Monzo gambling: payments and blocks

Monzo gambling is allowed: a Monzo debit card, or a Monzo account through Pay by Bank, can fund a UK-licensed casino, and winnings can be paid back to it. Monzo also has a gambling block you can switch on in the app. This page covers both sides, with partner facts checked on 20 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • A Monzo card is a Mastercard debit card, so it works wherever a UK casino accepts Mastercard debit.
  • Coral’s Pay by Bank help page lists Monzo among supported banks (checked 20 October 2026).
  • Visa Fast Funds payout times don’t apply to a Monzo card, because it isn’t a Visa card.
  • The Monzo gambling block stops card payments to gambling merchants; switching it off means contacting Monzo first.
  • 18+. Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ welcome offers exclude certain debit cards, so check the terms before depositing.

Can you use Monzo for gambling at UK casinos?

Yes. Monzo gambling is legal for adults in Great Britain, and Monzo doesn’t ban its customers from paying licensed casinos. Your Monzo card is a Mastercard debit card, so any casino that takes Mastercard debit should accept it, and many UK casino payment methods can be fed from a Monzo balance in other ways, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay or a bank-to-bank payment.

What makes Monzo different from an older high-street account is the control it puts in the app. You can see each casino payment the moment it happens, sort spending into categories, and switch on a gambling block that declines card payments to betting and casino merchants. The block is covered in detail further down, because for many people it is the main reason they search for Monzo and gambling in the first place.

Two things Monzo can’t change: casinos must be licensed by the Gambling Commission to take your money legally in Great Britain, and you must be 18 or over and pass age and identity checks before you deposit or play.

Four ways to pay a casino from a Monzo account

A casino cashier rarely shows a button labelled ‘Monzo’. Instead you pick a method that draws on your Monzo money. The route you choose matters for welcome offers, for bank gambling blocks and for how winnings come back.

Monzo-funded payment routes at UK casinos
RouteHow the money movesPoints to know
Monzo Mastercard debit cardCard payment authorised in the Monzo appCaught by the Monzo gambling block; some welcome offers exclude certain debit cards

E-wallet topped up from MonzoMonzo pays PayPal or another wallet, which pays the casinoE-wallet deposits are excluded from Coral’s and Ladbrokes’ welcome offers

If you want the simplest record, a direct card payment keeps every casino transaction visible in one place in Monzo. A Pay by Bank deposit avoids typing card numbers into a cashier, while an e-wallet adds a layer between your bank and the casino but usually costs you the welcome offer.

Which partner casinos accept Monzo-funded payments

No casino publishes a ‘Monzo accepted’ list, so the table below maps what each partner’s own pages say about the methods a Monzo customer can use. Where a fact isn’t published, we say so rather than guess.

Coral’s Pay by Bank help page (opens in a new tab) lists Monzo alongside Starling, Revolut and the big high-street banks, and it states a £5 minimum. Under their general payment rules, Coral and Ladbrokes also cap a single UK deposit at £2,000 and allow up to three active payment methods in a rolling 30 days. For brand-by-brand detail see Coral payment methods and Ladbrokes payment methods.

How to deposit at an online casino with Monzo

The card route is the one most Monzo customers use. The steps below follow the order a UK cashier puts you through, including the financial limit prompt that has applied before a first deposit since 31 October 2025.

  1. Open an account at a UK-licensed casino and complete the identity checks; you can’t deposit until your age is confirmed.
  2. When prompted, set a deposit limit. Since 31 October 2025 the limit prompt is the default and skipping it has to be confirmed.
  3. Open the cashier, choose Mastercard or debit card, and enter the 16-digit number, expiry date and security code from your Monzo card (or the virtual card details in the app).
  4. Approve the payment in the Monzo app if it asks you to confirm it’s you.
  5. Check the balance in the casino and the matching line in your Monzo feed; they should show the same amount, with no fee from Coral or Ladbrokes.

For a bank-to-bank deposit instead, choose Pay by Bank, select Monzo from the bank list and approve the payment in the Monzo app; Coral’s help page says you are then sent back to the cashier with a success message. The general guide to casino deposits walks through other methods.

Getting casino winnings back into Monzo

Casinos generally pay winnings back to the method you deposited with, a habit known as closed-loop payments. If you deposited with your Monzo card, expect the casino to refund to that card first; if you used Pay by Bank, Coral’s help page lists Pay by Bank as a withdrawal option too.

Here is a worked example. Say you deposited £20 by Monzo card and £10 through PayPal in the same month, then ask to withdraw £65. A closed-loop casino would typically return £10 to PayPal and the remaining £55 to your Monzo card, so your money arrives in two places on possibly different days. Using one method keeps it simpler.

One detail often missed: Coral and Ladbrokes advertise Visa Fast Funds withdrawals that typically land within four hours of approval. A Monzo card runs on Mastercard, so that route doesn’t apply. Timings are the operators’ own and can vary; our guide to how long casino withdrawals take explains the approval stage that sits in front of every payout.

The Monzo gambling block: what it stops

Monzo launched its gambling block on 19 June 2018. Every card payment carries a merchant code describing the type of business, and when the block is on Monzo declines card payments where that code marks the merchant as gambling: bookmakers, online casinos, bingo and similar, online or in person.

Monzo is candid that it isn’t watertight. Its help pages say the block applies to card payments, and that if a merchant’s code is wrong the payment could still go through. The Gambling Commission’s page on blocking gambling payments with your bank (opens in a new tab) lists Monzo among the banks offering a block.

  • Covered: card payments to merchants coded as gambling, including through Apple Pay or Google Pay on the same card.
  • Not described as covered: Pay by Bank transfers, ordinary bank transfers, and money already moved into an e-wallet.
  • Unaffected: winnings coming back into your account.

To switch the block on, open the Monzo app and look for the gambling block setting in your card or account controls; the exact menu wording changes between app versions.

Turning off Monzo’s gambling block

Switching the block on takes seconds. Switching it off is deliberately slower. According to the Gambling Commission, Monzo customers must contact customer support to lift the block, and Monzo’s team will ask whether anything has changed since you turned it on. Monzo’s 2018 launch announcement described a 48-hour wait after that conversation before the block could be lifted; its newer help pages describe a cooldown period, so check the app for the current wording.

That pause is the point. Urges to gamble often fade within hours, and a block that can be undone at 2am in two taps would offer little protection. If you find yourself wanting the block off, that’s a good moment to talk to the free National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 or read our page on signs of problem gambling.

A bank block works best alongside other tools. GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) excludes you from every GB-licensed gambling website and app for six months to five years, and blocking software stops gambling sites loading on your devices.

Do Monzo deposits qualify for casino welcome offers?

Usually, but read the payment exclusions first. Coral’s offer (bet £10 on slots, get 100 free spins; 18+, new players, runs 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027) excludes Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and ‘certain debit cards’. Ladbrokes’ offer (spend £10 on slots for 50 free spins a day for 10 days, up to 500) excludes prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers. Casumo’s 50% match up to £100 says payment restrictions apply.

The terms don’t say which debit cards are excluded, so we can’t confirm a Monzo card qualifies. Ask the casino’s support before depositing if the offer matters to you. The maths, if it does qualify: Coral’s 100 spins at 10p are £10 of spins, with no wagering on winnings; Ladbrokes’ maximum 500 spins at 10p are £50 of spins over 10 days; Casumo’s £20 deposit earns a £10 bonus, which must be wagered 10 times (£100 of play) within 7 days.

Spins expire, so claim them within the window: Coral gives 48 hours to accept and 7 days to use, and Ladbrokes asks you to claim before 23:59 each day. Our page on debit card casino bonuses covers card-specific exclusions in more depth.

UK rules that affect Monzo gambling payments

Several rules sit behind every Monzo casino payment. The credit card ban has stopped licensed operators accepting credit cards since 14 April 2020, which is why a casino will only take your Monzo debit card or bank account. Since 28 February 2025, operators must run a financial vulnerability check on public records such as bankruptcy and county court judgments once your deposits minus withdrawals pass £150 in a rolling 30 days.

The Commission’s guidance on gambling with a credit card (opens in a new tab) also says e-wallets should make sure your money wasn’t loaded from a credit card. More on these changes sits in our feed of latest casino payment rules.

Is using Monzo for gambling safe?

From a payments point of view, yes, provided the casino is licensed. Your card number is protected by Monzo’s in-app approvals and the option to freeze the card instantly, and Pay by Bank deposits are approved inside the Monzo app rather than by sharing card details. Check any site on the Gambling Commission public register before depositing.

The bigger safety question is spending. Real-time notifications make losses hard to ignore, which helps some people and stings for others. Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and the house edge means losses are likely over time. Set a casino deposit limit as well as any Monzo budget so the brake works at both ends.

Frequently asked questions

Does Monzo allow gambling?

Yes, Monzo lets adult customers pay UK-licensed gambling sites with its Mastercard debit card or through Pay by Bank. It doesn’t block gambling by default; the gambling block is optional and you switch it on yourself in the app. Casinos still have to confirm your age and identity before you deposit, and every UK-licensed site must refuse credit cards. If you’d like Monzo to stop gambling payments for you, the block declines card payments to merchants coded as gambling. See our explainer on bank gambling blocks for how other banks compare.

Why was my Monzo card declined at a casino?

The most common reason is that your Monzo gambling block is switched on, since it declines card payments to merchants coded as gambling. Other causes include a frozen card, a casino that doesn’t take Mastercard, a deposit above the casino’s limit (Coral and Ladbrokes cap a single UK deposit at £2,000), or a fourth payment method when the site allows three active ones in 30 days. Check the Monzo app for the reason shown, then the casino cashier. Our page on Mastercard casinos covers network-specific issues.

How do I turn off the Monzo gambling block?

You can’t switch it off instantly; you need to contact Monzo support first. The Gambling Commission says Monzo’s team will ask whether your situation has changed since you turned the block on. Monzo’s launch announcement in 2018 described a 48-hour wait after that conversation, and its newer help pages describe a cooldown, so the app shows the current process. If you’re thinking about lifting it to gamble, consider calling the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 first. Our guide to taking a break from gambling may help.

Does the Monzo gambling block stop Pay by Bank casino deposits?

Not as described by Monzo, which says the block applies to card payments. A Pay by Bank deposit is a bank-to-bank transfer that you approve in the Monzo app rather than a card payment, so it isn’t identified by a merchant card code in the same way. If you rely on the block to stop gambling, add GAMSTOP and device-level blocking software so other routes are covered too. Read more about how open banking casino payments work and where blocks can miss them.

Can I withdraw casino winnings to Monzo?

Yes, as long as you deposited with your Monzo card or account, because casinos generally pay back to the method you used. Both Coral and Ladbrokes publish Fast Bank Transfer withdrawals as taking 2 to 4 business days once approved, with a £5 minimum and no fee. Casumo publishes up to 2 days for cards and up to 5 days for bank payouts after approval. Every payout goes through the casino’s review first, which adds time. Our guide to withdrawing casino winnings explains each stage.

Is Monzo good for casino withdrawals?

It’s reliable, though not the quickest route at every casino. Visa Fast Funds payouts at Coral and Ladbrokes typically arrive up to four hours after approval, but a Monzo card runs on Mastercard so that option doesn’t apply. At Casumo, e-wallets such as PayPal and Skrill are paid instantly after approval, whereas a card payout takes up to 2 days. Monzo’s strength is visibility: you see the money land straight away in the app. Compare routes in our fastest withdrawal methods guide.

Will a Monzo deposit get me a casino welcome bonus?

Possibly, but no partner confirms it in writing. Coral’s free spins offer excludes ‘certain debit cards’ without naming them, Ladbrokes excludes prepaid cards and e-wallets but not debit cards by name, and Casumo says payment restrictions apply. Ask support before depositing if the offer is important to you. If it does qualify, Coral’s 100 spins at 10p are worth £10 and have no wagering on winnings; 18+, terms apply. The latest welcome offers page lists every current partner offer with dates.

Can I use a Monzo virtual card at an online casino?

Monzo virtual card details are card details like any other, so a casino cashier taking Mastercard debit should accept them, subject to the casino’s own checks. Remember that winnings typically return to the card you deposited with, so don’t delete a virtual card while a withdrawal could still be paid to it. The gambling block applies to card payments, which would include a virtual card on the same account. Our debit card casinos page explains how card payments work in the cashier.

Is it legal to gamble with Monzo in the UK?

Yes. It’s legal for adults aged 18 and over to gamble online in Great Britain at sites licensed by the Gambling Commission, and paying with a debit card or bank account is allowed. What isn’t allowed is gambling on credit: licensed operators have been barred from taking credit cards since 14 April 2020. Northern Ireland is outside the Gambling Act 2005, and some offers exclude it. See is online gambling legal in the UK for the full legal picture.

Does Monzo charge fees for gambling transactions?

Casino deposits from a Monzo card in pounds are ordinary card payments, and Coral and Ladbrokes state they charge no withdrawal fees. Casumo charges £3 on withdrawals under £10, so withdrawing £10 or more avoids it. Fees can appear if you pay a site in another currency, which a UK-licensed casino set up in pounds should not require. Check Monzo’s fee information in the app for your account type. Our guide to casino payment fees lists the charges to look for.
