Retrigger meaning: a retrigger happens when a slot's bonus feature, usually free spins, is extended from inside the feature itself, typically by landing the trigger symbols again. It adds more spins (and sometimes bigger multipliers) to a round already in progress, without any extra stake from you.
A retrigger adds spins or upgrades to a feature that is already running.
Rules vary: some games cap retriggers, others limit the round with a max win.
Retriggers are already counted in the game's RTP; they aren't a bonus on top.
In the UK the whole feature belongs to one game cycle at your original stake.

Retrigger meaning and how it differs from a trigger
A feature trigger takes you from the base game into a bonus. A retrigger happens once you're already in it: the game's rules allow the same or a similar event to add more of the feature. The classic case is free spins: land three scatters during the round and another batch of spins is added to the counter.
Retriggers can take other shapes too. Some games add a fixed number of spins for each extra scatter; some upgrade the round (a higher multiplier, more sticky wilds); in hold and win rounds, every new coin symbol resets the respin counter, which works the same way. Because the feature's outcome sits inside one paid spin, a retrigger never takes a fresh stake from your balance.

Big Bass Bonanza, the game PlayOJO's welcome spins are played on, uses a collection approach: fisherman wilds collected in free spins can add extra spins and raise the multiplier. Our guides to slot features and multipliers cover these mechanics in detail.
Worked example: how much a retrigger adds on average
Say a feature awards 10 free spins, and each batch of 10 has a 20% chance of retriggering another 10, which can itself retrigger. The average total is 10 ÷ (1 − 0.2) = 12.5 spins. Most features (80%) end at 10 spins; about 16% reach 20; about 3% reach 30; a small fraction go further. The average sits well above what most players actually see.
In pounds at a 20p stake, if each free spin returns 40p on average, the typical 10-spin feature is worth about £4, and the average feature, retriggers included, about £5. Those figures are illustrative: real games publish rules, not retrigger rates. The point is that retriggers are already built into the game's RTP; they are part of how the advertised return is reached, not extra value on top. Our entry on expected value shows the method.
Retrigger caps and max win limits
Many games cap retriggers, for example 'free spins can be retriggered up to a maximum of 50 spins' or 'once per feature'. Others allow unlimited retriggers in principle but end the feature once a max win, expressed as a multiple of stake, is reached. Our slot data lists Big Bass Bonanza's maximum win as 2,100x stake, so at 10p a spin a round could not pay more than £210 however many retriggers landed. The max win guide explains how caps work.
Offer terms can add a separate cap on free spin winnings. Check both the game rules and the offer terms; our free spins with no max win page explains the difference.
Retriggers and UK rules
Under the stake limits, a game cycle runs from the start of a game until all stakes are lost or all winnings delivered, according to the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). A retriggered feature is part of the cycle begun by the spin that started it, so it plays at your original stake, which can't exceed £5 (25+) or £2 (18 to 24).
The Remote gambling and software technical standards (opens in a new tab) also govern how games present results. Since 31 October 2021, a slot shouldn't celebrate a return equal to or less than your stake, so a long, retriggered feature that pays back less than you staked to trigger it shouldn't be dressed up with win fanfare. Our game design rules page lists every related rule.
Why retriggers matter (and why to keep perspective)
Retriggers shape how a slot feels. Games where big results depend on chains of retriggers are usually high in volatility: most features end small and a few run very long. That means typical sessions differ sharply from the average, and a memorable long feature can make a game feel more generous than its RTP. Judge a game by its published RTP and volatility rather than by a single feature, and use limits to keep sessions within budget.

Frequently asked questions
What does retrigger mean in slots?
A retrigger is when a slot's bonus feature is extended from inside the feature, usually by landing the trigger symbols again during free spins. It adds more spins, or upgrades the round with higher multipliers or extra wilds, without taking any new stake from your balance. Whether a game can retrigger, and how often, is set out in its rules. Our feature trigger entry explains how the feature starts in the first place and the main trigger types.
How do you retrigger free spins?
You can't choose to; it depends on the random result of each free spin. Most games retrigger when three or more scatter symbols land during the round, adding a set number of spins. Others add spins per special symbol or after a collection meter fills. Nothing you do, such as changing stake or timing, makes a retrigger more likely. Check the game's help screen for the exact rule. Our guide to how free spins work covers both in-game and offer spins.
Is there a limit to how many times free spins can retrigger?
Often, yes. Many games cap the number of retriggers or the total spins available in one feature, and others end the feature once a maximum win is reached. Some advertise unlimited retriggers, but the max win still stops the round in practice. Big Bass Bonanza, for example, lists a maximum win of 2,100x stake in our slot data. The rules page always states any limit. Our max win entry explains how those caps are expressed and applied.
Do retriggers make a slot pay more?
No. Retriggers are part of the game's design and are already included in its published RTP. A game with frequent retriggers simply distributes its return differently, often with many small features and a few very long ones, rather than paying more overall. Over many spins you should expect the published RTP and, with it, a loss on average. Our RTP glossary entry explains what the figure means and why short sessions stray from it.
Do retriggered spins use the same stake?
Yes. All spins in a feature, including retriggered ones, play at the stake of the spin that started the feature. Under UK rules the whole feature belongs to one game cycle, so its stake must already be within the £5 limit for players aged 25 and over or the £2 limit for players aged 18 to 24. You can't raise or lower the stake mid-feature. Our page on the £5 slot stake limit explains how a game cycle is defined.
Can offer free spins retrigger?
Usually, yes. If you trigger a free spins feature while using spins from a casino offer, the feature and any retriggers play out at the offer's spin value, such as 10p. Winnings from them are treated as free spin winnings under the offer terms. With no-wagering offers like Coral's and PlayOJO's, those winnings carry no playthrough requirement, though game max wins still apply. Our guide to free spins winnings covers how different offers credit them and the caps to look for.
Why do some features never seem to retrigger?
Because retriggers are usually rare by design, and some features can't retrigger at all. A game might give, say, a one-in-several chance per feature, so many features in a row will end without one. That is normal variance, not a sign the game is cold or rigged. If a game states 'cannot be retriggered', it never will. Our page how often do slots pay out? explains why short runs of results tell you little.
