Who operates BetUK casino

Despite the name, BetUK isn't run by a British company. Its licence holder is LeoVegas Gaming PLC, registered with a head office in Sliema, Malta. That company holds Gambling Commission account 39198 (opens in a new tab), which covers remote casino, bingo and betting, and BetUK is one of several brands it runs for British customers.

LeoVegas began in Sweden in 2011, founded by Gustaf Hagman and Robin Ramm-Ericson, and grew into a multi-brand online group. In May 2022 MGM Resorts International, the American casino resort company, announced an offer for the business, and the approvals it needed were in place by September that year. So the chain of ownership behind BetUK runs from a UK-facing brand to a Maltese licence holder, to a Swedish-founded group, to a US parent.

The row that matters most is the licence holder. Terms and conditions name the company you contract with, and that is the business responsible for verification, withdrawals and responses to complaints. Our glossary entries on the licence holder and the operator explain how the two terms are used.

BetUK casino licence record

We checked the register entry for account 39198 on 20 October 2026. It listed three remote operating licences, each active, and nothing under regulatory actions.

LeoVegas Gaming PLC licences (UKGC account 39198)
LicenceActive sinceWhat it lets the operator offer
Remote casino1 November 2014Slots, table games and live casino online
Remote betting29 April 2016Online sports betting
Remote bingo26 February 2018Online bingo

These dates belong to the licence holder rather than the BetUK name. A brand can be added to an existing account at any point, so the casino licence date tells you how long LeoVegas Gaming PLC has been licensed for casino, not how long BetUK has been trading. Our guide to how casinos get a UK licence explains how accounts, licences and brands relate.

Why a Malta company can run a UK casino

The Gambling Commission doesn't require licensees to be incorporated in Britain. What it requires is a licence for anyone offering remote gambling to consumers in Britain, plus a UK address for service. A Malta head office therefore changes nothing about the rules BetUK must follow with British customers: the £5 slot stake limit, the 10x wagering cap, the deposit limit rules, GAMSTOP participation and the complaints process all apply in full.

It is worth separating this from genuinely offshore sites. A Malta-registered company with a UK licence sits inside the British system; a site that holds only a foreign licence and still targets UK players does not, and you lose those protections. The distinction is covered in our guide to offshore casinos and the page on unlicensed casino risks.

BetUK sister sites on the LeoVegas licence

The domain list for account 39198 (opens in a new tab) shows BetUK alongside a handful of other brands. All of them share a licence holder, so terms, verification and many policies are likely to overlap.

If you hold an account at one of these and are considering another, read the welcome offer eligibility rules first: group-wide limits of one offer per person are common. Our explainer on casino sister sites covers what sharing a licence does and doesn't mean.

What has changed for BetUK casino players recently

Two kinds of change affect BetUK: ownership at group level, and the run of UK rule changes that apply to every licensee. The second set is the one you will notice at the cashier and in promotions.

  • 2022: MGM Resorts International agreed to buy LeoVegas; approvals were in place by 7 September 2022.
  • 9 April and 21 May 2025: online slot stakes capped at £5 per spin for ages 25+ and £2 for ages 18–24.
  • 1 May 2025: marketing consent became per product (casino, betting, bingo) and per channel, with opt-out as the default.
  • 31 October 2025: new customers must be prompted to set a financial limit before their first deposit.
  • 19 January 2026: bonus wagering capped at 10x and promotions mixing products banned.
  • 1 April 2026: remote gaming duty paid by operators rose from 21% to 40%.

The mixed-product rule is particularly relevant to a brand like BetUK that offers both sport and casino. A sports bet can't be the trigger for a casino reward any more, and the reverse is true too. The latest UK casino rules page keeps a dated record of each change.

How your BetUK balance is protected

Every UK licensee must tell you, before your first deposit is used, how well customer funds are protected if the business becomes insolvent. The Commission uses three levels: not protected, medium and high. We haven't confirmed which level LeoVegas Gaming PLC uses, so look for the statement in BetUK's terms or at registration. Since 31 October 2025, an operator rated "not protected" must also remind you every six months, quoting your balance.

The practical lesson: don't treat a casino balance as savings. Withdraw what you don't intend to play with. Our explainer on player funds protection describes each level, and how to withdraw casino winnings covers the steps.

How to verify the BetUK licence in five steps

  1. Find the licence statement at the bottom of the BetUK site or in the app's About section.
  2. Search the Gambling Commission's public register for 39198 or LeoVegas Gaming PLC.
  3. Confirm the remote casino licence shows as Active.
  4. Check the regulatory actions tab for any published sanctions.
  5. Open the domain names tab and confirm the exact web address you are using is listed.

Safer gambling tools and complaints at BetUK

As a UK licensee, LeoVegas Gaming PLC must give you deposit limits, time-outs, self-exclusion and reality checks, take part in GAMSTOP, and interact with you if your play shows signs of harm. We haven't mapped BetUK's menus, so look in the account or responsible gambling section. If you want to block every UK site at once, GAMSTOP (opens in a new tab) is free and covers BetUK along with its sister brands.

Complaints go to the operator first, which has eight weeks to resolve them, then to the ADR provider it names. The Gambling Commission's guide to taking a complaint to ADR (opens in a new tab) explains that stage, and our complaints guide adds practical tips.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns BetUK casino?

BetUK casino is operated by LeoVegas Gaming PLC, a company with its head office in Sliema, Malta, which holds Gambling Commission account 39198. The LeoVegas group has been owned by MGM Resorts International since 2022, following an offer announced that May. Your contract and balance sit with LeoVegas Gaming PLC, which is the business responsible for withdrawals and complaints. For other brands under the same company, see our LeoVegas profile, and for how ownership differs from licensing, read our glossary entry on the operator.

Is BetUK a British company?

No, BetUK's licence holder, LeoVegas Gaming PLC, is based in Malta, and the group's ultimate owner is MGM Resorts International of the United States. The brand name is aimed at British customers, and the company holds a full Gambling Commission licence, which is what makes it legal to serve them. UK rules don't require a licensee to be incorporated in Britain, only to hold a licence and a UK address for service. Our page on whether online gambling is legal in the UK and our offshore casinos guide explain the difference.

Is BetUK casino licensed by the Gambling Commission?

Yes, BetUK casino is covered by the remote casino licence that LeoVegas Gaming PLC has held since 1 November 2014 under account 39198. On 20 October 2026 the register also showed active remote betting and bingo licences, and no regulatory actions. You can confirm this yourself by searching the account number on the Commission's public register and checking that BetUK's domain appears on the list. Our licence check guide walks through it, and what a casino licence number is explains the format.

What are BetUK's sister sites?

BetUK's sister sites are the other brands on LeoVegas Gaming PLC's licence: LeoVegas, BetMGM UK, Pink Casino, 21.co.uk and Slotboss. They share a licence holder, so expect similar verification processes, payment rules and account policies, while the look and the promotions may differ. Welcome offers across a group are often limited to one per person, so read the eligibility clause before opening a second account. You can compare two of them on our BetMGM UK profile and Pink Casino profile.

When did MGM buy LeoVegas?

MGM Resorts International announced an offer for LeoVegas in May 2022, valued at around $607 million, and had all the approvals it needed to begin the acquisition by 7 September 2022. Since then, LeoVegas, and with it BetUK and its sister brands, has been part of the MGM group. For players, the licence holder dealing with British customers stayed LeoVegas Gaming PLC, account 39198. If you are interested in how ownership changes affect a brand, our guide on how offers change and the sister sites explainer are useful starting points.

Is BetUK casino safe for UK players?

BetUK operates under an active UK licence with no regulatory actions listed as of 20 October 2026, so it must apply the full set of British player protections, from age checks to stake limits and complaint handling. That makes it a regulated site, but no regulation removes the house edge, so losses are the likely outcome over time. Set a deposit limit before you play and treat spending as the cost of entertainment. Our page on online casino safety in the UK and our deposit limit guide give more practical detail.

Can BetUK give casino spins for a sports bet?

No. Since 19 January 2026, the Gambling Commission has banned promotions that combine different gambling products, so BetUK, like every UK licensee, can't require a sports bet to unlock casino spins or a casino bonus. Each offer must stay within one product, such as casino or betting. The same rule change capped casino bonus wagering at 10x, meaning a £20 bonus can require no more than £200 of play. Our pages on the mixed-product promotions ban and the 10x wagering cap explain both changes.

Does BetUK casino work with GAMSTOP?

Yes, BetUK must take part in GAMSTOP, because every online operator licensed in Great Britain has been required to participate since 31 March 2020. If you register with GAMSTOP, you will be blocked from BetUK, its sister brands and all other UK-licensed gambling sites for the period you choose, which can be six months, one year or five years. The exclusion can't be cancelled early. Our guides on how to use GAMSTOP and self-exclusion rules explain how it works in practice.

How do I complain about BetUK?

Contact BetUK's customer service with a clear account of the problem, including dates, amounts and any reference numbers. LeoVegas Gaming PLC has eight weeks to resolve the complaint. If you are not satisfied with the final response, you can take the dispute to the alternative dispute resolution provider named in BetUK's terms, which is free for players. The Gambling Commission doesn't adjudicate individual complaints but wants to hear about possible rule breaches. Our complaints guide and the complaints and ADR rules page explain each step.

Do I pay tax on BetUK casino winnings?

No, winnings from BetUK or any other gambling site aren't taxed for UK players. Instead, the operator pays remote gaming duty on its gross gaming profits, a rate that rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. That duty is a cost to the company, not a deduction from your withdrawals. Keep in mind that tax rules can differ if you are resident elsewhere. Our explainers on gambling winnings tax and online casino tax in the UK cover the details.
