Deuces Wild video poker is a draw poker game in which all four 2s act as wild cards, so the lowest paying hand is three of a kind rather than a pair. The full-pay version returns about 100.76% with perfect strategy on paper, but online tables often pay less, and the right holds depend almost entirely on how many deuces you are dealt.
All four 2s are wild; three of a kind is the minimum paying hand, and there are extra hands such as five of a kind and a wild royal.
Full-pay Deuces Wild returns about 100.76% with flawless play; ‘Not So Ugly Ducks’ about 99.73%; reduced tables less.
Strategy starts with counting deuces: with three, you hold only the deuces unless you already have a wild royal or five of a kind.
Four of a kind is the engine of the game, appearing about once every 15 hands and supplying around a third of the return.
UK online versions have no autoplay and at least 5 seconds per game cycle (since 17 January 2025).

How Deuces Wild video poker differs from standard draw poker
The mechanics match every other video poker game: five cards, one draw, payment from a fixed table. The difference is that each 2 can stand in for any card you need. That simple change rewrites the hand rankings, adds new hands, and flips several instincts players bring from Jacks or Better.
A single pair pays nothing, and neither does two pair. Three of a kind is the first paying hand.
Five of a kind becomes possible, for example three 9s and two deuces.
A ‘wild royal’ (using at least one deuce) pays far less than a ‘natural royal’ made without wilds.
Holding four deuces pays a large fixed prize whatever the fifth card is.
High cards have no special value, because pairs don’t pay.
Because wild cards make strong hands common, the paytable pays modest amounts for hands that would be big wins elsewhere. A four of a kind, worth 25 in Jacks or Better, typically pays 5 here.
How to play Deuces Wild online, step by step
Choose a coin value and the number of coins; check whether the natural royal pays more at maximum coins.
Deal five cards.
Count the deuces in your hand before anything else.
Hold cards using the strategy for that number of deuces (see below).
Draw replacements for the cards you didn’t hold.
Your final hand is paid from the table; start the next hand yourself, as UK games have no autoplay.
Step three is the habit to build. A hand with two deuces and a pair of kings looks like a full house in waiting, but correct play depends on the deuce count first and the other cards second.
Deuces Wild paytables: full pay and reduced versions
Paytables vary more in Deuces Wild than in most video poker games, and small changes have big effects because four of a kind and the middle hands land so often. The table below compares full pay with ‘Not So Ugly Ducks’, a well-known alternative that pays less for four of a kind but more for others.

The returns above follow standard analysis such as Wizard of Odds’ video poker guide (opens in a new tab). Online versions frequently trim one or more lines, most often the four of a kind or the full house, and each cut costs real percentage points. The game’s help panel normally states the RTP for its table; our guide to reading casino game help screens shows where to look.
A theoretical return above 100% is not an offer of profit. It assumes a full-pay table and error-free play over hundreds of thousands of hands, and most real play falls short of both.

Four of a kind turning up more often than a full house surprises many players. With wild cards, a pair plus one deuce is already trips, and a pair plus two deuces is quads, so the game is built around quads. That also explains why reduced tables usually trim the quad payout first.
Deuces Wild strategy by number of deuces
Optimal strategy is a separate list for each deuce count. The condensed version below captures the decisions that matter most on a full-pay table; a full chart adds finer cases but changes the return only slightly.

Three Deuces Wild quirks to remember
With two pair and no deuces, hold just one pair. Two pair pays nothing, and keeping one pair gives the best shot at trips and quads.
Never hold a lone high card. A king with nothing else has no more value than a seven.
With three deuces, don’t keep a pair alongside them. Three deuces and a pair is already five of a kind, a made hand; three deuces with two unrelated cards should be cut to the deuces.
A Deuces Wild hand in pounds
Take a £1.25 bet (five 25p coins). You are dealt 2♣ 2♦ K♥ K♠ 7♣. Two deuces plus a pair of kings is already four of a kind, which pays 5 per coin, so you hold all four and the result is at least £6.25 back on your £1.25 stake. If the draw brings the third king, you have five of a kind, which pays 15 per coin, or £18.75.
Now take 2♥ 9♠ 9♦ 5♣ 5♥. One deuce with two pair is already a full house paying 3 per coin. The table above says hold it. Breaking it to chase quads gives up a sure £3.75 for a smaller expected return.
Over a long run of £1.25 hands on full pay, perfect play would in theory return slightly more than you stake. On a reduced table, or with typical mistakes, it returns less: a 97% game would cost about £3.75 per 100 hands. Plan your bankroll on the assumption that you will lose some of it.
Is Deuces Wild video poker volatile?
It is a little bumpier than Jacks or Better. The minimum hand only returns your stake, the four of a kind pays modestly, and a meaningful slice of the return sits in rare hands: four deuces and the natural royal. Sessions without either tend to drift down steadily, and a single four-deuce hit at 200 per coin can change a session on its own. Our volatility guide explains how to judge this kind of profile.

Clear strategy based on deuce count
Drawbacks
Full-pay tables are hard to find online
More strategy cases than Jacks or Better
Returns depend heavily on rare four-deuce and royal hits
UK rules for Deuces Wild video poker
Video poker is treated as a non-slot casino game in Great Britain. Since 17 January 2025 the Gambling Commission’s technical standards (opens in a new tab) have required at least 5 seconds per game cycle for such games, no autoplay and no feature that hurries the result. Our pages on the autoplay ban and table game speed rules give the background and dates.
Your net position and session time must also be shown, under the net position display rule. Video poker isn’t a reel-based slot, so the slot stake limits don’t set its maximum bet; the casino does. As with any game, demos require age verification, and gambling winnings are not taxed for UK players.
Deuces Wild myths and systems
‘Deuces are due after a run without them.’ Every deal is a new shuffle; the gambler’s fallacy applies.
‘Over 100% means I will come out ahead.’ Not in practice: the figure requires flawless play on a full-pay table over a very long run.
‘Doubling stakes after losses gets the money back.’ Progressions change bet sizes, not the paytable; see our Martingale page.
‘Holding a high card helps.’ In Deuces Wild, pairs don’t pay, so high cards have no special value.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Deuces Wild video poker?
Full-pay Deuces Wild returns about 100.76% with perfect strategy, the highest of the common video poker games. ‘Not So Ugly Ducks’ returns about 99.73%, and tables that cut the four of a kind or full house payout return less. Online versions often use reduced tables, so the help screen’s stated RTP is the number to trust for a specific game. Mistakes lower your real return further. Our RTP glossary entry explains what the figure measures.
What is the lowest winning hand in Deuces Wild?
Three of a kind is the lowest paying hand, and on most tables it only returns your stake. A single pair or two pair pays nothing, because with four wild cards in the deck pairs are too easy to make. This is why high cards carry no extra value and why, with two pair, you keep only one of the pairs. Our Jacks or Better page shows how the same hands are paid in a non-wild game.
What is the difference between a natural royal and a wild royal?
A natural royal flush is A-K-Q-J-10 of one suit with no deuces, and on full-pay tables it pays 800 per coin at maximum coins. A wild royal uses at least one deuce to complete the same hand and pays 25 per coin. The natural royal lands about once in 45,000 hands; the wild royal around once in 560. Our royal flush glossary entry explains the hand and its odds in other games.
Should I hold three deuces and a pair?
Three deuces and a pair is already five of a kind, a made hand that pays 15 per coin on full pay, so you hold all five cards. The rule ‘hold only the deuces’ applies when the other two cards don’t complete a wild royal or five of a kind. With three deuces you will finish with at least four of a kind whatever the draw brings, so there is no need to keep unrelated cards. Our video poker guide covers strategy principles across variants.
Why do I keep only one pair from two pair?
Because two pair pays nothing in Deuces Wild, and keeping one pair gives better chances at three of a kind, four of a kind and higher. Drawing three cards to a single pair brings more chances of finding deuces, which turn a pair into trips or quads. Holding both pairs only leaves one draw for a full house. It feels wrong but is correct on full-pay tables. Our expected value glossary entry explains how such decisions are compared.
Is Deuces Wild better than Jacks or Better?
On full-pay tables Deuces Wild returns more, about 100.76% against 99.54%, but full-pay Deuces is hard to find online and the strategy is more involved. A reduced Deuces table can return less than a full-pay Jacks or Better game. If you are learning, Jacks or Better is simpler; if you know the deuce-count strategy and find a strong table, Deuces Wild can be cheaper to play. Our best odds casino games guide compares options.
Can I play Deuces Wild for free?
Some UK casinos offer demo versions, but only after your age has been verified, as licensed sites have required since May 2019. A demo is a good place to practise counting deuces and following the strategy table without spending money. Results in demo mode are random, just like real play, so they don’t show what will happen with real stakes. Our demo play guide explains how UK free modes work.
How often do you get four deuces?
With optimal strategy, about once every 4,900 hands. At a steady 400 hands an hour that is roughly once every 12 hours of play, so many sessions won’t include one. Four deuces pays 200 per coin on full-pay tables and makes up about 4% of the theoretical return, which is why sessions without it usually come in below the headline figure. Our guide to hit frequency explains how often hands land and why it matters.
Does autoplay exist for Deuces Wild at UK casinos?
No. Autoplay has been banned for online slots since 31 October 2021 and for all other online casino games, including video poker, since 17 January 2025. Each hand must be started by you, and RNG games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle. Turbo and quick-draw features are not allowed. The aim is to slow the pace of play. Our page on the autoplay ban explains how the rule developed.
Can I use bonus money on Deuces Wild?
It depends on the bonus terms, and video poker is often excluded or counted at a low rate because skilled play returns so much. Since 19 January 2026 wagering is capped at 10x in Great Britain, so a £30 bonus means at most £300 of qualifying play, but a 10% weighting turns that into £3,000 of video poker. Read the excluded games list before opting in. Our guide on how to read bonus terms shows what to check.
