How casino promotions work

How casino promotions work, in one line: you meet a condition, usually a deposit or a set amount of play, and the casino gives you spins, bonus funds or cash back under published terms. Since 19 January 2026, UK wagering is capped at 10x and one offer cannot mix casino with betting or bingo, which makes deals simpler to judge.

Key takeaways

  • Every promotion is a trade: a qualifying action from you, a reward with conditions from the casino.
  • Since 19 January 2026, wagering is capped at 10x and offers cannot mix gambling products.
  • Spins value is simple maths: 100 spins at 10p is £10 of play, not £10 of cash.
  • The house edge still applies, so promotions reduce the cost of play rather than turning it into income.

How casino promotions work in the UK: the basic trade

Strip away the branding and every casino promotion has the same three parts. There is a qualifying action, such as signing up, depositing or staking a set amount. There is a reward, such as spins, bonus money, cash back or points. And there are conditions that decide what you can do with the reward and when it expires.

Casinos fund promotions from the house edge built into their games. A promotion is a marketing cost that the casino expects to recover over time from the players it attracts. That does not make offers worthless, but it does mean the long-run maths still favours the casino. A well-chosen promotion lowers the cost of entertainment you were planning anyway; it is not a way to earn.

The offers hub breaks promotions down by type, and the explainer on how casino bonuses work answers the most common questions briefly.

Types of casino promotion and how each one works

Each type has its own deep dive: how free spins work, first deposit bonuses, cashback bonuses and casino loyalty programmes.

The life of a casino promotion, from opt-in to withdrawal

Whatever the type, a promotion usually moves through the same stages. Knowing them helps you spot where things go wrong.

  1. Check eligibility: age 18+, new or existing customer, location (some offers exclude Northern Ireland), and any one-per-household rule.
  2. Opt in if required, by ticking a box at sign-up, choosing the bonus in the cashier or using the designated offer link.
  3. Make the qualifying deposit with an eligible payment method; many offers exclude e-wallets and prepaid cards.
  4. Complete any qualifying play, such as staking £10 on slots.
  5. Receive and accept the reward within the stated window, for example 48 hours.
  6. Use the reward within its expiry period on the eligible games.
  7. Complete wagering if any applies, staying within the maximum bet.
  8. Withdraw cash balances once conditions are met.

Most disputes trace back to steps 3, 6 or 7: an excluded payment method, an expired reward or a bet above the limit. Our casino welcome offer checklist turns this into a quick pre-claim check.

Promotion maths: worked examples with real UK offers

Here is how the numbers work on our partners’ current offers, checked on 5 October 2026. Averages use the published RTP where one game is named; actual results vary widely, and you can lose the whole deposit.

What each partner offer is worth in stake terms
OfferQualifying actionReward in stake termsWagering
Coral: bet £10, get 100 free spinsDeposit and bet £10+ on slots100 × 10p = £10 of spinsNone on spin winnings
Ladbrokes: up to 500 free spinsDeposit and spend £10+ on slots50 × 10p = £5 a day for up to 10 days, £50 in totalNone
PlayOJO: 80 free spinsFirst deposit of £10+80 × 10p = £8 of spins on Big Bass BonanzaNone; winnings paid in cash
Casumo: 50% up to £100First deposit of £20+, opt in£100 deposit gives £50 bonus; £200 gives £10010x the bonus within 7 days
10bet: 100% up to £25First deposit within 7 days of sign-up£25 deposit gives £25 bonus10x the bonus on slots within 3 days; max bonus winnings £1,000

Free spins: average return

PlayOJO’s 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza total £8 in stakes. At the game’s published 96.71% RTP, the long-run average return is about £7.74, paid as cash because there is no wagering. Many individual batches return less, some return nothing, and a few return more.

Deposit match: wagering cost

A £100 deposit at Casumo adds a £50 bonus. Wagering it 10x means placing £500 of bets within 7 days, at no more than £5 each. On a slot returning 96%, the average cost of £500 of play is about £20, though results swing widely around that figure. Our wagering calculator runs the numbers for any bonus.

How casino promotions work under the 2026 UK rules

Promotions are regulated through the Gambling Commission’s licence conditions, the advertising codes and consumer law. The biggest recent change came on 19 January 2026, announced in the Commission’s article on making gambling promotions safer and simpler (opens in a new tab).

Rule changes affecting casino promotions, dated
DateRuleWhat it means for offers
12 February 2023Stop marketing and new bonuses on strong signs of harmSome customers will not be offered promotions
1 May 2025Marketing consent per product and channel, opt-out by defaultYou only get casino offers by email, SMS or phone if you opted in
31 October 2025Financial limit prompt before first depositYou set a limit during sign-up, even when claiming a welcome offer
19 January 2026Wagering capped at 10xNo more 35x or 50x bonuses at UK-licensed sites
19 January 2026Mixed-product promotions bannedNo “bet on football to get casino spins” offers
19 January 2026Time-based incentives removedRewards cannot depend on playing for a set length of time or frequency

The Commission gives its own example: a £10 bonus with 50x wagering would once have meant £500 of play before any withdrawal; under the cap the most is £100. Our pages on the 10x wagering cap and the mixed-product promotions ban go deeper, and before and after the 10x cap compares old and new offers.

The CAP Code requires significant conditions to be stated in the advert itself, so the key terms should appear close to the headline, as the CAP guidance on promotional terms and significant conditions (opens in a new tab) explains. Our guide on how to read bonus terms covers every clause in detail.

How promotions work for existing customers

After the welcome offer, casinos use smaller, recurring promotions: reload bonuses, daily spins, prize draws, tournaments and loyalty rewards. The same 10x cap and mixed-product ban apply. What has changed is that rewards can no longer be tied to playing for a set length of time or at a set frequency, so “log in every day for seven days to get a bigger reward” style mechanics are gone.

Existing-customer offers are also more personalised, which is why your account may show different deals from a friend’s. If a casino has seen signs that you may be experiencing harm, it must stop offering you new bonuses. Our guide to offers for existing customers and the casino promotions calendar show what to expect through the year.

From 1 May 2025, UK casinos have had to ask you at sign-up which products you want marketing for (casino, betting, bingo) and through which channels (email, SMS, phone), with everything off unless you opt in. Existing customers were asked to confirm their preferences at their next login after that date. You can change your choices at any time in account settings.

The Commission’s guidance on stopping gambling marketing texts and emails (opens in a new tab) explains your options, and our guide to opting out of casino marketing walks through the settings.

How to judge whether a casino promotion is worth claiming

  1. Would you play anyway? A promotion only helps if it reduces the cost of play you had already budgeted for.
  2. Convert spins into pounds: number × spin value.
  3. Check wagering: zero is simplest; at 10x, multiply the bonus by 10 to see the play required.
  4. Check the max bet, eligible games and expiry against how you actually play.
  5. Look for a winnings cap.
  6. Confirm your payment method qualifies before depositing.
  7. Set a deposit limit and a time limit before you start.

Advantages

  • No-wagering spins pay winnings as cash, so the value is easy to see.
  • The 10x cap makes deposit bonuses far more realistic to complete than before 2026.
  • Clear terms must be readily accessible.

Drawbacks

  • Spins are tied to specific games and values you cannot change.
  • Deposit bonuses lock funds behind wagering and bet limits.
  • Short expiry windows can push you to play more than you intended.

The offer runs from 1 October 2026 to 1 February 2027.
  • PlayOJO (deposit spins, no wagering): new UK customers, excluding Northern Ireland, who make a first deposit of £10 or more get 80 free spins on Big Bass Bonanza at 10p each. Winnings are paid in cash. Only available through the designated offer link and not combinable with other offers.

Frequently asked questions

How do casino promotions work?

You complete a qualifying action, such as a deposit or a set amount of play, and the casino gives you a reward under published terms. Rewards include free spins at a fixed value, bonus funds matched to your deposit, cashback or loyalty points. The terms set eligible games, expiry and any wagering, which in the UK is capped at 10x since 19 January 2026. Read the significant conditions before you deposit. Our guide on how to claim a casino bonus gives the practical steps.

Why do casinos give away promotions?

To attract and keep customers. Promotions are a marketing cost that casinos expect to recover through the house edge on the games people play. That is why offers come with conditions such as eligible games, maximum bets and expiry dates. It also means promotions reduce the cost of play rather than creating a profit for players over time. Our explainers on how online casinos make money and how casinos make money on free spins explain the economics.

What is the maximum wagering requirement in the UK?

Ten times the bonus. From 19 January 2026, UK-licensed casinos have not been able to require you to play through bonus funds more than 10 times before winnings can be withdrawn. A £50 bonus therefore needs no more than £500 of bets. Before the cap, 35x or even 50x was common. Offers with no wagering at all, such as Coral’s and PlayOJO’s free spins, remain allowed. The 10x wagering cap page explains the rule and its background.

Can I get a casino bonus without depositing?

Not from our partners. None of Coral, Ladbrokes, PlayOJO, Casumo or 10bet currently offers a no-deposit bonus, and such offers have become rare at UK-licensed sites. Where they exist, they usually involve small amounts and strict terms, and age and identity checks still apply before you can play. Be cautious of sites promising large no-deposit rewards. Our answer to why there are no no deposit bonuses explains the reasons.

Do I need a promo code for casino promotions?

Usually not. None of our five partners needs a promo code for its welcome offer; you claim by opting in, choosing the bonus at sign-up or using the designated offer link, as PlayOJO requires. Some existing-customer promotions use codes sent by email or shown in the promotions page. Be wary of websites listing codes that do not appear on the casino’s own terms. How codes work today is covered in casino bonus codes.

Why did I not get my casino bonus?

The most common reasons are using an excluded payment method, depositing less than the minimum, not opting in, missing the acceptance window, or having claimed a welcome offer with a sister brand. Coral, for example, excludes PayPal, Skrill and prepaid cards from its spins offer. Contact support with the deposit time and method. If the casino has seen signs of possible harm, it must stop new bonus take-up. Our answer on why free spins did not appear covers the checks.

What does the mixed-product promotions ban mean?

From 19 January 2026, a single promotion has been barred from involving more than one type of gambling product. A casino cannot, for instance, ask you to bet on sport to receive casino spins, or give bingo tickets for playing slots. Each offer must stay within one product. The aim is to stop promotions nudging people towards gambling products they had not chosen. Detail and examples are on the mixed-product promotions ban page.

Can a casino change promotion terms after I claim?

Casinos can update terms for future customers, but changing the significant conditions of a promotion you have already accepted, to your disadvantage, is likely to be unfair under consumer law. The Competition and Markets Authority’s earlier enforcement work led several operators to commit to clearer, fairer bonus terms. Save a copy of the terms when you claim. Our answer to can casinos change bonus terms explains your position.

Are free spins really free?

Free spins are free to use once you have met the qualifying condition, which is usually a deposit or a set amount of play. Coral’s 100 spins, for instance, follow a £10 bet on slots, and PlayOJO’s 80 spins follow a first deposit of at least £10. The spins have a fixed value, often 10p each, and are limited to selected games. Any winnings may be paid in cash or as bonus funds. The conditions to check are listed in what is the catch with free spins.

Is it a good idea to claim every casino promotion?

No. A promotion is only useful if it fits gambling you had already budgeted for, on games you like, within a time you are comfortable with. Short expiry dates and wagering can push you to play more than planned. Set deposit and time limits first, and skip offers that do not suit you. If promotions make it harder to stick to limits, consider opting out of marketing. Our guide to setting a gambling budget offers practical help.
