six line wins: £10 profit on it minus £8 lost elsewhere, a net gain of £2. Most other numbers lose the full £10.
However the chips are arranged, each one still carries the 2.70% edge, so the expected cost is about 27p per £10 spin. Our bankroll basics guide shows how to set a stake that survives long gaps.
How to place inside bets online
Check the table’s inside-bet limits, often listed per number in the info panel.
Pick a chip and tap the exact spot: centre, line, row edge or cross.
Confirm the highlighted numbers match what you intended.
Use the racetrack, if offered, for call bets such as neighbours or tiers, which are bundles of inside bets.
Review the total stake before confirming; inside bets add up quickly.

Frequently asked questions
What are inside bets in roulette?
Inside bets are roulette wagers placed on the numbered grid, backing between one and six specific numbers. They include straight up (one number, 35:1), split (two, 17:1), street (three, 11:1), corner (four, 8:1) and six line (six, 5:1), plus zero combinations such as the trio and first four. On a single-zero wheel they all carry about 2.70% edge. The roulette bets guide and online roulette page show where each goes.
Which inside bet has the best odds?
The six line has the highest chance of winning among inside bets, about 16.2% per spin on a single-zero wheel, because it covers six numbers. Its payout of 5:1 is correspondingly lower. In terms of cost, every standard inside bet on a single-zero wheel has the same 2.70% edge, so none is cheaper. Avoid the American top line, at about 7.89%. Our best roulette bet answer and roulette odds page compare them.
Are inside bets better than outside bets?
No, inside and outside bets cost the same on a single-zero wheel, about 2.70% of stakes over time. Inside bets win less often but pay more, so results swing harder. Outside bets win close to half the time on even-money options but pay 1:1. The only cheaper standard choice is an even-money outside bet on a French table with la partage. Compare outside bets and the la partage rule.
What is a street bet in roulette?
A street bet covers the three numbers in one horizontal row of the layout, such as 22, 23 and 24, and pays 11:1. You place the chip on the outer edge of that row. It wins 3 times in 37 on a single-zero wheel, about 8.1%, with the standard 2.70% edge. The trio bet on 0-1-2 or 0-2-3 also pays 11:1. See the split bet and corner bet entries for the neighbouring options.
What is a six line bet?
A six line, also called a double street, covers two neighbouring rows of three numbers, such as 31 to 36, and pays 5:1. The chip sits on the outer edge where those two rows meet. It wins 6 times in 37 on a single-zero wheel, about 16.2%, and has the usual 2.70% edge. It is the broadest inside bet on standard tables. Our roulette odds page lists it beside every other bet, and European roulette shows the layout.
Why does a straight-up bet pay 35 to 1 and not 36 to 1?
Paying 35:1 rather than the fair 36:1 is how the casino earns its edge on a single-zero wheel. Every inside payout is set as if the wheel had 36 numbers, but zero adds a 37th pocket. Over 37 spins, one straight-up win returns 36 units against 37 staked, so the house keeps one unit, about 2.70%. Read the house edge entry and the straight up page for worked numbers.
