Casino bonus max bet rule

The casino bonus max bet rule is a term that limits how much you can stake on a single spin or round while a bonus is active, and breaking it can cost you the bonus and its winnings. Casumo, for example, sets the limit at £5 per bet. It is separate from the legal online slot stake limits of £5 (aged 25+) and £2 (aged 18–24), and you have to respect both.

Key takeaways

  • A bonus max bet is a contract term set by the casino; the £5 and £2 slot limits are licence conditions that apply to all slot play.
  • On slots, the lower of the two limits applies to you; on table games only the bonus limit applies.
  • Breaking the max bet can lead to bonus winnings being removed, so set your stake before you start.
  • Casumo’s welcome bonus has a £5 maximum bet while the bonus is active (checked 5 October 2026).

What the casino bonus max bet rule is

A maximum bet term caps the stake you can place on any one game round while you are playing with an active bonus. It usually appears in the significant terms as “max bet £5 with an active bonus” or similar. It applies from the moment the bonus is credited until the wagering requirement is complete, the bonus is forfeited or it expires.

The term exists because of how variance works. A player who stakes a large share of a bonus on one spin is aiming for a single big win that would clear the requirement at once, then stopping. Most of the time that fails, but when it succeeds the bonus has been converted at very little cost to the player. A stake ceiling keeps play closer to the normal pattern the bonus was priced on. Our answer on why casinos limit bets with a bonus covers the reasoning in more depth.

The bonus max bet versus the legal slot stake limits

UK online slots also have legal stake limits, attached as a condition to every remote casino licence: £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over from 9 April 2025, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24 from 21 May 2025. The Gambling Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out how they work. They apply to all slot play, with or without a bonus, and they don’t cover games such as roulette or blackjack.

The legal limits are explained on our pages about the £5 slot stake limit and the £2 limit for 18 to 24s. A bonus term can be stricter than the law, for example £2 or £4 per spin for everyone, but it can’t let a slot player go above the legal cap.

What counts as one bet under a max bet rule

The rule applies to the total stake per game round, not to individual chips or lines. In practice:

  • Slots: the total stake per spin, as shown on the bet selector, including any optional extra bet that raises the stake. See bet level and coin size for how stakes are built.
  • Roulette: the total of all chips placed on one spin. Ten £1 chips on different numbers count as a £10 bet.
  • Blackjack: the opening stake plus any doubles, splits and side bets in the same hand can all be counted, depending on the wording.
  • Game cycle: for the legal slot limit, stakes placed within the same game cycle count together, as the Commission’s guidance describes.

If the terms are vague about doubles, splits or side bets, keep the whole round at or under the limit.

Take Casumo’s welcome offer: deposit £100, receive a £50 bonus (50% match, minimum deposit £20, up to £100), wager the bonus 10x within 7 days, maximum £5 per bet while the bonus is active. 18+, opt-in required; game, play and payment restrictions apply. The wagering target is £500.

On roulette with the same bonus, two £3 chips on one spin total £6, which breaks the £5 rule even though each chip is below it. And because table games are often weighted down, that £6 might add very little to wagering anyway; see game weighting explained.

What happens if you break the max bet rule

The usual consequence written into bonus terms is that the casino can remove the bonus and any winnings made while it was active. Your own deposit, if still in your cash balance, is normally unaffected. Some casinos block stakes above the limit in the game; others don’t, which means the system may accept a bet that the terms don’t allow. Don’t assume the software will stop you.

Read our guides to voided winnings and what happens if you break bonus terms. If you believe a term was applied unfairly, start with the casino’s complaints process, then take it to an approved dispute service such as IBAS, which explains how to raise a free dispute (opens in a new tab).

Is a casino bonus max bet rule fair under UK rules?

A max bet term is lawful if it is clear and fairly presented. The Gambling Commission’s licence code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab) requires bonus terms to be clear, transparent, fair and readily accessible, and the 10x wagering cap has applied since 19 January 2026. The Competition and Markets Authority’s 2018 undertakings with several operators, listed on its online gambling case page (opens in a new tab), also pushed for clearer bonus terms and for significant restrictions to be flagged up front.

In practice, a fair max bet term should be stated near the offer, give a pound figure rather than a vague phrase, and say what happens if it is broken. Our page on casino bonus terms rules explains the background.

How to stay within the max bet rule

  1. Find the maximum bet in the bonus terms before you deposit and write it down.
  2. Check your own age bracket against the legal slot limit and use the lower figure.
  3. Set the stake in each game before your first spin, and recheck it when you switch games.
  4. Avoid optional extra-bet modes that raise the stake above the limit.
  5. On table games, add up every chip and any doubles or side bets in the round.
  6. Once the wagering is complete or the bonus is forfeited, the bonus limit no longer applies.

Max bet rules and free spins offers

Free spins come with a fixed value set by the casino, so you can’t change the stake on them. Coral’s offer gives 100 free spins at 10p on selected games after you deposit and bet £10 on slots, and PlayOJO’s gives 80 spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza after a first deposit of at least £10. Both say there is no wagering on the spin winnings, so there is no bonus balance for a max bet term to protect. If spin winnings at another casino arrive as bonus funds with wagering, a max bet will usually apply to them. 18+, terms apply. See how free spins work.

Choosing a stake: the risk side of the max bet

The maximum is a ceiling, not a target. Bigger stakes reach a wagering target in fewer spins, but each spin can lose more, and the average cost of the wagering is the same whatever the stake: £500 of bets on a 96% RTP slot costs about £20 on average either way. Higher stakes simply make the swings sharper. Our guide to bankroll basics and the answer to do bigger bets win more explain why.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max bet rule on a casino bonus?

It is a term that limits your stake per spin or game round while a bonus is active. Casumo’s welcome bonus, for example, has a £5 maximum per bet. The limit lasts until the wagering is complete, the bonus is forfeited or it expires. Breaking it can lead to the bonus and any winnings made with it being removed. The max bet glossary entry gives a short definition.

Is the bonus max bet the same as the £5 slot limit?

No. The £5 slot limit is a legal condition on every UK remote casino licence, in force since 9 April 2025 for players aged 25 and over, and it applies to all slot play. A bonus max bet is a term set by the casino for play with an active bonus, and it can cover table games too. Sometimes both are £5, as with Casumo for a player aged 25 or over. Our £5 slot stake limit page explains the legal rule.

Which limit applies if I’m 22 and have a £5 bonus max bet?

The legal £2 limit applies on slots, because it is lower. Since 21 May 2025, players aged 18 to 24 can’t stake more than £2 per spin on online slots, whatever a bonus term says. On table games, which the slot rule doesn’t cover, the £5 bonus limit would be the one that matters. Always use the lower figure for the game you are playing. The £2 slot stake limit page covers the age rule.

Does the max bet include side bets and doubles?

Often yes, depending on the wording. Many terms measure the total stake in one game round, which can include doubles, splits and side bets in blackjack, or all chips placed on one roulette spin. If the terms aren’t specific, the safe approach is to keep the whole round at or under the limit. Ask support to confirm in writing if you are unsure. Our blackjack side bets page explains how those extra stakes work.

Will the casino stop me betting over the limit?

Not always. Some casinos block stakes above the bonus limit inside the game, while others accept the bet and enforce the term later by removing bonus winnings. The legal £5 and £2 slot limits are different, because every UK-licensed casino must apply them to all slot play. Don’t rely on software to keep you within a bonus term. Set your stake before you play, and see voided winnings explained for what can happen afterwards.

Can I lose my deposit for breaking the max bet rule?

Normally the penalty applies to the bonus and winnings made with it, not to your own deposit. Bonus terms usually say the casino may remove bonus funds and bonus winnings if the rule is broken. If your deposit was still in your cash balance, it should remain yours. If a casino takes more than the terms allow, complain to it first, then use the free dispute service named in its terms. Our guide on how to complain about a casino has the steps.

Why do casinos have a max bet with bonuses?

To stop a bonus being cleared with a few very large bets. A player staking a large share of a bonus on one spin has a small chance of a big win that completes the wagering at once. Most such attempts fail, but the ones that succeed cost the casino more than the bonus was priced for. A ceiling keeps play closer to normal stakes. Our answer on why casinos limit bets with a bonus goes into more detail.

Does the max bet still apply after I finish wagering?

No. Once the requirement is complete and the bonus converts to cash, the bonus max bet stops applying, and only the normal limits remain: the legal slot stake limits and each game’s own table limits. The same is true if you forfeit the bonus. Check the bonus area of your account to confirm the bonus is no longer active before raising stakes. See how wagering requirements work for how completion is recorded.

Do free spins have a max bet?

Free spins have a fixed value, so the stake is set for you. Coral’s and PlayOJO’s spins are worth 10p each, for example. The question is the winnings: if they are paid as cash or without wagering, as at Coral, Ladbrokes and PlayOJO, no bonus max bet applies to them. If another casino credits spin winnings as bonus funds with wagering, a max bet term usually covers that money. 18+, terms apply. Read free spins winnings explained.

Can a casino limit my stakes outside of a bonus?

Yes. Apart from the legal slot limits, casinos set table limits for each game, and they can restrict an individual account’s stakes under their terms, for example after a review. A bonus max bet is just one kind of limit and ends with the bonus. If your stakes are restricted and you don’t know why, ask the casino. Our answer on whether a casino can limit your stakes explains the common reasons.
