Online keno UK explained

Online keno in the UK is a lottery-style casino game: you pick between one and around ten numbers from 1 to 80, the game draws 20, and you are paid according to how many of your picks, called catches, match the draw. Payouts follow a fixed pay table, so the RTP depends on the table and how many spots you play.

Key takeaways

  • Keno draws 20 numbers from 80; each number you pick has exactly a 25% chance of being drawn.
  • You are paid from a pay table set by how many spots you pick and how many you catch.
  • Odds fall steeply as you chase more catches: 10 out of 10 is about 1 in 8.9 million.
  • RTP depends on the pay table and varies widely between versions, so check the game rules before you play.
  • Since 17 January 2025, UK online keno has no autoplay and at least five seconds per game.

What online keno is and how it differs from bingo and lotteries

Keno is one of the oldest numbers games, and its online form keeps the simple idea: choose some numbers, watch 20 balls drawn from 80, and get paid for matches. Each number you choose is a spot, and each spot that comes up is a catch. What you win depends on the combination of spots and catches, read from a pay table shown in the game.

It looks like bingo or a lottery but works differently from both. In online bingo you compete with other players for a shared prize. In keno you play against the house: your payout is fixed by the pay table, whatever anyone else does, and the margin is built into that table. It sits with the other instant and numbers games in our casino games hub, alongside online scratchcards.

How to play online keno, step by step

  1. Open a keno game and read the rules panel, which shows the pay table for each number of spots and the RTP.
  2. Choose your stake per game.
  3. Pick your spots by clicking numbers on the 1 to 80 board, or use quick pick to have the game choose them at random.
  4. Start the draw. The game’s random number generator draws 20 numbers, which light up on the board.
  5. Your catches are counted and the pay table decides the payout, which is added to your balance.
  6. To play again, start the next draw yourself; UK rules do not allow a run of draws to play automatically.

Online keno odds: the exact chance of every catch

Because 20 of the 80 numbers are drawn, any single pick has a 25% chance of being drawn. The odds of catching several picks at once follow from that and fall quickly. The table shows the exact chances for a 10-spot game, calculated from the 20-from-80 draw.

80.014%7,385
90.0006%163,381
100.00001%8,911,711

On average you catch 2.5 of 10 picks. That is why ten-spot pay tables pay nothing for two or three catches and save their large multiples for seven or more. Some versions pay a small amount for zero catches on high-spot games, because catching nothing is more likely (about 1 in 22) than catching six.

Reading a keno pay table: a worked 4-spot example

The pay table is where the house edge lives. Here is an illustrative 4-spot table, not taken from any real game, with returns shown as multiples of the stake (including the stake itself).

Illustrative 4-spot keno pay table and its RTP
CatchesChanceReturnsContribution per £1
0 or 174.1%Nothing0p
221.3% (1 in 4.7)1× (stake back)21.3p
34.3% (1 in 23)6×25.9p
40.31% (1 in 326)150×45.9p
Total93.2p (93.2% RTP)

Nearly half of this game’s return comes from the 4-catch prize, which lands once in about 326 games. Most of the time you either lose the stake or get it back. Change the 4-catch return from 150× to 100× and the RTP drops to about 77.8%, which shows how much a single line of the table matters. Real pay tables differ from game to game, so compare them; the expected value glossary entry explains the calculation.

Keno RTP and house edge: why versions differ so much

Keno has a reputation as an expensive game, and in land casinos it has often deserved it. Surveys collected by the Wizard of Odds found live keno in Las Vegas returning between 65% and 80%, while video keno in San Diego returned between 84% and 95%; its keno rules and returns page (opens in a new tab) summarises those surveys. Online versions publish their own figures, which vary with the pay table and sometimes with the number of spots, so the game rules are the place to check.

Expected cost of £1 games at different keno RTPs

95%5p£5£25
90%10p£10£50
80%20p£20£100
70%30p£30£150

If a version does not show its RTP clearly, treat that as a reason to choose another. Our guides to RTP and the house edge explain how to compare games, and which casino games have the best odds puts keno alongside the alternatives.

How many keno spots should you pick?

The number of spots changes the shape of your results more than the average. Few spots mean frequent small wins; many spots mean long losing runs broken by rare larger payouts. The RTP for each spot count is set by the pay table and may be similar across them.

Advantages

  • 1 to 3 spots: frequent results, low swings and a session budget that lasts longer.
  • 4 to 6 spots: a balance between hit rate and the size of the top prizes.
  • Checking each spot count’s RTP can reveal one that returns slightly more.

Drawbacks

  • 8 to 10 spots: most games lose, and the top prize may never be seen in a lifetime of play.
  • Larger spot counts make losing streaks of 20 or more games common.
  • No spot count removes the house edge built into the table.

UK rules that apply to online keno in 2026

At UK-licensed casinos, keno is a non-slot casino game. Since 17 January 2025, the extended game design rules mean autoplay is banned, every game must be started by you, each game cycle must last at least five seconds, and your net position and session time must be on screen. The Commission’s speed of play decision (opens in a new tab) sets out the five-second rule, and our table game speed rules page explains it.

Multi-draw features, which play the same numbers for a set number of draws, are common on keno outside the UK but fall foul of the autoplay ban here. The £5 and £2 stake limits apply to reel-based slots, not keno, so each game sets its own stake range. You must be verified as 18+ before playing any version, including demos, and credit cards cannot be used to fund play.

Keno myths and number systems

  • Hot and cold numbers. Previous draws do not affect the next one; tracking them changes nothing.
  • Picking the same numbers until they hit. Each draw is independent; staying with a set has no advantage.
  • Patterns on the board. Rows, columns and clusters have the same chance as any other choice of spots.
  • Raising the stake after losses. It increases your exposure to the house edge; the Martingale system page shows why it fails.

Our guide to the gambler’s fallacy explains why these feel convincing, and casino betting systems covers the rest.

Planning a keno session: a worked £20 budget

Say you set £20 and play 4-spot games at 50p on a version with a 93% RTP. The average cost is 3.5p per game, or £3.50 over 100 games. Most of those games will lose or return the stake, and whether you finish ahead depends mostly on whether a 4-catch lands, which happens about once in 326 games. Set the budget and a time limit together, as keno’s quick rounds make time pass fast, and use a deposit limit to back them up.

Frequently asked questions

How does online keno work?

You pick numbers, called spots, from a board of 1 to 80, and the game draws 20 numbers at random. Each of your spots that is drawn is a catch, and the pay table sets your payout for that number of catches given the spots you chose. Every pick has a 25% chance of being drawn. You play against the house, not other players, so your payout is fixed in advance. Our random number generator guide explains how online draws are produced.

What are the odds of winning keno?

It depends on how many spots you pick and how many catches the pay table needs. A single spot has a 25% chance. With 4 spots, catching all 4 is about 1 in 326; with 10 spots, catching all 10 is about 1 in 8.9 million. Because pay tables pay for partial catches, you can win something fairly often on lower spot counts, but many of those wins only return your stake. Our casino odds explainer covers the probabilities behind games like this.

What is the RTP of online keno?

It varies widely because each version sets its own pay table. Surveys of land-based keno have found returns as low as 65% to 80%, while video versions have returned 84% to 95%. Online keno publishes its figure in the game rules, sometimes with different figures for different spot counts. Choose a version that shows its RTP clearly and compare it with other games. Our page on what a good RTP is gives benchmarks.

How many numbers should I pick in keno?

There is no best number. Fewer spots give frequent small results and gentler swings; more spots mean long losing runs and occasional larger payouts. The house edge is set by the pay table and may be similar across spot counts, so choose the shape of game you prefer and the budget you can afford. If the game shows RTP by spot count, choosing the highest is the one real improvement available. Our volatility guide explains why swings matter.

Is keno a lottery or a casino game?

Online keno at UK casinos is a casino game. It uses a lottery-style draw, but you play against the house with a fixed pay table, and it is supplied under a remote casino licence with the casino game design rules. That means no autoplay, at least five seconds per game and your net position on screen. National and society lotteries operate under different licences and rules. Our Gambling Commission explainer covers how licence types differ.

Can I use quick pick or autoplay in keno?

Quick pick, which chooses your numbers at random, is fine and has exactly the same odds as choosing yourself. Autoplay is different: since 17 January 2025 it has been banned across online casino games in Great Britain, so each draw must be started by you, and multi-draw features that repeat your numbers automatically are not allowed. Each game must also last at least five seconds. Our autoplay ban page explains the history of the rule.

Can you win keno with a strategy?

No strategy beats the house edge in keno, because every draw is random and independent and the pay table is fixed. Choosing hot numbers, cold numbers or patterns changes nothing, and raising stakes after losses only increases what you risk. The only decisions that affect value are choosing a version with a higher RTP and a spot count with the best published return. Treat the rest as entertainment. Our gambling myths guide covers common beliefs.

Is online keno legal in the UK?

Yes, for adults aged 18 and over at casinos licensed by the Gambling Commission. Licensed sites must verify your age before any play, including demo versions, follow the game design rules and offer safer gambling tools such as deposit limits and time-outs. Sites without a UK licence offer none of these protections. Search any casino’s name or web address on the Commission’s public register, following our guide on how to check a casino licence.

Why does keno sometimes pay for zero catches?

On high-spot games, catching none of your numbers is more likely than catching many. With 10 spots, zero catches happens about once in 22 games, compared with about once in 87 for six catches. Some pay tables reward zero catches to make the game feel fairer and to spread the return more evenly, but the overall RTP still includes the house margin. It is a design choice, not a sign of better value. Our house edge guide explains how margins are set.
