Dragon Tiger is a two-card casino game: one card is dealt to Dragon, one to Tiger, and the higher card wins. With eight decks and the usual half-stake loss on a tie, the Dragon and Tiger bets carry a 3.73% house edge, while the Tie bet costs far more. Here are the rules, payouts and odds as of 20 October 2026.
Each round deals just two cards; the higher card wins, with ace usually ranked lowest and king highest.
Dragon and Tiger pay evens and lose half the stake on a tie, giving a 3.73% edge with eight decks.
The Tie bet costs 10.36% at 11 to 1 and 32.77% at 8 to 1, so check the printed payout.
Partner free spins can’t be used on Dragon Tiger. 18+, terms apply.

What is Dragon Tiger?
Dragon Tiger is one of the fastest card games in a casino. It is widely said to have started in Cambodia before spreading across Asian casinos, and it is often described as a stripped-down cousin of baccarat. Where baccarat deals up to three cards per hand and adds totals, Dragon Tiger deals exactly one card to each side and compares them directly. You bet on which side will hold the higher card, or on a tie.
Online, it is mostly found in live casino lobbies, streamed from studios such as those run by Evolution, whose company site (opens in a new tab) lists its live table range. Evolution also lists a First Person Dragon Tiger, an RNG version that looks like a live table without a dealer.
Dragon Tiger rules step by step
Bet on Dragon, Tiger or Tie (and any side bets the table offers) during the betting window.
The dealer draws one card from the shoe face up to the Dragon position.
A second card is drawn face up to the Tiger position.
The higher card wins. Suits don’t matter for the main bet; only rank counts.
If both cards have the same rank, the round is a tie: Tie bets win and Dragon and Tiger bets usually lose half their stake.
Winnings are paid and the next round begins, usually with no cards burned in between.

Dragon Tiger payouts and house edge
We calculated the odds below for an eight-deck shoe, the most common setup. An eight-deck shoe holds 416 cards. Whatever the Dragon card is, 31 of the remaining 415 share its rank, so a tie comes up 7.47% of the time. Dragon and Tiger then split the remaining 92.53% equally.

The half-stake rule is the source of the main edge. Imagine £10 on Dragon for 1,000 rounds: you win about 463 times (+£4,627), lose about 463 times (−£4,627) and tie about 75 times, losing £5 each (−£373). Net result: about −£373 on £10,000 staked, or 3.73%.
The Tie bet: why the payout matters so much
A tie lands about once every 13 or 14 rounds. To break even, the Tie bet would need to pay about 12.4 to 1. At 11 to 1 the edge is 10.36%; at 8 to 1, still seen on some tables, it is 32.77%, meaning almost a third of every pound staked on it is lost over time.
A suited tie, where both cards match in rank and suit, is rarer. In an eight-deck shoe, only 7 of 415 remaining cards complete it (1.69%), and at 50 to 1 the edge is 13.98%. If a table pays less than 50 to 1, the cost goes up sharply.
Dragon Tiger side bets
Some versions add side bets on the Dragon or Tiger card alone: whether it is big or small, odd or even, or of a particular suit. On many tables a 7 makes big/small and odd/even bets lose, which is how the house builds in its margin on those even-money looking wagers. Paytables vary, so read the help screen for the exact rules and RTP.

Dragon Tiger speed and UK game rules
Dragon Tiger’s two-card deal makes it very quick, which is the main thing to manage. Since 17 January 2025, Gambling Commission rules in the Remote Technical Standards (opens in a new tab) require every online casino game cycle to be started individually and set a minimum of 5 seconds per cycle on RNG non-slot games. Live tables are slower because of the betting window and deal.
No autoplay or auto-bet: you confirm each round.
Your net position and session time must be shown.
The £5 and £2 slot stake limits don’t apply to card games; table limits do.
Any bonus used here can’t require more than 10 times the bonus in wagering since 19 January 2026.
Speed matters to cost. At an RNG table running one round every 10 seconds, £5 a round is £1,800 staked in an hour, with an expected cost of about £67 on Dragon. At a live table running one round a minute, the same stake puts £300 through in an hour. Our table limits guide explains how minimums and maximums are set.
Dragon Tiger strategy: card counting, trends and roads
Because the shoe isn’t reshuffled after every hand, some players wonder whether counting cards helps. In theory, a shoe rich in one rank makes ties slightly more likely, but in an eight-deck shoe the effect is tiny, appears rarely and is too small to overcome the edge in practice. Online RNG versions typically use a fresh shuffle each round. See our page on card counting online for why it rarely transfers to live streams.

Scorecards show history only; each deal is independent.
On a tie you lose half of both stakes, and otherwise you break even, so the edge still bites.
Dragon Tiger vs baccarat
If you like Dragon Tiger’s simplicity but want a lower edge, baccarat is the obvious alternative. Its Banker bet costs about 1.06% and Player about 1.24% with eight decks, against 3.73% for Dragon or Tiger. Baccarat takes longer per hand, which also reduces how much you stake per hour.
Set a stake, a time limit and a loss limit before you play, and stick to the Dragon or Tiger bets if you want the lowest cost. Use the casino’s deposit limits and time-out tools. Frequently asked questions
How do you play Dragon Tiger?
You bet on Dragon, Tiger or Tie, then the dealer deals one card face up to each side. The side with the higher card wins; suits don’t count for the main bet, and at most tables the king is highest and the ace lowest. If the ranks match, Tie bets win and Dragon and Tiger bets usually lose half their stake. A round takes only a few seconds once betting closes. Our casino card games guide covers similar formats.
What is the house edge on Dragon Tiger?
With eight decks and the usual rule that Dragon and Tiger lose half on a tie, those two bets carry a 3.73% house edge. The Tie bet costs 10.36% when it pays 11 to 1 and 32.77% when it pays 8 to 1. A suited tie at 50 to 1 costs 13.98%. Different deck counts and paytables change these slightly, so check the help screen. See the house edge glossary entry for the method.
What happens on a tie in Dragon Tiger?
When both cards have the same rank, Tie bets are paid, usually at 11 to 1 or 8 to 1, and Dragon and Tiger bets lose half their stake at most tables. So £10 on Dragon returns £5 when a tie appears. A tie happens about 7.47% of the time, roughly once every 13 or 14 rounds. That half-stake loss is the entire source of the house edge on the main bets. Our tie bet glossary entry explains ties in baccarat too.
Is Dragon Tiger better than baccarat?
On cost, no. Baccarat’s Banker bet carries about 1.06% and Player about 1.24%, both lower than Dragon Tiger’s 3.73%. Dragon Tiger is simpler and faster, which some players prefer, but speed raises how much you stake per hour, adding to the cost. If the lowest long-run price matters most, baccarat wins; if you want a quick two-card comparison, Dragon Tiger delivers that. Our online baccarat UK guide has the full comparison.
Can you count cards in Dragon Tiger?
In theory a shoe can become slightly richer in one rank, nudging the tie probability, but in an eight-deck shoe the effect is small and rare. RNG versions usually shuffle every round. No counting method turns the main bets into positive-expectation wagers in practice. Casinos may also restrict accounts that bet in unusual patterns. See our guide to card counting online for the details.
Is Dragon Tiger rigged?
No, not at casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. Live games use physical cards dealt from a shoe on camera, and RNG versions use generators checked by independent testing labs. The house edge is built into the payouts, which are published in the help screen. If a round is settled incorrectly, contact the casino with the round ID and use the independent dispute service it names if needed. See are live dealers real? for how studios work.
Which side wins more, Dragon or Tiger?
Neither. Both receive one card from the same shoe, so each has the same 46.27% chance of winning with eight decks, and each pays the same 1 to 1. The scoreboard may show streaks for one side, but those are normal results of random dealing, not a sign of what comes next. Picking a side based on recent results doesn’t change the 3.73% edge. Our gambling myths guide explains why streaks feel meaningful.
Is there a maximum bet on Dragon Tiger in the UK?
There is no national stake limit for Dragon Tiger; the £5 and £2 per-spin limits apply only to online slots. Each table sets its own minimum and maximum, shown in the lobby. If you play with bonus money, the bonus terms may impose their own cap, such as Casumo’s £5 maximum bet while a bonus is active. Our max bet rule explainer covers how those terms are enforced. 18+, terms apply.
Can I play Dragon Tiger on mobile?
Yes, live and First Person Dragon Tiger tables stream to mobile browsers and casino apps at casinos that carry them. The layout is simple, with three main betting areas, so it works well on a phone. Because rounds are quick, it is easy to play more than planned on a small screen; a reality check reminder helps. Our mobile casino guide covers apps versus browser play.
