Tie bet meaning and odds

Tie bet meaning, in one line: you are wagering that the Player and Banker hands in baccarat finish on exactly the same total. It usually pays 8 to 1, lands on roughly one hand in ten or eleven, and gives the casino an edge of about 14.36%, more than ten times the cost of the two main bets.

Key takeaways

  • A tie bet wins only when both baccarat hands finish on the same total.
  • The common 8:1 payout carries a house edge of about 14.36% with eight decks; 9:1 tables cut that to about 4.84%.
  • Ties land on about 9.5% of hands, so long losing runs are normal.
  • When a tie lands, ordinary Player and Banker bets are returned, not lost.

Tie bet meaning: backing a draw between two hands

Baccarat deals a Player hand and a Banker hand, and most people stake on one or the other. The third box on the layout, usually marked Tie and printed with its payout, lets you back neither hand and predict a dead heat instead. If Player ends on 6 and Banker ends on 6, the tie bet wins. Any other result and it loses.

Totals in online baccarat run from 0 to 9, and the drawing rules push both hands towards the upper end, so matching totals are not rare. They are just not common enough to justify the payout most tables offer, as the numbers below show.

Tie bet payout and house edge compared

Figures below use the standard eight-deck game and the probabilities published in the Wizard of Odds baccarat analysis (opens in a new tab). Your table’s help screen shows the payout it actually uses.

A fair price for an outcome that lands about 9.5% of the time would be roughly 9.5 to 1. Paying 8 to 1 trims more than a full unit off that, and that is where most of the 14.36% comes from. For a broader view of where this sits, our house edge guide compares it with blackjack, roulette and slots.

How much a tie bet costs: a worked £5 example

Imagine staking £5 on Tie for 200 hands. That is £1,000 in total stakes. At about 9.5% you would expect around 19 ties on average, each returning £45 (£40 profit plus the £5 stake). That is about £855 back from £1,000, an expected shortfall near £144.

Put the same £1,000 through the Player bet and the expected cost is about £12.40. Same game, same table, more than ten times the price. Variance is the other side: you can easily go 30 or 40 hands without a tie, then see two in a row. Neither streak tells you anything about the next hand.

These are long-run averages. A short session can finish well above or well below them, which is why budgets matter more than predictions.

What a tie means for your Player and Banker bets

In standard punto banco, a tie is a push for the two main bets: your stake comes back and nothing is won or lost. So if you have £10 on the Banker bet and the hands finish 7 to 7, the £10 is returned. This is why the main bets keep such low edges even though ties occur about once in every ten or eleven hands.

A few variants handle ties differently, and in some games a tie costs part of your main stake. Always confirm in the game’s help screen; our guide to reading casino game help screens shows where to look.

Tie bets in other casino games

  • Dragon Tiger: a one-card-each game with its own tie box. In many versions a tie also costs half of any Dragon or Tiger stake, so ties matter more there than in baccarat.
  • Blackjack: there is no tie bet on standard tables. An equal total is simply a push and your stake is returned.
  • Casino War: a tie on the main hand leads to a choice to go to war or surrender, and some tables add a separate tie wager.
  • Football Studio: a game-show style card game with a draw outcome that works like a tie bet; check its payout in the game rules.

Tie bets and UK online casino rules

Baccarat sits outside the online slot stake limits of £5 (age 25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24), so tie limits come from the table. Since 17 January 2025 RNG versions must run at least 5 seconds per round with no autoplay, under the speed and design rules summarised on our online casino game design rules page. Bonus terms commonly weight table games low or exclude them, and some list tie bets specifically, so read the wagering requirement section before playing a bonus on baccarat.

Is a tie ever due? Why patterns don’t help

Live tables display roadmaps showing where ties fell earlier in the shoe. After 25 hands without one, it can feel overdue. It is not. The chance stays around 9.5% for every hand regardless of what came before. Increasing your stake to chase a tie is the classic way the 14% edge gets bigger in pounds. Where to find baccarat tables at licensed UK casinos

Coral and PlayOJO are both licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Coral’s casino app includes live casino games and PlayOJO lists live casino among its products; look in each lobby for a baccarat table and check its tie payout before staking. Neither welcome offer is for baccarat. Coral (18+, new players, running 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027) gives 100 free spins at 10p each on selected slots once you deposit and bet £10 on slots; accept within 48 hours, use within 7 days, no wagering on winnings, and PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, prepaid and certain debit cards don’t qualify. PlayOJO (18+, new UK customers, not Northern Ireland) adds 80 free spins at 10p on Big Bass Bonanza when you first deposit £10 or more, with no wagering. Terms apply. More detail is on the Coral live casino page, the PlayOJO live casino page and the wider glossary.

Frequently asked questions

What does tie mean in baccarat?

A tie in baccarat means the Player and Banker hands finish with the same point total, such as 6 and 6. You can back that outcome with the tie bet, which usually pays 8 to 1. If you backed Player or Banker instead, a tie returns your stake rather than losing it. Ties occur on roughly 9.5% of hands in the eight-deck game. The baccarat rules page explains how totals are reached, and the natural entry covers hands of 8 or 9.

Is the tie bet worth it in baccarat?

On most tables the tie bet is the costliest wager on the baccarat layout, with a house edge of about 14.36% at 8 to 1. On £100 of stakes, that is an expected cost near £14, compared with around £1 on Player or Banker. Where a table pays 9 to 1 the edge falls to about 4.84%, which is still several times higher. For comparisons across games, read best odds casino games and casino odds explained.

How often does a tie happen in baccarat?

A tie happens on about 9.5% of hands in standard eight-deck baccarat, or roughly once every ten or eleven rounds on average. That average hides big swings. Going 30 or more hands without a tie is common, and two ties in a row also happens. None of these runs changes the chance on the next hand, because each round is independent. Our hit frequency entry explains why averages and streaks differ, and the house edge entry shows the cost.

Do I lose my Banker or Player bet on a tie?

No, in standard baccarat a tie returns Player and Banker stakes in full. The round is treated as a push, so you neither win nor lose on those bets. That rule is a big reason the main bets carry such small edges. Some side games and variants treat ties differently, and Dragon Tiger often takes half your main stake on a tie, so check the rules for the specific table. See the push entry and our Dragon Tiger guide for the differences.

What does tie pay at 8 to 1 on a £10 bet?

A £10 tie bet at 8 to 1 pays £80 profit, and you also get your £10 stake back, so £90 returns to your balance. Some casinos quote this as 9 for 1, which means the same thing: £90 back including the stake. Tables paying 9 to 1 would return £100 in total. Payouts vary by game, so read the payout printed on the layout. Our paytable entry and the online baccarat guide explain how to read odds.

Can I use a tie bet to clear a bonus?

Usually not in any useful way, because many UK bonus terms give baccarat a low weighting or exclude it from wagering, and some specifically list tie bets. Since 19 January 2026 wagering is capped at 10 times the bonus, but the game rules in each promotion still decide what counts. Read the eligible games list before you play. The game weighting guide and 10x wagering cap page explain how contributions are calculated.

Is there a tie bet in blackjack?

Standard blackjack has no tie bet: if you and the dealer finish on the same total, it is a push and your stake is returned. Some tables offer side bets with their own payouts, but these are separate products with higher edges, not a tie wager. If the dealer has blackjack and so do you, that is also a push unless you took even money earlier. Read blackjack side bets and the blackjack rules guide for the full picture.
