Video poker UK guide

Video poker in the UK is a single-player casino game where you are dealt five cards, choose which to hold, and draw replacements to make the best poker hand. Payouts come from a fixed paytable, so the return depends on which variant you pick and how well you play: the best versions return over 99% with accurate decisions.

Key takeaways

  • Video poker deals from a virtual 52-card deck that is reshuffled every hand; each draw is a real choice that affects the return.
  • The paytable sets the RTP: a ‘9/6’ Jacks or Better table returns about 99.5% with perfect play, an ‘8/5’ table about 97.3%.
  • Strategy matters more than in almost any other RNG game; casual play can cost 2–4% of RTP.
  • Since 17 January 2025, UK video poker has no autoplay and each game cycle lasts at least 5 seconds.
  • Always read the help screen: the same game name can carry very different paytables.

What is video poker?

Video poker began as a bar-top machine in the 1970s and moved online with the first internet casinos. It looks like a slot because you play alone against a screen, but underneath it is a card game: a random number generator shuffles a virtual deck, deals you five cards, and then deals replacements from the same deck for any cards you throw away.

There is no dealer hand to beat and no other players. You are paid according to the poker hand you finish with, from a table printed on the screen. That paytable is public, the deck is known, and every possible draw can be calculated, which is why video poker is one of the few RNG games where the exact return of a perfect strategy is known to the decimal place.

For UK players the appeal is control. Slots set the RTP in the maths model and you can’t change it. In video poker, your hold decisions move the return up or down by several percentage points, and choosing a better paytable moves it again.

How a video poker hand works

  1. Choose your stake. Many games use 1 to 5 ‘coins’ or credits; a five-coin bet often lifts the royal flush payout.
  2. Press Deal. Five cards appear face up from a freshly shuffled 52-card deck.
  3. Tap the cards you want to keep. Each shows ‘Held’.
  4. Press Draw. Unheld cards are replaced by the next cards in the same shuffled deck.
  5. Your final five-card hand is compared with the paytable and any win is credited.
  6. Start the next hand yourself; UK games can’t deal on autoplay.

The deck is not a continuous stream: it is reshuffled before each new deal. Cards you discarded don’t come back in the same hand, and nothing from the previous hand carries over. That makes every hand independent, which matters when we come to common gambling myths later.

Reading a video poker paytable: what ‘9/6’ means

Players describe video poker tables by the payouts for a full house and a flush, per coin staked. In Jacks or Better, a ‘9/6’ table pays 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush; an ‘8/5’ table pays 8 and 5. Those two numbers alone move the RTP by more than two percentage points, because full houses and flushes each land roughly once every 90 hands.

Note the royal flush row. Many games pay 250 per coin at one to four coins and 800 per coin at maximum coins. The published 99.54% assumes the maximum-coin royal; at fewer coins the return drops by around 1.4 percentage points. Online games sometimes show only one stake level, with the royal at the higher rate built in, so check the paytable in the help screen.

Video poker variants and their RTP

Dozens of variants exist, but most UK lobbies draw on a handful. The figures below are the returns for the full-pay version of each game with perfect strategy, as calculated by analysts such as Wizard of Odds’ video poker section (opens in a new tab). Many online versions use lower tables, so treat these as ceilings rather than what every game pays.

Deuces WildAll 2s are wild; three of a kind minimumFull payAbout 100.8%
Joker Poker53-card deck with one joker; kings or betterFull payAbout 100.6%

Returns above 100% look like a player advantage, but they assume error-free play on a full-pay table, which is rarely available online and rarely achieved in practice. A version paying less on just one line can drop below 98%. Our dedicated pages on Deuces Wild and Jacks or Better go through those tables line by line.

Video poker strategy basics that apply to most variants

Every variant has its own optimal strategy, ranked as a list of hands to hold in order. A few principles carry across most non-wild games and catch the biggest mistakes.

  1. Never break a paying hand to chase a bigger one, except four to a royal flush, which is worth more than a made flush or straight.
  2. Hold a low pair over a single high card, and over unsuited high cards.
  3. Don’t keep a ‘kicker’ alongside a pair in Jacks or Better; it lowers the chance of improving.
  4. Prefer four to a flush over a low pair only when the paytable rewards flushes well; check the strategy for the exact table.
  5. In wild-card games, start by counting the wild cards in your hand, because the strategy changes completely with each one.

Learning one variant properly beats dabbling in five. The gap between instinctive play and correct play in Jacks or Better is typically worth two to three percentage points, which on a long session is more than the difference between a good paytable and a poor one.

Because a royal flush lands only about once in 40,000 hands, video poker is a lower-volatility experience than most modern slots: frequent small returns, rare big hits, and no 10,000x jackpots. People who enjoy decision-making often prefer it; people looking for bonus rounds usually don’t.

UK rules for online video poker

The Gambling Commission extended its game design rules to online casino games other than slots from 17 January 2025, explicitly including house-played poker. For video poker that means each hand must be started individually, there is no autoplay or turbo dealing, and at least 5 seconds must pass from the start of one game cycle to the start of the next. The rules sit in the Commission’s Remote gambling and software technical standards (opens in a new tab); our summary of table game speed rules explains them in plain English.

You will also see your net position and session time on screen, under the net position display rule. The £5 and £2 per-spin slot stake limits are defined for reel-based slots, so video poker maximums are set by the casino. Demo play is only available once your age is verified, and winnings are not taxed for UK players.

Video poker bankroll maths with pound examples

Expected cost per hand equals stake multiplied by (100% minus RTP). On a 9/6 Jacks or Better game with near-perfect play, a £1 hand costs about 0.5p on average. Play the same game at around 600 hands an hour (the 5-second rule caps it at 720), and the expected hourly cost is about £2.76. Drop to an 8/5 table and that rises to about £16.20, before counting strategy errors.

Variance is the bigger issue for most sessions. Around 2% of the return of Jacks or Better comes from royal flushes, which you will usually not see in a session. Without one, the effective return of a short session is lower than the headline figure. A bankroll of a few hundred stakes keeps normal swings manageable; a smaller one runs out more often than the RTP implies.

Use the session clock the rules now require, and set a reality check if your casino offers one, so fast hands don’t quietly turn an hour into three.

Common myths about video poker

  • ‘The machine is due a royal.’ Each hand is dealt from a fresh shuffle; past results don’t change the next deal. This is the gambler’s fallacy.
  • ‘The game sees my holds and deals bad cards.’ Licensed games deal replacement cards from the shuffled deck as dealt; the RNG is tested by independent labs, as our RNG guide explains.
  • ‘Raising stakes after a loss improves my chances.’ Staking systems change bet sizes, not the paytable or the odds. See our betting systems explainer.
  • ‘Over-100% games mean I will profit.’ Only with flawless play over a very long run, and only on a full-pay table that is seldom offered.

Video poker and casino bonuses

Bonus terms often exclude video poker or count it at a low percentage, because skilled play gives a high return. Since 19 January 2026, wagering at UK-licensed casinos has been capped at 10x under the 10x wagering cap, but game weighting still applies. A £50 bonus at 10x needs £500 of play; at a 10% contribution, that becomes £5,000 of video poker hands.

If you want to play video poker with a bonus, check the excluded games list and the maximum bet first. Our guide on how wagering requirements work walks through the sums.

Where to play video poker in the UK

Stick to casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission and use the lobby search for ‘poker’ or the variant name, since video poker is often filed under table games or ‘other games’. Line-ups change, so check before depositing. The casino games hub links our guides to related formats, including casino card games.

Frequently asked questions

Is video poker legal in the UK?

Yes. Video poker is a casino game that UK-licensed online casinos may offer, under the same Gambling Commission licence that covers slots and table games. Players must be 18 or over and pass age verification before playing, including in demo mode. Since 17 January 2025 the game must also follow the Commission’s design rules for non-slot casino games: no autoplay and a 5-second minimum game cycle. Our page on whether online gambling is legal in the UK explains the licensing framework.

What is the best video poker game for RTP?

The highest-returning common games are full-pay Deuces Wild at about 100.8% and full-pay Joker Poker at about 100.6%, followed by 10/7 Double Bonus and 9/6 Jacks or Better. Those figures assume perfect strategy and the full-pay table, which online casinos often reduce. In practice, a 9/6 Jacks or Better game you can play accurately is usually a better choice than a complex variant you play loosely. Our guide to best odds casino games compares video poker with other games.

How do I know which video poker paytable a game uses?

Open the game’s help or paytable screen and read the payouts for a full house and a flush, per coin. In Jacks or Better, 9 and 6 is the full-pay table; 8 and 5 or lower means a reduced return. Also check whether the royal flush pays more at maximum coins. Many UK games also print the theoretical RTP in the rules panel. Our guide to reading casino game help screens shows where this information usually sits.

Is video poker better than slots?

Video poker usually has a higher potential return than slots, often above 99% with good play, and your decisions affect the result. Slots tend to have bigger top prizes, bonus features and higher volatility, but the RTP is fixed by the game. Which is ‘better’ depends on what you enjoy; both cost money over time. If you like making choices and steady play, video poker suits; if you want features, slots do. Our house edge explainer compares the costs.

Can you win at video poker in the long run?

In practice, almost nobody does. A few full-pay tables return slightly over 100% with flawless play, but online versions often use lower paytables, and small strategy errors easily remove any theoretical edge. Royal flushes, which make up a meaningful share of the return, appear only about once in 40,000 hands. Treat video poker as entertainment with a cost, not as income. Our answer to can you win money at online casinos explains why the house keeps its edge.

Does video poker use a real deck of cards?

It uses a virtual 52-card deck, or 53 cards in Joker Poker, shuffled by a random number generator before every deal. The five cards you receive and any replacements come from that same shuffled deck, so the probabilities match a physical deck. UK-licensed games have their RNGs tested by approved labs before release. Our guide to how casino games are tested explains the certification process.

Why is there a delay between video poker hands?

Since 17 January 2025, UK rules require at least 5 seconds from the start of one game cycle to the start of the next in non-slot casino games, including house-played poker. Turbo modes and autoplay are not allowed, so you deal each hand yourself. The aim is to slow the pace of play and give you time to think about spending. Our page on table game speed rules sets out the requirement and the date it started.

Do slot stake limits apply to video poker?

The £5 per spin limit for adults aged 25 and over, and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, is defined for online slots, meaning reel-based casino games. Video poker deals cards rather than spinning reels, so its maximum stake is set by the casino and the game rather than by that rule. Stakes can still be modest by design. Check the game’s limits before playing. Our page on the £2 slot stake limit explains who the lower limit covers.

Should I always bet maximum coins in video poker?

Only if the game pays a bigger royal flush at maximum coins and the maximum fits your budget. In many classic tables the royal pays 250 per coin at one to four coins but 800 per coin at five, which adds about 1.4 percentage points to the return. If five coins is more than you’re comfortable risking, choose a smaller coin size rather than playing short. Our bankroll glossary entry explains how stake size relates to your budget.

Does video poker count towards wagering requirements?

Often it counts at a reduced rate, or not at all, because good players can achieve a high return. Bonus terms list excluded games and weighting percentages. Since 19 January 2026 wagering in Great Britain is capped at 10x, so a £20 bonus needs at most £200 of play, but a 10% weighting would turn that into £2,000 of video poker stakes. Read the terms before you opt in. Our game weighting guide shows how to calculate it.

What is the hit frequency in video poker?

Hit frequency is the share of hands that return something, and in 9/6 Jacks or Better it is roughly 45%. Many of those hits only return your stake, such as a pair of jacks paying 1 for 1, so a ‘win’ often leaves you level. Deuces Wild has a similar hit rate but a different mix of payouts. Hit frequency helps you judge how bumpy a session feels. Our glossary entry on hit frequency explains the term.
