Do casino apps drain battery and data? Some more than others. Slots and table games mostly load once and then use little data, though a bright screen and animated graphics still eat battery. Live dealer games stream video, so they use by far the most data. The download itself is a one-off cost, from about 25 MB to over 100 MB for UK casino apps.
Live dealer streams are the biggest data users; RNG slots and tables use much less once loaded.
Screen brightness and session length drive battery use more than which casino you pick.
UK casino app downloads range from about 25 MB (PlayOJO on iOS) to 112 MB (10bet on iOS).

Do casino apps drain battery and data? The short answer
Casino apps use battery and data in the same way as other apps with moving graphics and, sometimes, video. They are not unusually heavy, but how you play matters a great deal. A quiet half-hour on a classic slot over Wi-Fi uses little. An evening of live roulette on 4G with the screen at full brightness uses a lot of both.

These are relative rankings, not lab figures. Your phone’s settings will show the real numbers for your device, as explained below. For the wider picture of playing on a handset, see our mobile casino guide and the answer on whether you can play casino games on your phone.
How much data do casino apps use?
Data use splits into three parts: the app download, the assets each game loads the first time you open it, and the traffic while you play. For an RNG game, once the graphics and sounds are on your phone, each round mainly sends your stake and receives the result from the casino’s server, which is a tiny amount of data. For a live dealer game, the app streams video continuously, so data use climbs for every minute you watch.
Phone counters are more reliable than any rule of thumb. Suppose you reset your mobile data statistics, play live roulette on 4G for 30 minutes, and the counter shows 300 MB for the app. That works out at about 600 MB an hour, so a 5 GB monthly allowance would cover roughly eight hours of that game and nothing else. The 300 MB here is only an illustration; your own figure depends on the stream quality, your connection and the app.

Why casino apps drain battery on your phone
Battery drain in any game comes mainly from four things: the screen, the processor drawing graphics, the radio sending and receiving data, and any background activity. With casino apps, the screen is usually the biggest factor because sessions keep it on continuously. Video slots with heavy animation make the processor work harder, and live streams keep both the processor and the mobile radio busy.
Background activity is worth checking. PlayOJO’s iOS listing states that the app may use your location even when it is not open, which can decrease battery life. Gambling apps can use location to help confirm where you are playing from, but you can review the permission in your phone settings. App privacy labels list location use for several brands: Coral’s iOS label lists coarse location, Ladbrokes’ lists precise location, and the Google Play data safety sections for Casumo and 10bet say they may collect or share location data.
UK rules require full-screen gambling apps that hide your phone’s clock to show the time of day or the elapsed time, wherever practicable. Glancing at it is an easy way to notice both your session length and your battery use. The Commission’s Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards (opens in a new tab) contain the requirement.
How to check a casino app’s battery and data use
On an iPhone, open Settings, then Battery, and scroll to the list of apps to see each one’s share of battery over the last 24 hours or 10 days.
For data on an iPhone, open Settings, then Mobile Service (or Mobile Data), and scroll to see data used by each app since the last reset.
On Android, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery usage. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
For data on Android, open Settings, then Network and internet, then your SIM, then App data usage.
Reset or note the current figures, play as you normally would, then check again to see what a typical session costs.
If an app uses battery while closed, review its location and background refresh permissions.
How to reduce battery and data drain from casino apps
Play on Wi-Fi where you can, especially for live dealer games.
Lower screen brightness or turn on Low Power Mode or Battery Saver.
Choose a lower video quality in live games if the app offers that setting.
Set location access to While Using the App rather than Always, if the app allows it.
Turn off background app refresh for casino apps you rarely use.
Close the app fully after a session instead of leaving it open in the background.
Keep apps updated; updates use data but can fix bugs and improve efficiency.
For most online casino games, the result is decided on the casino’s server the moment you place the stake, so a dead battery or a dropped connection should not cost you a win. When you reconnect, the game normally shows the completed round or lets you finish it. Live games behave differently because the round carries on in the studio; check the game’s help screen for how disconnections are handled. Our answer on losing connection mid-game has more detail, and reading game help screens shows where to find the rules.
Is it safe to leave casino apps running in the background?
It is generally safe, but there is little reason to. An app running in the background can still use battery and, depending on permissions, location. It also keeps gambling one tap away, which some people find makes sessions longer than planned. App privacy labels describe what each app collects, such as financial information, contact details and usage data. Our guides to casino data privacy and whether casinos share your data explain your rights.
Advantages
Apps cache graphics, so repeat sessions on slots use less data
Battery and data counters on your phone show exact usage
Privacy labels show what each app collects
Drawbacks
Live dealer streams use a lot of mobile data
Long sessions keep the screen on and drain battery
Some apps may use location in the background
Battery drain as a session reminder
A phone that has gone from full to half while you play is a sign of a long session. Gambling is entertainment that costs money, and the house edge means losses are likely over time. Tools such as reality checks, which show elapsed time at intervals you choose, and deposit limits help keep sessions in proportion. Our safer gambling hub lists them all, and the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 is free and open 24/7.

Frequently asked questions
Do casino apps use a lot of data?
Most casino apps use only modest data once games are loaded, but live dealer games are an exception. RNG slots and tables download their graphics once, then exchange small messages with the server for each round. Live tables and game shows stream video for as long as you watch, so they can use a large share of a mobile allowance. Check your phone’s per-app data counter after a normal session to see your own figure. Our mobile casino guide covers other practical points.
Why does my casino app drain my battery so fast?
Usually because the screen stays on for the whole session, often at high brightness, while the processor renders animation. Live streams add constant radio use, and some apps also use location in the background. PlayOJO’s iOS listing, for example, notes its app may use location when not open, which can reduce battery life. Lower brightness, switch to Wi-Fi, and review location permissions. Our guide comparing casino apps and mobile sites may help you decide which uses less on your phone.
Do live casino games use more data than slots?
Yes, much more. A live dealer game streams video from a studio continuously, while an RNG slot mainly sends your stake and receives a result once its graphics are cached. The exact amount depends on stream quality and your connection, so measure it on your own phone by checking the app’s data use before and after a session. If you play live games often, Wi-Fi is the simplest way to protect your allowance. Our page on whether live dealers are real explains how the streams work.
Is it better to use a casino app or a mobile website for battery life?
Neither is always better. An app avoids reloading assets each visit and can feel smoother, but takes storage and may run background tasks. A mobile site needs no download but reloads more through the browser. The games themselves are often the same in both, so battery use during play is similar. Try both and compare using your phone’s battery settings. Our app vs mobile site comparison sets out the other differences, such as login options and notifications.
How big are casino apps to download in the UK?
On the UK App Store in October 2026, our partner casinos’ apps ranged from 25.4 MB for PlayOJO to 112.3 MB for 10bet, with Casumo at 52.5 MB and Coral and Ladbrokes at just over 101 MB each. Coral and Ladbrokes need iOS 18 or later, while PlayOJO and Casumo need iOS 15. Games download extra assets when you first open them. Our pages on the Coral app and PlayOJO app give more detail.
Why does a casino app want my location?
Location data can help a casino confirm where you are playing from, and the privacy labels say some apps also use it for personalisation. App privacy labels show the detail: Coral’s iOS label lists coarse location and Ladbrokes’ lists precise location, while Casumo and 10bet say on Google Play that they may share or collect location. You can usually limit access to while the app is in use. Our guide to casino data privacy explains your options.
Will I lose my winnings if my phone dies mid-spin?
Normally no. For RNG games the outcome is settled on the casino’s server when the stake is placed, so the result is recorded even if your phone switches off. When you log back in, the game should show the finished round or let you complete it. Live games carry on in the studio and follow their own disconnection rules, set out in the help screen. See our answer on losing connection mid-game for more.
Do UK rules affect how much data a casino app uses?
Indirectly. UK rules require each slot spin to take at least 2.5 seconds, with no autoplay, turbo or slam stop, and other online casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle. That limits how many rounds you can play per minute, and so the number of server messages. Live streams are unaffected, since video runs continuously. Full-screen gambling apps must also show the time where they hide your clock. Our latest slot rules page lists the dates.
Can I play casino apps offline to save data?
Not for real money. Every real-money round needs a connection, because results and balances are handled on the casino’s servers. Free-to-play demo versions at licensed casinos still require you to be logged in and age-verified, a rule in place since May 2019. Offline versions in app stores are usually social games, not licensed casino products. Our page on free-to-play demo rules explains the verification requirement.
