Voisins du zero meaning: "neighbours of zero" is a French roulette bet covering the 17 numbers that sit closest to zero on a single-zero wheel, from 22 round to 25. It uses nine chips spread over splits, a trio and a corner, and wins on almost half of all spins, though usually for a modest net amount.
Voisins du zéro covers 17 wheel numbers, from 22 to 25 with zero in the middle, using 9 chips.
Two chips go on the 0-2-3 trio and two on the 25-26-28-29 corner; five single chips go on splits.
With £1 chips it nets +£15 on 0, 2 or 3, +£9 on the other 14 covered numbers and −£9 on the remaining 20.
Its house edge is the usual 2.70%; covering more numbers does not lower the casino's advantage.

Voisins du zéro meaning and the numbers it covers
On a European wheel, the pockets either side of zero run 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, then 0, then 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25. That arc of 17 pockets, just under half of the wheel, is the voisins du zéro sector. It is one of the three classic French "announced" bets, along with tiers du cylindre and orphelins, which together cover every number.
In a land-based casino you would call the bet to the croupier and hand over nine chips. Online it sits on the racetrack of French roulette and many European roulette tables, usually labelled "Voisins" or "Voisins du Zéro". It is often confused with a simple neighbours bet, which covers any number plus a few either side, but the voisins bet has a fixed, specific layout.
Exactly where the nine voisins du zéro chips go
The bet is built from split bets, one three-number trio and one corner bet. Doubling up on the trio and the corner is what makes the total nine.

Now average it out over the 37 equally likely pockets: 3 × £15 plus 14 × £9, minus 20 × £9, is a total of −£9. Divided by 37, that is about −24p per spin, or 2.70% of the £9 stake. The bet wins 17 times in 37, but each win is smaller than each loss, which is exactly how the house edge shows up. The Wizard of Odds roulette page (opens in a new tab) confirms that every standard combination on a single-zero wheel carries this same edge.
Voisins du zéro versus jeu zéro
Jeu zéro, "zero game", is a compact version covering just the seven pockets closest to zero: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. It uses four chips: splits on 0/3, 12/15 and 32/35, plus a straight-up chip on 26. Some racetracks show it as a separate button next to voisins. With £1 chips, a hit on 26 returns £36 (net +£32), any of the other six returns £18 (net +£14), and a miss costs £4. The edge is identical.

Frequently asked questions
What does voisins du zéro mean in English?
In English it means "neighbours of zero". It names both a section of the roulette wheel, the 17 pockets running from 22 to 25 with zero in the middle, and the nine-chip bet that covers that section. French is used because these named bets come from French casino tradition. Our French roulette guide explains the other French terms you'll see, and the glossary lists more.
How many chips is a voisins du zéro bet?
A voisins du zéro bet takes nine chips. Two go on the 0-2-3 trio, two go on the 25-26-28-29 corner, and one goes on each of five splits: 4/7, 12/15, 18/21, 19/22 and 32/35. With £1 chips the bet costs £9, and with £5 chips it costs £45, so check the table minimum before using it. See table limits explained for how chip minimums work on racetrack bets.
What does voisins du zéro pay?
With £1 chips, voisins du zéro returns £24 if 0, 2 or 3 wins, giving a net £15, and £18 on any of the other 14 covered numbers, a net £9. On the remaining 20 numbers the full £9 is lost. Those returns come from standard trio, corner and split payouts, which you can check on our roulette odds and payouts table. Scale the figures up or down in line with your chip size.
What are the odds of winning voisins du zéro?
The bet wins on 17 of the 37 pockets on a single-zero wheel, a 45.9% chance on any spin. That makes it the racetrack bet that hits most often, but it is not better value: the house edge is still 2.70%, the same as an even-money bet on red or black. Frequent smaller wins and less frequent larger losses balance out to the same long-run cost. Which casino games have the best odds puts that figure in context.
Can you bet voisins du zéro on American roulette?
Usually not. The bet is built around the single-zero wheel order, and double-zero wheels arrange the numbers differently, so the 17 numbers would no longer sit together. Most double-zero games don't offer the French racetrack bets at all. American roulette also carries a 5.26% edge instead of 2.70%, so a single-zero table is the better-value home for racetrack betting in any case.
Is voisins du zéro a winning strategy?
No. No roulette bet, voisins included, can overcome the house edge, and no sector of a fair wheel is "due" to come up. Licensed games use tested random number generators or physical wheels, and every pocket keeps the same 1 in 37 chance each spin. Covering more numbers only changes how often you win and by how much, not your expected loss. Our guides to betting systems and the gambler's fallacy explain why.
What is the difference between voisins and tiers?
The voisins bet covers the 17 numbers around zero with nine chips, while tiers du cylindre covers the 12 numbers on the opposite side of the wheel, from 27 to 33, with six split chips. Voisins wins more often but tiers pays a bigger net amount relative to its stake on each hit. Both carry the same 2.70% edge. The tiers du cylindre entry shows its full layout and a worked example.
