Pair Plus meaning

Pair Plus meaning, in Three Card Poker: it is a bet that your own three cards will make a pair or better, paid from a fixed paytable whatever the dealer holds. You don't need to beat the dealer, and the dealer doesn't need to qualify. It's simple, but the paytable decides the house edge, which can be more than three times higher on one version than another.

Key takeaways

  • Pair Plus pays if your three cards make a pair or better; the dealer's hand is irrelevant.
  • About 25.6% of three-card hands are a pair or better, so roughly three in four Pair Plus bets lose.
  • On the common 1-4-6-30-40 paytable the house edge is about 2.3%; cutting the flush to 3 to 1 raises it to about 7.3%.
  • Check the paytable in the help screen before you play; it's the single biggest factor in the bet's cost.

Pair Plus meaning in Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker offers two main wagers. Ante-Play pits your hand against the dealer's: you place an ante, look at your cards, then fold or add an equal play bet. Pair Plus ignores the dealer completely: it pays if your three cards form a pair, flush, straight, three of a kind or straight flush, at fixed odds.

You can usually play Pair Plus on its own or alongside the ante. Many players think of it as a side bet, although some tables treat it as a main bet with its own minimum. Either way, it is settled as soon as your cards are shown.

Three-card hand rankings and odds

Three-card hands rank differently from five-card poker: a straight beats a flush, because with only three cards a straight is rarer. There are 22,100 possible three-card hands from a 52-card deck.

Add up the winning hands and you get 5,660 of 22,100, about 25.6%. Roughly three Pair Plus bets in four lose.

Pair Plus house edge by paytable

Because the bet's odds are fixed, the paytable sets the house edge exactly. Studios and casinos choose between several versions.

Pair Plus paytables compared (per £1 staked)
Paytable (straight flush / trips / straight / flush / pair)House edgeExpected loss per £10
40 / 30 / 6 / 4 / 1about 2.32%about 23p
40 / 30 / 6 / 3 / 1about 7.28%about 73p

The only difference between those two rows is the flush payout, 4 to 1 or 3 to 1, yet the edge triples. That's why reading the paytable matters more than anything else about this bet. The Wizard of Odds Three Card Poker guide (opens in a new tab) lists further paytables and their returns. For comparison, the ante-play bet with correct strategy has a house edge of about 3.4% per ante.

Worked example: £5 on Pair Plus

  1. Place £5 on Pair Plus (with or without an ante).
  2. The game deals your three cards: 7♠ 7♦ K♣, a pair.
  3. Pair pays 1 to 1: you win £5 and keep your £5 stake.
  4. Next round you get 4♥ 9♥ Q♥, a flush. On a 4 to 1 table you win £20; on a 3 to 1 table, £15.
  5. Next round you get A♣ 8♦ 3♠, high card, and lose £5.

Over 100 rounds at £5, you'd stake £500 in total. On the 2.32% paytable the expected cost is about £11.60; on the 7.28% table it is about £36.40. Individual sessions will vary widely around those figures, as standard deviation explains.

Is there a Pair Plus strategy?

No. Pair Plus involves no decisions after the bet is placed, so the only choices that affect your cost are which paytable you play and how much you stake. Betting systems that raise stakes after losses don't change the edge; our betting systems guide explains why. Ante-Play, by contrast, has a simple strategy (play with Queen-6-4 or better), covered on our Three Card Poker page.

Pair Plus and UK rules

House-played poker such as Three Card Poker counts as a non-slot casino game under the Commission's rules. Since 17 January 2025, RNG versions at UK-licensed casinos must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle and can't offer autoplay, as the Commission's speed of play consultation response (opens in a new tab) records; our table game speed rules page has the dates. The £5 and £2 online stake limits apply to slots, not to Pair Plus, so stakes follow the table limits. You must be 18 or over, and since 31 October 2025 you'll be prompted to set a financial limit before your first deposit; see deposit limit rules.

  • Ante: the opening bet in Ante-Play.
  • Royal flush: the top five-card hand, relevant to some bonus side bets.
  • Hole card: face-down cards, including the dealer's in Three Card Poker.
  • Expected value: the average result per bet, set by the paytable.

Frequently asked questions

What does Pair Plus mean in Three Card Poker?

It means a bet that your three cards will make a pair or better. It's paid from a fixed paytable regardless of the dealer's hand, so you can win Pair Plus even when the dealer beats you on the ante, and lose it even when you beat the dealer. Winning hands are a pair, flush, straight, three of a kind or straight flush. Our Three Card Poker page explains the full game, and the side bet definition covers similar wagers.

What are the odds of winning Pair Plus?

About 25.6% per hand, or roughly one in four. A pair alone accounts for about 16.9%, a flush about 5%, a straight about 3.3%, and three of a kind and straight flushes about 0.2% each. The other 74.4% of hands are high-card hands and lose. Higher-paying hands are rare, so most wins are even-money pairs. Our casino odds guide and best odds casino games page put these figures in context.

What is the house edge on Pair Plus?

It depends entirely on the paytable. On the common 40-30-6-4-1 version, paying 4 to 1 on a flush, the house edge is about 2.32%. On a version paying 3 to 1 on a flush, it rises to about 7.28%. Other paytables sit between or beyond those. Check the help screen before you play, as the live figure is what counts. Our house edge guide and lowest house edge games explain how to compare bets.

Can I play Pair Plus without the ante?

At many tables, yes: Pair Plus can be played as a standalone bet, settled on your three cards alone. Some tables require an ante, or set separate minimums for each bet, so check the table rules in the help screen. Playing Pair Plus alone removes the fold-or-play decision, but the house edge is set by the paytable either way. Our guide to reading game help screens and the ante definition explain the options.

Does the dealer need to qualify for Pair Plus to pay?

No. The dealer-qualifying rule, Queen-high or better in standard Three Card Poker, only affects the Ante-Play bets. Pair Plus is paid on your hand alone, so a pair pays even if the dealer doesn't qualify or has a better hand. This independence is the bet's main appeal, but it also means there's nothing you can do to improve your chances. Our table games guide compares similar bets across games, and casino card games covers the wider family.

Is Pair Plus a good bet?

It's a simple bet with a moderate house edge on the best paytable and a high one on the worst. On the 2.32% version, £100 of Pair Plus bets costs about £2.32 on average; on the 7.28% version, about £7.28. Neither version has positive expected value, and three hands in four lose. If you enjoy it, choose the better paytable and keep stakes within your budget. The gambling budget guide and expected value definition can help you plan.

Is Pair Plus available in live casinos?

Yes, Pair Plus appears in live dealer Three Card Poker as well as RNG versions, although the exact paytable and limits depend on the studio and table. In live games, a real dealer deals from a real deck on camera, while RNG games use a tested random number generator. Rules on game speed and autoplay apply to RNG versions in Great Britain. Check the live lobby and the help screen for the table you choose. Our live casino poker and live casino pages describe the formats.
