NetEnt: the studio behind Starburst

NetEnt was founded in 1996 in Stockholm, making it one of the longest-running online slot studios. Over the following two decades it produced many of the games that define the format in Britain: Starburst, Gonzo's Quest, Twin Spin, Dead or Alive and the Mega Fortune progressive jackpot. In December 2020 it became part of Evolution, the live casino group, which also owns Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City.

That makes NetEnt casino games among the most widely distributed in the UK. A casino connected to Evolution can usually offer the whole NetEnt range alongside its sister brands. Evolution's own site, evolution.com (opens in a new tab), lists the group's slot and live casino studios. For background on how this supply chain works, see our casino software providers guide or browse the full providers hub.

Signature NetEnt mechanics

NetEnt popularised several features that later spread across the industry. Knowing them helps you understand what you're looking at in many other studios' games too.

  • Avalanche reels (Gonzo's Quest). Symbols fall into place instead of spinning. Winning symbols crumble, new ones drop in, and in the original game a multiplier rises with each consecutive avalanche. It's NetEnt's take on cascading reels.
  • Expanding wilds (Starburst). A wild on the middle three reels expands to fill the reel and triggers a respin, with the wild held in place. Wins pay both ways across 10 lines. See expanding wild.
  • Linked twin reels (Twin Spin). Each spin starts with at least two adjacent reels showing identical symbols, and the linked set can grow to five. The game pays on 243 ways.
  • Cluster pays. Games such as Aloha! Cluster Pays pay for groups of matching symbols that touch, rather than lines. See cluster pays explained.

The common thread is clarity. NetEnt's classic mechanics are easy to follow on screen, which is one reason games from 2011 and 2012 remain in lobbies years later.

Classic NetEnt casino games: verified figures

These figures come from our verified slot records. NetEnt often supplies more than one RTP version, so where a figure says 'default' or 'highest version', the help screen in your casino may show something lower.

Blood Suckers stands out at 98.00%, one of the highest published RTPs on any mainstream video slot, while Gonzo's Quest sits just under 96%. Our high RTP slots guide puts these in context.

Low to extreme: how NetEnt spreads its maths

NetEnt casino games cover nearly every volatility level, often within the same theme. Starburst is low volatility with a 500× ceiling; Starburst XXXtreme reworks the same jewels into a high-volatility game with a ceiling of 200,000×. Dead or Alive 2 pushes its top prize to 111,111× stake. The RTPs barely move, but the experience changes completely.

To see why that matters, compare two players who each stake £100 at 50p a spin, 200 spins each. On Starburst at 96.09%, the expected cost is £3.91, and the most any single spin could pay is £250 (500 × 50p). On Starburst XXXtreme at 96.26%, the expected cost is £3.74 and the ceiling is £100,000, but the chance of reaching anything close to it is extremely small, and most sessions will see long runs without a meaningful win. Same spend, nearly the same average, very different spread of outcomes.

Our volatility guide and max win explained page go deeper into how ceilings and frequency trade off.

NetEnt jackpot games: Mega Fortune and friends

NetEnt also runs progressive jackpots, where a small share of each stake feeds a prize that grows until someone wins it. Mega Fortune, launched in 2009, is the best known, with a top-tier Mega jackpot shared across many casinos through a jackpot network.

Divine Fortune96.59%MediumProgressive jackpot
Mega JokerUp to 99% (top stake with Supermeter)HighRandom progressive jackpot

Note the words 'includes jackpots'. On a progressive slot, part of the RTP is paid out only when someone wins the top prize. The return from ordinary spins is therefore lower than the headline figure suggests, and most players never receive the jackpot share. Mega Joker's top figure depends on playing at its highest stake with the Supermeter feature; at lower stakes the return is lower, so read its help screen carefully, especially with the UK stake cap in place.

NetEnt in the Evolution group

Since December 2020, NetEnt has been one of Evolution's slot brands. Group ownership hasn't merged the studios' catalogues: NetEnt still releases under its own name, and its games keep their original maths. What it has done is put NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City on the same distribution channel, and the family ties show in the games: Red Tiger's Gonzo's Quest Megaways remakes a NetEnt classic, and NetEnt's own Megaways titles, such as Twin Spin Megaways (96.04% default, up to 117,649 ways, 38,000× max) and Divine Fortune Megaways, use the engine created by sister studio Big Time Gaming.

Group-level regulation applies too. In July 2026 the Gambling Commission announced that Evolution Malta Holding Limited would pay £4.75 million (opens in a new tab) after the group's games appeared on unlicensed websites accessible from Great Britain. The case concerned distribution controls, not game fairness, and is a useful reminder to play only at licensed casinos. We list other recent actions on our Gambling Commission fines page.

UK rules that shape NetEnt casino games

Some NetEnt games are older than Britain's current slot rules, so their UK builds have been updated. If you remember Starburst with autoplay, that version is gone for British players.

  • Autoplay, turbo and slam-stop have been banned on online slots since 31 October 2021; see the autoplay ban.
  • Each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds under the spin speed limit.
  • Stakes are capped at £5 per spin from age 25 and £2 for ages 18–24, under rules from 2025.
  • A return equal to or less than your stake can't be presented as a win.
  • Your net position and session time are shown on screen.

The Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) includes worked examples of how the caps apply.

Checking NetEnt's UK licence

Gambling software suppliers serving British casinos need a Gambling Commission licence. Following the move into Evolution, the licensed entity names may have changed, and we haven't verified a current account number to quote. Search 'NetEnt' or 'Evolution' on the public register of businesses (opens in a new tab) to see each entity's status and activities. Our walkthrough on how to check a casino licence shows what each part of an entry means.

How to find NetEnt casino games at a UK casino

  1. Sign in to a UK-licensed casino and complete age and identity checks; demo play also needs verification.
  2. Open the slots lobby and select the providers filter.
  3. Choose NetEnt. If the casino groups Evolution brands, it may appear as a sub-filter.
  4. Search a title such as 'Starburst' or 'Gonzo' to bring up the original and any sequels or Megaways versions.
  5. Read the RTP in the help screen, since NetEnt supplies some games in several versions.
  6. Set a deposit limit and a stake within your £5 or £2 cap before you start.

Where to play NetEnt casino games with a checked offer

We don't claim any partner stocks particular NetEnt titles, as lobbies change. The three UKGC-licensed casinos below had their offers checked on 5 October 2026, and none is limited to NetEnt. If you specifically want spins on Starburst, our Starburst free spins page explains what's available and why. Ladbrokes gives new customers aged 18+ up to 500 free spins at 10p, as 50 a day for 10 days, after spending £10 on slots; spins are on selected games with no wagering.

Coral gives 100 free spins at 10p on selected games once you deposit and bet £10 on slots, valid for 7 days with no wagering on winnings. New PlayOJO customers outside Northern Ireland get 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza at PlayOJO with a £10 first deposit, and those winnings come as cash with no wagering. Coral and Ladbrokes exclude certain payment methods; terms apply to all three offers.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns NetEnt?

NetEnt has been owned by Evolution since December 2020. Evolution is best known for live casino games and game shows, and it also owns the slot studios Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City. NetEnt still releases games under its own name and keeps its own catalogue, including Starburst and Gonzo's Quest. In many UK lobbies you'll find all four Evolution slot brands listed close together. See our Evolution profile for the group, and the Red Tiger page for the studio NetEnt bought in 2019.

What is the RTP of Starburst?

Starburst is published at 96.09% RTP, with low volatility and a maximum win of 500× stake. That means it returns about £96.09 per £100 staked over a very long run, and wins tend to be frequent but small. Expanding wilds on the middle reels trigger respins, and wins pay both ways across 10 lines. Always confirm the figure in the game's help screen, as casinos can run different versions. Our pages on how to check slot RTP and what is a good RTP explain how to interpret it.

What is NetEnt's highest RTP slot?

Among the NetEnt games we hold verified figures for, Blood Suckers has the highest standard published RTP at 98.00%, with low volatility. Mega Joker is listed at up to 99%, but only at its top stake using the Supermeter feature, so the figure doesn't apply to all play. Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2 are listed at 96.82% for their highest version. A higher RTP reduces the expected cost of play, but losses remain likely over time. See our high RTP slots guide and RTP explained.

How do Avalanche reels work in Gonzo's Quest?

Instead of spinning, symbols fall into place. When a win lands, the winning symbols crumble and new ones drop into the gaps, giving another chance to win from the same stake. In the original Gonzo's Quest, the multiplier rises with each consecutive avalanche in a sequence, and it climbs higher during free falls. The sequence ends when no new win forms. Gonzo's Quest is published at 95.97% RTP with medium volatility. Our cascading reels explainer and slot multipliers guide cover the mechanic in more depth.

Is Mega Fortune still available in the UK?

Mega Fortune, launched in 2009, is a NetEnt progressive slot whose top Mega jackpot is shared across casinos on a network. Whether a particular UK casino offers it depends on that casino's game selection, so search the title in the lobby. Its published RTP is about 96% to 96.6%, including the jackpot contribution, which means returns from ordinary spins are lower. UK stake caps apply as usual. Read our guides to progressive jackpots and what happens when you hit a jackpot.

What is the difference between Starburst and Starburst XXXtreme?

They share a theme but not their maths. Starburst is low volatility, published at 96.09% RTP with a 500× stake maximum and 10 lines that pay both ways. Starburst XXXtreme is high volatility, published at 96.26% with 9 paylines and a maximum of 200,000× stake. The long-run cost per £100 staked is almost the same, but XXXtreme delivers its return through rarer, larger outcomes, so most sessions will feel much quieter. Choose based on how you want a session to feel. Our explainers on slot volatility and hit frequency show how to tell the two apart.

Can I use autoplay on NetEnt games in the UK?

No. Autoplay has been banned on online slots for British players since 31 October 2021, so every spin of a NetEnt game must be started by hand. Turbo and slam-stop were removed at the same time, and each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds. Older NetEnt games such as Starburst had autoplay in their original form, but the versions supplied to Great Britain were updated. Our pages on the autoplay ban and game design rules explain the reasons and dates.

Is NetEnt licensed by the Gambling Commission?

Suppliers of gambling software to British casinos need a Gambling Commission licence, and NetEnt games are offered widely at UK-licensed casinos. Since the move into Evolution, entity names may have changed, and we haven't verified a current account number to quote. You can check by searching 'NetEnt' or 'Evolution' on the Commission's public register. The casino you play at must also show its own licence. Our guides on how to check a casino licence and what does UKGC licensed mean explain the checks.

What are NetEnt Megaways games?

NetEnt has remade several of its own titles on the Megaways engine, which was created by Big Time Gaming, now a sister studio in the Evolution group. Twin Spin Megaways, from 2020, is published at 96.04% default RTP with up to 117,649 ways and a 38,000× stake maximum. Divine Fortune Megaways is another example, at 96.09% default. Each reel shows a random number of symbols every spin, so the ways to win change constantly. Volatility is often higher than the original game. See our Megaways slots guide and the Big Time Gaming profile.

What is the most I can bet on NetEnt slots?

At UK-licensed casinos the maximum is £5 per spin if you're 25 or over and £2 per spin if you're aged 18 to 24, under rules from 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025. That applies to every NetEnt slot, including jackpot games where a higher stake might otherwise improve your jackpot chances or RTP, as with Mega Joker's Supermeter. Respins and avalanches within one spin count as one game cycle. Our £5 slot stake limit and £2 slot stake limit pages give worked examples.
