Dozen bet meaning in roulette

Dozen bet meaning: a dozen bet in roulette backs one of three groups of 12 numbers, 1 to 12, 13 to 24 or 25 to 36, and pays 2 to 1 if the ball lands in your group. Zero isn't in any dozen, so on a single-zero wheel the bet wins 12 times in 37, about 32.4% of spins.

Key takeaways

  • The three dozens are 1–12, 13–24 and 25–36; each pays 2 to 1.
  • Zero (and 00 on American wheels) loses every dozen bet.
  • House edge: 2.70% on a single-zero wheel, 5.26% on a double-zero wheel.
  • Losing runs are common: five misses in a row happens about 14% of the time on a European wheel.

Dozen bet meaning: one third of the numbers

The betting layout splits the numbers 1 to 36 into three blocks of 12. Below the number grid you'll see three boxes, usually labelled 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12. A chip in one of those boxes is a dozen bet. On French tables the same boxes may read P12, M12 and D12, short for première, moyenne and dernière douzaine: first, middle and last dozen.

Dozens are outside bets, meaning they sit outside the main grid and cover a large group of numbers with a single chip. They sit between the high-paying inside bets, such as straight-ups, and the even-money bets such as red or black. The zero pocket is not part of any dozen.

Dozen bet odds and house edge by wheel type

Dozen bet odds on the main roulette variants
VariantPocketsChance of a winPayoutHouse edge
European (single zero)3732.43%2 to 12.70%
French (single zero)3732.43%2 to 12.70% (la partage doesn't apply)
American (double zero)3831.58%2 to 15.26%

A fair 2 to 1 payout would need exactly a one-in-three chance. The zero pocket makes the chance slightly worse than that, and the gap is the casino's margin. Note that the la partage rule on French roulette only applies to even-money bets, so dozens get no extra protection there. The Wizard of Odds roulette guide (opens in a new tab) works through the same numbers for every bet.

Dozen bet examples in pounds

Put £10 on the second dozen (13–24). If 19 lands, you are paid £20 and keep your £10 chip, so £30 comes back. If 7, 31 or 0 lands, the £10 is gone. Over the long run on a single-zero wheel, the average cost is 2.70% of £10, about 27p a spin.

The double-dozen bet

Some players split a stake over two dozens, £5 on each, covering 24 numbers. A hit returns £15 from the winning dozen, leaving you £5 up on the £10 staked. A miss on the other 13 numbers costs £10. You win nearly two spins in three, but each win is half the size of each loss, and the edge stays at 2.70%.

How often does a dozen bet lose in a row?

With a 67.6% chance of missing on each spin, losing streaks are a normal part of dozen betting, not a sign that a win is "due".

  • Three misses in a row: about 30.8% of the time.
  • Five misses in a row: about 14.1%.
  • Eight misses in a row: about 4.3%.
  • Ten misses in a row: about 2.0%.

This is why staking systems that triple the stake after each dozen loss are dangerous. Starting at £5, a tripling plan reaches £1,215 on the sixth bet, quickly hitting table limits or your budget. Our guides to the Martingale system and betting systems explain why no progression changes the edge.

Dozen bets at UK online casinos: the rules

Every licensed roulette game in Great Britain offers dozen bets. Since 17 January 2025 the Gambling Commission's design rules require at least 5 seconds per game cycle on RNG roulette, ban autoplay, and require your net position and play time to be shown. See table game speed rules and the net position display rule for detail, and use a deposit limit to cap your spending.

If betting stops feeling like entertainment, the NHS gambling support page (opens in a new tab) explains the free treatment available, and the National Gambling Helpline is open 24/7 on 0808 8020 133.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dozen bet in roulette?

A dozen bet is a wager that the ball will land in one of three groups of 12 numbers: 1–12, 13–24 or 25–36. It pays 2 to 1, so a £10 winning bet returns £30 including your stake. Zero is not part of any dozen and loses the bet. Dozens are one of the standard outside bets listed in our roulette bets guide, and the glossary explains the related terms.

What are the odds of winning a dozen bet?

On a single-zero European wheel, a dozen bet wins 12 times in 37, a 32.43% chance per spin. On a double-zero American wheel, it wins 12 times in 38, or 31.58%. The payout is the same 2 to 1 on both, so the American game costs you more: a 5.26% house edge against 2.70%. Our roulette odds table compares all standard bets on both wheels.

Is betting on two dozens a good strategy?

Betting on two dozens raises your chance of a winning spin to about 64.9%, but each win is small and each loss is double that size. With £5 on each of two dozens, you net £5 on a hit and lose £10 on a miss. The house edge is still 2.70% of everything you stake, so it is a different shape of risk, not an advantage. The best roulette bet page explains why no combination beats the edge.

Does zero count in a dozen bet?

No. Zero is not included in any of the three dozens, so a dozen bet loses when the ball lands on 0, and on American tables on 00 as well. That missing pocket is exactly where the casino's edge comes from: without zero, a 2 to 1 payout on a one-in-three chance would be a fair bet. The zero entry explains the pocket's role in more detail, and house edge explained covers the maths.

What is the difference between a dozen bet and a column bet?

Both cover 12 numbers and pay 2 to 1, so the odds and house edge are identical. The difference is the shape on the table: a dozen takes 12 consecutive numbers, such as 13–24, while a column takes every third number down the length of the layout, such as 1, 4, 7 and so on up to 34. See column bet for the full list of column numbers and how their colours differ.

Can I use a bonus on dozen bets?

Sometimes, but check the terms first. Free spins are tied to specific slots and can't be used on roulette, and many casino bonuses count roulette at a reduced rate or exclude it from wagering altogether. Since 19 January 2026 bonus wagering in Great Britain is capped at 10x, but game restrictions still apply. Our roulette bonus guide and game weighting entry explain what to look for.
