Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker is a quick house-banked game where you and the dealer each get three cards. You can back your hand with an Ante and then Play, bet on your hand alone with Pair Plus, or both. Playing any hand of queen-6-4 or better keeps the Ante house edge at about 3.37%. Rules, pay tables and costs follow, checked 20 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Two separate games in one: Ante and Play against the dealer, and Pair Plus on your own three cards.
  • The dealer needs queen-high to qualify; if not, the Ante pays 1:1 and the Play bet is returned.
  • Raise with queen-6-4 or better and fold anything lower; that keeps the Ante edge near 3.37%.
  • Pair Plus cost depends on the flush payout: about 2.32% at 4:1 and about 7.28% at 3:1.

What Three Card Poker is

This game packs a poker-style showdown into a few seconds. Each hand uses just three cards, so rankings are different from five-card poker and the game moves quickly. It is played against the house, not other players, and it effectively combines two games: an Ante and Play contest in which you try to beat the dealer, and a Pair Plus bet that pays on the strength of your own cards whatever the dealer holds.

You will find RNG and live versions in UK lobbies; Evolution’s live table, for instance, adds an optional Six Card Bonus. For the wider family of house-banked poker, see Casino Hold’em and Caribbean Stud Poker, or browse all casino card games and the main games hub.

Three Card Poker hand rankings and probabilities

With only three cards, a straight is harder to make than a flush, so it ranks higher. That is the key difference from standard poker.

Hand rankings with three cards, highest first (52-card deck)

Straight flush8-9-10 of heartsAbout 0.22%
Three of a kindThree jacksAbout 0.24%

FlushThree clubs, not in sequenceAbout 4.96%
PairTwo queens and a 3About 16.94%

These probabilities come from the Wizard of Odds Three Card Poker analysis (opens in a new tab). Three of a kind is slightly more common than a straight flush, which is why it ranks just below it.

How to play Three Card Poker, step by step

  1. Place an Ante, a Pair Plus bet, or both. Live tables may also offer a Six Card Bonus.
  2. You receive three cards face up; the dealer’s three are face down.
  3. If you placed an Ante, choose to fold (losing the Ante) or play by adding a Play bet equal to the Ante.
  4. Pair Plus is settled on your hand alone and doesn’t depend on folding or the dealer.
  5. The dealer reveals. If the dealer has less than queen-high, they don’t qualify.
  6. Hands are compared and bets settled; the Ante Bonus is paid on a straight or better regardless of the dealer’s hand.

On top of that, the Ante Bonus pays extra on a strong hand even when you lose to the dealer. The most common table pays 1:1 for a straight, 4:1 for three of a kind and 5:1 for a straight flush, which gives the Ante a house edge of about 3.37%. Tables paying 3:1 on trips and 4:1 on a straight flush push it to about 3.83%.

Pair Plus bet: pay tables and house edge

Pair Plus pays if your three cards make a pair or better. The dealer’s hand is irrelevant. The flush payout is what makes or breaks its value.

Flush4:13:1

One step on the flush line more than triples the cost. Over 100 hands at £5, Table A would be expected to cost about £11.60 and Table B about £36.40. Some versions also add a mini royal (A-K-Q suited) payout or a Six Card Bonus that uses your three cards plus the dealer’s; Evolution says its Pair Plus and Six Card Bonus pay up to 1,000 to 1. The Six Card Bonus usually carries a higher house edge than either main bet. See our pair plus definition for a quick summary.

Queen-6-4: the optimal Three Card Poker strategy

There is only one decision in the Ante game: play or fold. The optimal rule is short.

  1. Play any pair or better.
  2. Play any king-high or ace-high hand.
  3. With queen-high, play if your next card is a 6 or higher, and if it’s exactly a 6, play when your third card is 4 or higher. That is Q-6-4 or better.
  4. Fold anything weaker, such as Q-6-3, Q-5-4 or jack-high.

Why Q-6-4? Raising on Q-6-3 costs slightly more on average than folding; raising on Q-6-4 costs slightly less. Simpler rules cost more: playing any queen-high gives an edge of about 3.45%, and playing every hand pushes it to about 7.65%. The expected value entry explains how those comparisons are made.

Three Card Poker house edge, element of risk and real costs

The Ante house edge of 3.37% is measured against the Ante. Because you sometimes add a Play bet, the edge as a share of all money wagered, called the element of risk, is lower at about 2.01%. Both describe the same game.

Pair Plus only, flush 3:1£5About £36.40

These are averages over many hands; a single session can be well ahead or well behind. Its quick rounds mean more hands per hour, so the hourly cost can exceed slower table games even at similar edges. For comparisons, see lowest house edge games and our house edge guide.

Three worked Three Card Poker hands

Each hand uses a £5 Ante and £5 Pair Plus on the 1/4/5 Ante Bonus and 40/30/6/3/1 Pair Plus tables.

  • Pair of eights vs dealer jack-high. You play (+£5 Play). The dealer doesn’t qualify, so the Ante pays £5 and Play is returned. Pair Plus pays 1:1, another £5. Net +£10.
  • Straight vs dealer three of a kind. You play. The dealer qualifies and wins, so you lose the £5 Ante and £5 Play. But the Ante Bonus pays 1:1 on your straight (+£5) and Pair Plus pays 6:1 (+£30). Net +£25.
  • Queen-5-3. Below Q-6-4, so you fold and lose the £5 Ante. Pair Plus loses too. Net −£10.

UK rules that apply to Three Card Poker

The Gambling Commission’s rules for non-slot online casino games, in force since 17 January 2025, name house-played poker such as Three Card Poker among the games covered. Each game cycle must last at least 5 seconds, autoplay is banned, you can’t play multiple games at once, and your net position and session time must be displayed. Peer-to-peer poker is excluded. The Commission sets this out in its speed of play decision (opens in a new tab), and our table game speed rules page explains it.

Other rules apply as with any casino game: you must be 18 and verified before play, including demo play; credit cards can’t be used; and you are prompted to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Our UK casino rules summary lists them with dates.

Common myths about Three Card Poker

“Mimic the dealer and play queen-high or better”

Close, but it costs more than Q-6-4: about 3.45% against 3.37%.

“Pair Plus is always the better bet”

Only on a generous table. At 3:1 for a flush, Pair Plus costs more than twice as much as the Ante game.

“A hot dealer will keep winning”

Each hand is dealt from a freshly shuffled deck. Streaks are normal and predict nothing; our gambler’s fallacy guide explains why.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Three Card Poker?

Place an Ante, a Pair Plus bet or both. You and the dealer each get three cards. If you bet the Ante, you either fold and lose it, or play by adding an equal Play bet. The dealer needs queen-high to qualify; if they don’t, your Ante pays 1:1 and Play is returned. If they qualify, the higher hand wins both bets. Pair Plus pays on your hand alone, whatever the dealer has. Our casino card games page compares it with other house-banked card games.

What is the best strategy for Three Card Poker?

Play any hand of queen-6-4 or better and fold anything lower. That means playing every pair, every king-high and ace-high hand, and queen-high hands where the second card is above 6, or exactly 6 with a third card of 4 or more. This keeps the Ante house edge at about 3.37% on the common 1/4/5 Ante Bonus table. Simpler rules, like playing any queen, cost slightly more. Strategy can’t remove the edge. Our house edge explainer covers why optimal play still loses over time.

What is the house edge on Three Card Poker?

About 3.37% of the Ante with optimal play on the common Ante Bonus table, or about 2.01% of all money wagered once Play bets are included. Pair Plus varies with its pay table: about 2.32% when a flush pays 4:1 and about 7.28% when it pays 3:1. Combining both bets on standard tables gives roughly 5.3%. Check the RTP on your table’s help screen. Our best odds casino games guide and the question which casino games have the best odds put these figures in context.

Is Pair Plus a good bet?

It depends on the pay table. Pair Plus pays on your three cards alone, so you don’t need to beat the dealer. With a 4:1 payout on a flush, the house edge is about 2.32%, cheaper than the Ante game. With 3:1 on a flush, the edge jumps to about 7.28%, more than double the Ante. Always check the flush line before betting, and avoid adding extra side bets such as the Six Card Bonus if keeping costs down matters to you. The pair plus and side bet entries explain both.

Why does a straight beat a flush in Three Card Poker?

Because with only three cards a straight is rarer than a flush. There are 720 three-card straights in a 52-card deck against 1,096 flushes, so straights occur about 3.26% of the time and flushes about 4.96%. Poker rankings always put rarer hands higher, which reverses the usual five-card order. Three of a kind is also rarer than a straight, and the straight flush is rarest of all. Our royal flush entry and the Casino Hold’em page show the standard five-card rankings for comparison.

What happens if the dealer doesn’t qualify?

If the dealer’s hand is lower than queen-high, the dealer doesn’t qualify. Your Ante is paid at 1:1 and your Play bet is returned, regardless of how strong or weak your own hand is. Any Ante Bonus for a straight or better is still paid, and Pair Plus is settled separately on your cards. Folding forfeits the Ante even if the dealer would not have qualified, which is why folding too much is costly. See Caribbean Stud Poker for a game with a stricter qualifying hand.

Can I play Three Card Poker live?

Yes. Evolution supplies a live Three Card Poker table to UK-licensed casinos, with the queen-high qualifier, an Ante Bonus for a straight or better, and optional Pair Plus and Six Card Bonus bets paying up to 1,000 to 1. A real dealer deals from a physical deck, and you choose to play or fold within a timer. RNG versions are also common and usually allow lower stakes. The pay tables can differ, so read the help screen. Our live casino page explains how live studio games run.

Does the UK 5-second rule apply to Three Card Poker?

Yes. The Gambling Commission’s rules for non-slot online casino games, in force since 17 January 2025, specifically include house-played poker such as Three Card Poker. RNG versions must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, autoplay is banned, and the game must show your net position and time played. Live tables already run slower than that, but the display rules apply. Our game design rules page sets out every requirement and when it started.

How much do I need to play Three Card Poker?

Minimum stakes vary by table, and RNG versions usually accept lower bets than live ones. Remember that playing a hand doubles your Ante, so a £5 Ante risks £10 on most hands you play, plus any Pair Plus bet. With £5 on the Ante and £5 on Pair Plus, a single hand can cost up to £15. Set a session budget before you start, use your casino’s deposit limits, and stop when it is used. Our guides to setting a gambling budget and table limits help.
