Opt-in meaning at casinos

Opt-in meaning: taking a deliberate step, such as ticking a box or selecting an offer, to say yes to something. At UK casinos it has two uses: opting in to a bonus before you qualify for it, and opting in to marketing, which since 1 May 2025 must be chosen product by product and channel by channel.

Key takeaways

  • A bonus opt-in is the step that attaches an offer to your account; skip it and you may not receive the bonus.
  • Casumo's welcome match requires an opt-in; 10bet asks you to choose its casino welcome bonus at sign-up.
  • Since 1 May 2025, marketing is opt-in per product (casino, betting, bingo) and per channel (email, SMS, phone).
  • Not opting in is always allowed; you can play with your own money and no bonus terms.

Opt-in meaning: two different decisions

In everyday casino use, opt-in describes an active yes. The opposite, opt-out, means something applies unless you say no. Two very different choices use the same word, and confusing them causes most of the questions we see about it.

How a bonus opt-in works

Many promotions are not applied automatically. The casino needs you to accept the offer, which binds you to its terms: wagering requirement, max bet, bonus expiry and game restrictions. Casumo's welcome match (18+, new customers) states that an opt-in is required: a 50% bonus up to £100 on a first deposit of at least £20, with the bonus wagered 10x within 7 days and a £5 maximum bet. At 10bet, the published terms ask you to choose the casino welcome bonus at sign-up and then make your first deposit within 7 days.

  1. Read the significant terms next to the offer before registering.
  2. Tick the offer box or choose the bonus at sign-up, as the terms describe.
  3. Make the qualifying deposit with an accepted payment method.
  4. Check the bonus or promotions area to confirm the offer is attached before you play.
  5. If it is missing, contact support before placing bets, since some offers cannot be added afterwards.

Opting in late is a common reason a bonus never appears. Our page on why did my free spins not appear lists the other usual causes.

Choosing not to opt in to a bonus

Saying no is a legitimate choice. Without a bonus, your balance is real money with no play-through and no bonus stake cap, so you can withdraw whenever you like, subject to normal verification. For some players that flexibility is worth more than the extra funds. Our comparison of no wagering and low wagering offers, and the question are free spins worth it, help weigh it up.

Worked example: £20 deposited with Casumo's opt-in adds a £10 bonus, but the £10 then needs £100 of qualifying bets within 7 days, at no more than £5 a bet. Without opting in, the £20 is simply yours to play or withdraw.

Marketing opt-in under the 1 May 2025 rule

Since 1 May 2025, remote casino, betting and bingo operators have had to let customers opt in to direct marketing separately for each product and each channel, with every option off by default. The rule is LCCP 5.1.12 on direct marketing preferences (opens in a new tab). Existing customers were asked to confirm their preferences at their first log-in after it started. Post is not one of the channels covered.

So agreeing to casino emails does not mean agreeing to betting texts. Our page on marketing consent rules explains the background, and opting out of casino marketing shows how to change settings.

When opt-ins stop counting

Consent is not the last word. Under the Commission's remote customer interaction code (opens in a new tab), marketing and new bonus take-up must stop where a customer shows strong indicators of harm, a requirement in force since 12 February 2023. Self-exclusion through GAMSTOP also ends marketing. If messages keep arriving after you have said no, the Commission's page on stopping gambling marketing texts and emails (opens in a new tab) explains what to do. Our customer interaction rules page has the detail.

  • Qualifying deposit: the payment that, after opting in, triggers the bonus.
  • Sticky bonus: a bonus that stays in the account and cannot be withdrawn itself.
  • Bonus abuse: what terms call misuse of an offer you opted in to.
  • No wagering: offers where opting in adds no play-through.

Frequently asked questions

What does opt-in mean on a casino bonus?

It means actively accepting the offer, usually by ticking a box or selecting it at sign-up or in the cashier, so the casino attaches it to your account. Opting in also means agreeing to its terms, including wagering, expiry and stake caps. Casumo's welcome match, for example, requires an opt-in. If you skip the step, the bonus may not be added. Our guide on how do I claim a casino bonus walks through it, and how to read bonus terms covers the conditions.

Do I have to opt in to casino marketing?

No; since 1 May 2025 marketing has been off by default, and you choose separately for casino, betting and bingo, and for email, SMS and phone. You can agree to some combinations and refuse the rest, and you can change your mind at any time in account settings. Declining marketing never affects your right to play or withdraw. See marketing consent rules for the rule itself and casino email and SMS offers for what opting in usually brings.

Can I opt in to a bonus after depositing?

Sometimes, but often not, so the safe approach is to opt in before you make the qualifying deposit. Many offers check eligibility at the moment of the deposit and cannot be added afterwards. If you forget, contact support before placing any bets, as playing the deposit first can make the bonus unavailable. Our casino welcome bonus mistakes guide covers this and similar slips, and how to deposit at an online casino shows where opt-in boxes usually sit.

Is it better not to opt in to a bonus?

It depends on how you play; without a bonus you avoid wagering and stake caps and can withdraw your balance at any time. With one, you get extra funds or spins but accept conditions. A small bonus with 10x wagering may not suit someone who plays briefly. Gambling costs money either way, and a bonus does not change the house edge. Compare the options in what is a fair casino bonus and our comparing casino bonuses guide.

Can I opt out of a bonus once I have accepted it?

Many casinos let you forfeit an active bonus, but doing so usually removes the bonus and any winnings still tied to it. Your own cash balance should stay. The method varies: some sites offer a cancel button in the bonus area, others ask you to contact support. Read the forfeiture term before you act. See can I withdraw a casino bonus and sticky vs non-sticky bonuses to understand which part of a balance you keep.

Why am I still getting casino emails after opting out?

A short delay can happen while preferences update, but continued messages after you have opted out may break the rules. Check that you changed the right product and channel, since the choices are separate. Then contact the casino and keep a record. Self-excluding through GAMSTOP should also stop marketing from all participating operators. Our opting out of casino marketing guide covers the steps, and how to use GAMSTOP explains the scheme.

Does opting in to marketing get me better offers?

It may bring offers for existing customers that are sent only by email or text, but no rule says opted-in customers must get better deals. Weigh any promotions against how much contact you want, and remember that offers exist to encourage more play. Mixed-product offers, such as bet on sport to unlock casino spins, have been banned since 19 January 2026. Our offers for existing customers page and mixed-product promotions ban give context.
