New casino first deposit checklist
A new casino first deposit checklist saves you from the mistakes that can't be put right later. Before money moves at any UK casino, confirm the licence, read the offer's payment exclusions, set a deposit limit at the prompt, deposit only the qualifying amount with an eligible method, and plan how your first withdrawal will come back.
Key takeaways
- Since 31 October 2025 you're prompted to set a deposit limit before your first deposit.
- Payment method decides whether the welcome offer applies: e-wallets are often excluded.
- Deposit the qualifying amount, not the maximum: £10 unlocks three of the five partner offers.
- Verification happens before you deposit, and a casino can't demand ID at withdrawal that it could have asked for earlier.
- Plan the first withdrawal: closed-loop rules send money back to the method you deposited with.
LatestBefore a first deposit at any new casino: check the licence, read the offer's terms, set a deposit limit, and deposit the minimum by debit card.
Seven steps
- Find the operator and account number in the footer.
- Confirm them on the Gambling Commission register.
- Read the offer's significant terms: wagering 10x or less?
- Screenshot the offer.
- Set a deposit limit in your account.
- Deposit the minimum, by debit card, in one payment.
- Verify your identity before you need to withdraw.
The first withdrawal
Make a small withdrawal early. How a casino handles it tells you more than its home page.

How to judge a new casino, or the quick checker.
Why the first deposit matters most
A welcome offer attaches to it. The wrong amount, the wrong payment method or a missed opt-in usually cannot be put right afterwards.
The one-line version
Licence checked, limit set, terms read, debit card, qualifying amount, one payment.
First deposit rules at UK casinos in 2026: what has changed
Several steps on a first deposit checklist are now partly enforced by the rules themselves. Knowing which ones tells you what a licensed casino must do for you, and what you still have to do yourself. If a site skips any of the first five rows below, you're not dealing with a properly licensed British operator.
| Rule | In force since | What happens at your first deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Age and identity verification | 7 May 2019 | Name, address and date of birth are checked, usually against databases, before you can deposit or use any bonus |
| Credit card ban | 14 April 2020 | Only debit cards and other non-credit methods; e-wallets mustn't be topped up from a credit card |
| Marketing consent per product and channel | 1 May 2025 | Opt-out is the default at registration, so leave boxes unticked unless you want the messages |
| Financial limit prompt | 31 October 2025 | You're prompted to set a limit before the first deposit; setting one is the default and skipping it must be confirmed |
| Customer funds disclosure | Licence condition 4.2.1 | The casino tells you whether your balance has no, medium or high protection, and you acknowledge it before your first deposit is used |
| 10x wagering cap | 19 January 2026 | Any first deposit bonus can ask you to play through the bonus no more than ten times |
| Gross deposit limits | Deadline 30 September 2026 | Only limits on the total you put in, not net of withdrawals, can be called deposit limits |
Each row has a fuller explainer: age verification, the deposit limit rules, player funds protection and marketing consent. The Commission's own checks you can do to stay safe (opens in a new tab) page covers the same ground from the regulator's side.
Best payment method for a first deposit bonus
The payment method is the single most common reason a first deposit misses its welcome offer. A Visa or Mastercard debit card is the safest default, but even that isn't universal: Coral's terms exclude certain debit cards. E-wallets and prepaid cards are excluded more often than not. The table below sets out what each partner's published offer terms say (18+, terms apply, checked 5 October 2026).
| Casino | Excluded from the welcome offer | Also check |
|---|---|---|
| Coral | Neteller, PayPal, Paysafe, Skrill, prepaid cards and certain debit cards | Which debit cards qualify, in the full terms |
| Ladbrokes | Prepaid cards, PayPal, Paysafe, Neteller, Skrill and Moneybookers | Claim the spins before 23:59 each day |
| PlayOJO | No exclusions in the terms we hold; read the full terms | You must arrive through the designated offer link |
| Casumo | Game, play and payment method restrictions apply | Opt in before depositing |
| 10bet | No exclusions in the terms we hold; check at sign-up | Choose the casino welcome bonus when you register |
Why the deposit method also decides your withdrawal
UK casinos run a closed-loop policy: winnings normally go back to the method you paid in with. At Coral and Ladbrokes, a PayPal withdrawal needs a PayPal deposit within the previous six months, a paysafecard withdrawal needs an earlier paysafecard deposit, and UK accounts can have no more than three active payment methods in a rolling 30 days. Casumo charges £3 on withdrawals below £10. Choosing one sensible method at the start avoids a tangle later. See why PayPal can't be used for some bonuses, our debit card guide and Coral's bonus payment exclusions page for the detail.
How much to deposit first: worked examples for each offer
The amount that qualifies for an offer is rarely the same as the amount the offer seems to invite. Depositing more doesn't make free spins bigger, and with matched bonuses a larger deposit means more wagering in the same short window. Here is what the qualifying first deposit unlocks at each partner (18+, terms apply).
| Offer | Least you need to put in | What it unlocks | Play-through |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coral: bet £10, get 100 free spins | Deposit and bet £10 on slots | 100 spins × 10p = £10 of spins, valid 7 days | No wagering on spin winnings |
| Ladbrokes: up to 500 free spins | Deposit and play £10 on slots | 50 spins a day for 10 days × 10p = up to £50 | No wagering |
| PlayOJO: 80 free spins | £10 first deposit | 80 spins × 10p = £8 on Big Bass Bonanza | No wagering; winnings paid as cash |
| Casumo: 50% up to £100 | £20 first deposit | £10 bonus at £20; £100 bonus at £200 | 10x the bonus within 7 days: £100 to £1,000 |
| 10bet: 100% up to £25 | First deposit within 7 days of sign-up | £25 bonus on a £25 deposit | 10x the bonus on slots within 3 days: £250 |
Worked example: how big a matched deposit should be
Deposit £200 at Casumo and you receive the full £100 bonus, but you must then wager £1,000 within seven days, at no more than £5 a bet while the bonus is active. Even at the £5 maximum that is 200 bets; at 50p a spin it is 2,000 spins, which takes at least 83 minutes of continuous play at the 2.5-second minimum spin time. A £20 deposit, by contrast, brings a £10 bonus and £100 of wagering. At 10bet, £25 brings £25 of bonus and £250 of wagering on slots inside three days, with bonus winnings capped at £1,000. Run any figure through the wagering calculator before you choose.
Setting a deposit limit before your first deposit
Since 31 October 2025, licensed casinos must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Setting one is the default, opting out has to be confirmed, the amount is yours to type (no suggested figures), and any decrease takes effect immediately. If you keep a limit, the casino must prompt you to review it at least every six months. The Commission's article on the new deposit limit rules (opens in a new tab) explains the thinking.
- Work out a monthly sum you're content to spend on gambling as entertainment, money you won't need for bills or savings.
- Divide it into a weekly figure, because a weekly limit stops a whole month's budget going in one evening.
- Enter that figure when the casino prompts you, before the first deposit screen.
- Turn on reality checks or session reminders at the same time, if the casino offers them.
- Write the limit down, so you notice if you're ever tempted to raise it.
Worked example: when a limit and an offer clash
Say your budget is £60 a month, so you set £15 a week. Casumo's welcome offer needs a £20 first deposit, which a £15 weekly limit would block. The answer isn't to raise the limit; it's to choose an offer that fits, such as one of the three that qualify at £10. Our guides on how to set deposit limits and whether you can change a deposit limit cover the mechanics.
ID verification before a first deposit: what UK casinos check
Before 7 May 2019, operators had 72 hours to complete age checks after an account opened. Now age and identity must be verified before you can deposit, gamble or use a bonus. The minimum is your name, address and date of birth, usually confirmed against credit reference and electoral roll data; you're asked for documents only if that fails. The Commission's guide to age and ID verification (opens in a new tab) adds an important protection: a casino can't make ID a condition of withdrawing if it could have asked for it earlier.
The £150 financial vulnerability check
Since 28 February 2025, once your deposits minus withdrawals pass £150 in a rolling 30 days, the casino must run a public-record check for things such as bankruptcy, county court judgments and debt relief orders. Deposit £50 three times in a month and withdraw nothing, and you've reached the threshold. For most people the check is invisible. It isn't a credit score or an ‘affordability check’, a term the Commission itself calls inaccurate; see financial vulnerability checks explained.
Have a photo ID and a recent proof of address ready in case the database check doesn't match. Our guides on verification documents, proof of address and how long verification takes list what's normally accepted.
First deposit bonus mistakes that can't be undone
Most welcome offers attach only to the first deposit. Get one detail wrong and the offer is usually gone for good, because support teams generally can't apply it retrospectively. These are the slips that the partner terms make easiest to fall into (18+, terms apply).
- Paying with an excluded method, such as PayPal at Coral or Ladbrokes.
- Forgetting to opt in at Casumo, where opt-in is required.
- Skipping the bonus choice at sign-up at 10bet, or depositing more than 7 days after registering.
- Missing a claim window: Coral's spins must be accepted within 48 hours, and Ladbrokes' daily batch must be claimed before 23:59.
- Arriving by the wrong route at PlayOJO, where the offer only applies through the designated offer link and can't be combined with other offers. It also excludes Northern Ireland.
- Betting over £5 a spin while a Casumo bonus is active.
- Assuming two brands are separate. Coral and Ladbrokes are both run by LC International Limited, so one person may not be able to hold new accounts at both; read the terms.
More detail is in welcome bonus mistakes, the max bet rule and what happens if you break bonus terms.
After the first deposit: planning your first withdrawal
Your rights at withdrawal are clear. The Commission's page on withdrawing your winnings (opens in a new tab) says you can withdraw without unreasonable delay and don't have to take money in instalments, and that a casino can't confiscate funds because you didn't verify within a time limit. Since 31 October 2021 no licensed site may offer to cancel a withdrawal so you can keep playing. There is no legal maximum processing time, so the published times below are the operators' own.
| Casino | Approval stage | After approval |
|---|---|---|
| Coral | Internal review; Visa Fast Funds approval typically a couple of hours | Visa Fast Funds typically up to 4 hours; Fast Bank Transfer 2–4 business days |
| Ladbrokes | Internal review; Visa Fast Funds approval typically a couple of hours | Visa Fast Funds typically up to 4 hours; Fast Bank Transfer 2–4 business days |
| Casumo | Usually within hours; policy allows up to 3 days | Card up to 2 days; bank up to 5 days; PayPal and other e-wallets instantly after approval |
| 10bet | No separate pending time published | Debit cards and e-wallets up to 2 business days; bank transfer up to 3 |
| PlayOJO | Not published in the facts we hold | Check the cashier |
A modest early withdrawal shows you how the process works while the sums are small. Coral and Ladbrokes publish no withdrawal fees; Casumo's £3 fee applies only below £10. Compare times in our Coral withdrawal time and Casumo withdrawal time pages, and read can you cancel a casino withdrawal for the reverse-withdrawal rule.
The full new casino first deposit checklist: before, during and after
The seven steps near the top of this page are the short form. This is the complete version, grouped by when each check happens. Keep it open in another tab the first time you register anywhere new.
| Stage | Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Before | Licence holder and account number in the footer match the public register | Confirms British rules and dispute routes apply |
| Before | Offer terms: qualifying amount, eligible methods, wagering, expiry | The first deposit can't be redone |
| Before | Screenshot the offer and its significant terms | Evidence if the offer is later disputed |
| Before | Customer funds protection rating in the terms | Tells you what happens to your balance if the business fails |
| During | Set a weekly limit at the prompt | Your ceiling is fixed before any temptation to raise it |
| During | Opt in to the bonus if required; decline unwanted marketing | Missed opt-ins lose the offer; marketing is opt-in since May 2025 |

Why each step is there
The first two confirm the casino answers to a British regulator. The third and fourth protect you if the offer is later disputed. The fifth sets your own ceiling before any pressure to raise it. The sixth keeps the welcome offer intact and the risk small. The seventh means a withdrawal will not wait on paperwork.
After the first week
If withdrawals arrived as described and support answered when asked, you have the beginnings of a track record of your own.
Before you deposit anywhere new: run the checker, then check the licence.

Frequently asked questions
What should I do before a first deposit?
Check the licence and set a limit, then read the offer terms. Find the licence holder and Gambling Commission account number in the site footer and confirm both on the public register. Next, read the welcome offer's significant terms: the qualifying amount, which payment methods are excluded, the wagering (10x at most since 19 January 2026) and the expiry. Set a weekly deposit limit when the casino prompts you, which it must do before your first deposit since 31 October 2025. Finally, have ID ready in case the automatic check needs documents. Our new casino checker covers the licence step.
How much should I deposit?
Deposit the minimum that qualifies for the offer you want, and never more than your budget allows. At three of the five partner casinos that is £10: Coral and Ladbrokes need £10 deposited and played on slots, and PlayOJO needs a £10 first deposit (18+, terms apply). Casumo needs at least £20, and every extra pound you add raises the 10x wagering you must finish within seven days. A small first deposit also keeps your exposure low while you find out how the casino handles withdrawals and support. If your weekly limit is below an offer's minimum, pick a different offer rather than raising the limit.
Which payment method?
A Visa or Mastercard debit card, in most cases, because it qualifies for more welcome offers than any other method and withdrawals normally return to it. E-wallets are the usual casualty: Coral excludes PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, prepaid cards and certain debit cards, while Ladbrokes excludes PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, Moneybookers and prepaid cards (checked 5 October 2026). Casumo's offer has payment restrictions too. Credit cards can't be used at all in Great Britain since 14 April 2020. Whatever you choose, stick with it, because closed-loop rules tie your withdrawals to the method you deposited with.
When should I verify?
Straight away, and in fact a licensed casino must verify your age and identity before you can deposit at all. Since 7 May 2019, checks on your name, address and date of birth happen at registration, usually automatically against databases. If that check can't match you, the casino will ask for documents, so upload a clear photo ID and a recent proof of address as soon as you're asked. Doing it early means a withdrawal never waits on paperwork, and a casino can't demand ID at withdrawal that it could have asked for earlier. Our verification guide explains each stage.
Where can I get help with gambling?
The National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential and open 24 hours on 0808 8020 133. GamCare runs it, and you can also reach it by live chat or WhatsApp. In Wales, the NHS Wales Helpline is on 0808 2819 265. People in England can refer themselves to an NHS gambling clinic, and Gamblers Anonymous runs peer-support meetings across Britain. Practical tools help too: GAMSTOP blocks every licensed gambling site for a period you choose, and many banks can block gambling payments on your card. None of these services costs anything, and you don't need to be in crisis to use them.
Have you tested these casinos with real money?
No. Latest Casinos is a desk-based guide and says so plainly. We don't open accounts, deposit, play or time withdrawals. Everything on this checklist comes from published sources: the Gambling Commission's rules and public register, and each casino's own terms and help pages, with the date we read them shown on the page. Where a fact isn't published, such as a payout time some casinos don't state, we tell you to check the cashier instead of guessing. That is also why the checklist suggests a small first withdrawal: it is the way you can see a casino's process for yourself.
Does commission change what you report?
No. Some links on this site are adverts, and we may earn commission if you sign up through them, but that doesn't change which casinos we cover, the order they appear in, or what we say about their terms. Every offer is described from the casino's published terms on the date shown, including the restrictions that make an offer less attractive, such as excluded payment methods or a short expiry. Commercial links are labelled as adverts wherever they appear. Our advertiser disclosure explains how the site is funded and how that funding is kept separate from what we write.
How do I know an offer page is out of date?
Look for wagering above ten times the bonus, or a sports bet unlocking casino spins: either means the page predates 19 January 2026. From that date the Gambling Commission capped bonus wagering at 10x and banned promotions that mix gambling products. Other giveaways are offers with no ‘checked on’ date, offer descriptions that don't match the casino's own page, and references to credit card deposits, which have been banned since April 2020. When in doubt, compare the offer with the casino's own promotions page before you deposit. Our guide to spotting an outdated offer lists more signs.
Is autoplay allowed on slots?
No. Autoplay has been banned on online slots in Great Britain since 31 October 2021, and each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds from start to the point the next can begin. The same rules removed turbo and slam-stop features and stopped games celebrating a ‘win’ that is equal to or smaller than the stake. From 17 January 2025 similar rules were extended to other online casino games, which must take at least five seconds per game cycle. If a site offers autoplay or turbo spins to British players, it isn't following the Commission's technical standards and probably isn't licensed here.
What is the minimum first deposit at a UK online casino?
There's no legal minimum; each casino sets its own, and a welcome offer often needs more than the cashier's lowest figure. Casumo's site states a £10 minimum for all payment methods, but its welcome bonus needs £20. Coral and Ladbrokes publish a £5 minimum only for Google Pay and Pay by Bank and show the general figure in the cashier, while their spin offers need £10 played on slots. PlayOJO's offer needs a £10 first deposit (18+, terms apply). Always read the qualifying amount in the offer terms, not just the cashier minimum. See minimum deposits at UK casinos.
Can I use PayPal for a first deposit bonus?
Sometimes, but not at Coral or Ladbrokes, whose welcome offers both exclude PayPal deposits (checked 5 October 2026). Both casinos accept PayPal for ordinary deposits and withdrawals, so you can still use it later, just without the welcome spins. Casumo's offer carries payment-method restrictions, and PlayOJO's and 10bet's full terms should be read before you rely on PayPal. The terms don't give a reason, so treat the exclusion list as fixed. If the offer matters to you, a debit card is the safer choice for the first deposit, and PayPal can be added afterwards.
Do I have to set a deposit limit before my first deposit?
You must be asked, but you can decline. Since 31 October 2025, licensed casinos must prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, with setting one as the default and opting out requiring a positive confirmation. You type the amount yourself; the casino can't pre-fill a suggestion. Lowering a limit later takes effect straight away. Choosing a weekly figure from your monthly entertainment budget is the simplest approach, and it costs nothing to set one even if you rarely reach it. Gross deposit limits, which cap the total you pay in, had to be available by 30 September 2026.
What happens if I deposit with an excluded payment method?
Your deposit goes through as normal, but the welcome offer won't be triggered, and casinos generally can't add it afterwards. Because most welcome offers attach only to the first deposit, depositing by an excluded method usually means losing that offer for good. At Coral, for example, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe, prepaid cards and certain debit cards don't qualify, and Ladbrokes has a similar list. If it happens, contact support to ask, but expect the answer to follow the terms. To avoid it, check the exclusions immediately before you choose a method on the deposit screen.
Is my first deposit protected if the casino goes bust?
It depends on the protection level the casino has chosen, which it must state in its terms. The Commission recognises three ratings: not protected, where your balance counts as company assets in an insolvency; medium protection, which uses safeguards such as insurance; and high protection, where funds sit in a separate account controlled by an independent trustee. You must acknowledge the rating before your first deposit is used, and since 31 October 2025 ‘not protected’ casinos must remind you every six months. Read the Commission's guide on what happens if a gambling business goes bust (opens in a new tab).
