Straight up meaning: a roulette bet placed on a single number, with the chip sitting squarely inside that number’s box. It pays 35 to 1, wins on 1 spin in 37 on a single-zero wheel, and carries the same 2.70% house edge as most other bets on that table. It is the highest-paying standard bet on the layout and the one that misses most often.
A straight-up bet covers one number, including 0, and pays 35:1.
Your chance is 1 in 37 on a single-zero wheel and 1 in 38 with a double zero.
Going 100 spins without your number landing happens about 6–7% of the time.
The edge is the same as an even-money bet; only the swings are bigger.

Straight up meaning: one chip on one number
A straight-up bet is the most direct wager in roulette. You choose a number, place a chip in the middle of its box without touching any line, and if the ball lands there you are paid 35 times your stake plus the stake back. Any number on the layout qualifies, including zero and, on American tables, 00.
On French tables the same bet is called en plein. Because it covers only one pocket, it belongs to the inside bets group alongside splits, streets and corners. Chips that sit on a line between numbers are not straight-up bets; they are splits or corners and pay less.
One in 37 sounds like once every 37 spins. That is the average, not a schedule. Here is how often a single number fails to appear across different session lengths on a single-zero wheel.

So even after a full 37 spins, there is roughly a one in three chance your number has not come up once. That is where the high volatility of straight-up betting comes from.
Straight-up bets in pounds: worked examples
£1 on 17: if 17 lands, you get £36 back (£35 win plus £1 stake). Any other result loses £1.
£5 on 0 for 37 spins: total stakes £185. If zero lands once, £180 comes back and you are £5 down, which is the edge in action. Land it twice and you are £175 up; miss every time and you are £185 down.
£1 on each of five numbers: £5 per spin. A hit returns £36, so you net £31; a miss loses £5. Your chance of a hit rises to 5 in 37, but the edge stays at 2.70%.
Spreading chips across more numbers changes how often you win and by how much. It never changes the long-run cost per pound staked.
How to place a straight-up bet online
Open a roulette table and read its limits; many tables set a lower maximum per number than for outside bets.
Choose a chip value from the chip tray.
Tap the centre of the number, not its edge, so the chip does not land on a line.
Check the bet total shown on screen, then confirm before the betting timer ends.
On RNG tables, press spin; each round takes at least 5 seconds.
Many tables also offer a racetrack view for neighbour bets, which place straight-up chips on a number and the pockets either side of it on the wheel. Our how to play live roulette guide shows the controls, and table limits explained covers per-number maximums.
Straight up in Lightning and other feature roulette
Feature games change the straight-up payout. In Lightning Roulette, ordinary numbers pay less than 35:1 so that randomly struck numbers can carry multipliers. Double Ball Roulette adds a second ball and its own payout table. Always read the help screen, because the edge on these versions differs from the standard 2.70%.
UK rules and straight-up betting
The £5 (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24) stake limits are for online slots and do not cover roulette, as the Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) states. Table limits apply instead. RNG roulette cannot autoplay and must take at least 5 seconds per round since 17 January 2025; our table game speed rules page explains why. Straight-up bets lose most spins, which makes chasing tempting. A loss limit set before you start is the simplest guard.
Hot and cold numbers: straight-up myths
Live tables often display hot and cold numbers from recent spins. They describe the past only. A number that has not landed in 150 spins has exactly the same 1 in 37 chance next time. Progressions that raise straight-up stakes after misses, like those covered in betting systems explained, add risk without changing the edge.

Frequently asked questions
What does straight up mean in roulette?
Straight up means a bet on a single number, with your chip placed in the centre of that number’s box. If the ball lands on your number you are paid 35:1 plus your stake. It is the highest standard payout on the roulette table and the least likely to win on any one spin: 1 in 37 on a single-zero wheel. You can bet straight up on zero too. See roulette bets explained and online roulette for the full layout.
How much does a £10 straight-up bet pay?
A winning £10 straight-up bet pays £350 profit, and your £10 stake is returned, so £360 comes back to your balance. If the number misses, you lose the £10. Feature games such as Lightning Roulette pay less on ordinary numbers, so the help screen is the place to confirm the payout. Over time the house still keeps about 2.70% of stakes on a single-zero wheel. Read roulette odds and the paytable entry for comparisons.
What are the odds of hitting a straight-up number?
The odds are 1 in 37 on a single-zero wheel, about 2.70%, and 1 in 38 on an American double-zero wheel, about 2.63%. Expressed as odds against, that is 36 to 1 and 37 to 1, while the payout is 35 to 1 on both. That gap is the house edge. Over 37 spins there is still about a 36% chance your number never lands. Our understanding casino odds guide and house edge entry explain the difference.
Is a straight-up bet better than betting on red?
Neither is better in long-run cost: on a single-zero wheel both carry a 2.70% house edge. The difference is the pattern of results. Red wins almost half the time and pays 1:1, so your balance moves gently. Straight-up wins rarely but pays 35:1, so swings are far larger. On French tables with la partage, red actually becomes cheaper. Compare the even money entry with our answer on the best roulette bet.
Can I bet straight up on zero?
Yes, zero accepts a straight-up bet like any other number and pays 35:1. On an American wheel you can also back 00 straight up at the same price. A zero straight-up carries the same 2.70% edge on a single-zero table as any other single number, so it is not a special value bet. Zero also appears in splits and the first four bet. The zero entry and our split bet page list each option.
What is a hot number in roulette?
A hot number is simply one that has landed more often than average in recent spins, as shown on a table’s statistics panel. It has no effect on future results, because each spin is independent and every number keeps its 1 in 37 chance on a single-zero wheel. Cold numbers are not due either. Use the panel as a record, not a forecast. Our can you predict roulette answer and RNG entry explain why.
