Wild meaning in slots

Wild meaning: a wild is a slot symbol that substitutes for other symbols to help complete a winning combination, much like a joker in a card game. Most wilds can replace any regular symbol but not the scatter or bonus symbol. Many slots add a twist, so a wild may also expand, stick, move or carry a multiplier.

Key takeaways

  • A wild stands in for regular symbols to complete wins; it usually cannot replace scatters.
  • Where a wild could make several wins, slots pay the highest one on that line.
  • Common variants are expanding, sticky, walking, stacked and multiplier wilds.
  • Wilds are already priced into the RTP, so more wilds do not mean better value.

Wild meaning: the substitute symbol

Picture a line reading cherry, cherry, wild, cherry, lemon. If the wild counts as a cherry, the line pays four cherries. That is the whole idea: the wild fills a gap so a combination can pay. On a payline slot it substitutes along the line, on a ways to win slot it substitutes on adjacent reels, and on a cluster pays game it can join more than one touching group at once.

The paytable marks the wild and lists what it can and cannot replace. The near-universal exception is the scatter: because scatters start features, studios rarely let wilds stand in for them. Book of Dead is a well-known example of a merged symbol, where the book acts as both wild and scatter.

How wild substitution is decided

  • Highest win wins. If a wild could complete two different combinations on the same line, the game pays the higher one only.
  • Wilds can pay on their own. Many paytables list a payout for three, four or five wilds in a row, which may be the top regular prize.
  • Some reels never carry wilds. Starburst’s wilds appear only on reels two, three and four, which affects how often they land.
  • Wild multipliers stack or add. Where several multiplier wilds sit on one win, the help screen states whether their values are multiplied together or added.

Those details sit in the help pages of each game; reading casino game help screens walks through where to look.

Wild meaning in pounds: a substitution example

Take a 10-line slot at £1 total stake, so 10p per line. The paytable (illustrative) pays 5× line bet for three crowns, 20× for four, 100× for five, and 50× for three wilds.

  1. Line 4 shows crown, crown, wild, wild, wild. Counted as crowns, the line is five crowns, worth 100× line bet in this paytable, so £10.
  2. Counted as three wilds from the right, it would pay nothing, because most lines read from the left. From the left it is two crowns then wilds, so the crowns version applies.
  3. The game compares the options and pays the highest: £10 on a £1 spin.

Change the line to wild, wild, wild, lemon, cherry. Treated as wilds the line pays 50 × 10p = £5; treated as lemons it would pay four lemons, which in many paytables is worth less. The game takes the better result. This is why the wild’s own payout row matters as much as its substitution role.

Types of wild symbol

Common wild variants and an example of each
TypeWhat it doesExample
Standard wildSubstitutes in one positionMost classic and video slots
Expanding wildGrows to cover the whole reelStarburst (reels 2–4, with a respin)
Sticky wildStays in place for several spinsDead or Alive (in the feature)
Walking wildMoves one reel per spin, often with a respinJack and the Beanstalk
Multiplier wildMultiplies any win it helps formMany modern video slots
Collecting wildGathers cash values shown on other symbolsBig Bass Bonanza (fisherman, in the feature)
Wild and scatter combinedSubstitutes and triggers the featureBook of Dead

Two of these have their own entries: expanding wild and sticky wild. A multiplier attached to a wild works the same way as one attached to any other part of a game.

Do more wilds mean a better slot?

No. A studio sets the RTP with every wild, every expansion and every multiplier included, so a game full of wilds can return exactly the same share of stakes as a plain three-reel game. What wilds change is the shape of the results. Sticky and multiplier wilds tend to push value into rare large outcomes, which raises volatility. Over many spins the house edge still means the casino keeps a share, so treat any session as paid entertainment.

Wild meaning outside slots

The word comes from card games. In Deuces Wild video poker, every 2 in the deck acts as a wild card, which is why the paytable starts at three of a kind rather than a pair of jacks. Some live game shows and slingo-style games also use wild markers that fill any space. The principle is identical: one item stands in for another to complete a result.

Wild features and UK slot rules

Wild features do not change the rules that apply to the spin. The stake limit is £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over, in force since 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24, in force since 21 May 2025; the Commission’s guidance on online slot stake limits (opens in a new tab) explains how a game cycle is counted. A respin triggered by an expanding or walking wild is part of that cycle. The game design rules in force since 31 October 2021 mean no autoplay, no turbo and at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and a wild that ‘completes’ a return no bigger than your stake must not be celebrated as a win.

Frequently asked questions

What does wild mean in slots?

A wild is a symbol that substitutes for other symbols to complete a winning combination. If a line has three cherries and a wild in the right place, the wild counts as a fourth cherry. Most wilds cannot replace scatter or bonus symbols, and many slots give the wild its own payout for a line of wilds. The paytable entry shows where these rules are listed, and slot features explained covers wilds alongside other mechanics.

Can a wild replace a scatter?

Usually not, because scatters trigger features and studios keep that route separate. The paytable normally says the wild substitutes for all symbols ‘except scatter’ or ‘except bonus’. The exception is a combined symbol such as the book in Book of Dead, which is both wild and scatter, so it can complete a line and also count towards the feature. When in doubt, the game’s help screen is the authority. The scatter glossary entry explains what the scatter does.

What is the difference between a wild and a joker?

In slots the two words often mean the same thing, as the joker is the traditional card-game wild. Some fruit-style games, such as Play’n GO’s Fire Joker, use a joker character as the theme and the wild symbol. In casino card games, a joker or wild card substitutes for any card to make the best hand, as the 2s do in Deuces Wild. The underlying role, standing in for something else, is identical.

Do wilds increase my chances of winning?

Wilds help individual spins pay, but they do not improve the game’s overall return beyond its published RTP. The studio sets the RTP with every wild already counted, so a slot with lots of wilds at 96% returns the same over the long run as a slot with none at 96%. Wilds change how often and how unevenly wins arrive. The RTP entry explains the figure, and how often do slots pay out covers hit rates.

What are the main types of wild?

The main types are standard, expanding, sticky, walking, stacked and multiplier wilds. An expanding wild grows to fill its reel, a sticky wild stays in place for several spins, a walking wild moves one reel each spin, and a multiplier wild increases the value of any win it helps form. Some modern games add collecting wilds that gather cash values. The dedicated entries for expanding wilds and sticky wilds go into each in more detail.

Is a line of wilds the top prize?

Sometimes, but not always. On many classic and video slots, five wilds on a line is the highest regular payout, but some games pay more for a top symbol, and features or jackpots can exceed both. The paytable lists every combination with its value, so check it rather than assume. Remember that the game always pays the highest possible result where a wild could form more than one. How to read a slot paytable shows how to compare rows.
